As my friend's regular spot, we headed to Tanuki-san for our second stop. It's a bit far from Asakusa Station, but easily accessible from Taharamachi Station. From Kaminarimon, just head straight down Kaminarimon Street to Kaminarimon 1-chome, where you'll see a police box. From there, walk a little further down the alley and you'll spot the restaurant. Outside, there's a human-sized Shigaraki ware tanuki statue welcoming guests. Inside, there's a traditional robatayaki setup with a counter surrounding the hearth and tatami seating. The atmosphere is like an old countryside house, and you'll see a few foreign customers. It feels more like a place where foreigners staying in Japan are brought by their friends rather than a touristy spot. We were seated in a tatami room and left the ordering to my friend, who chose the following dishes:
- Chilled tomato
- Nagaimo with wasabi
- Vinegared sea cucumber
- Grilled clams
- Grilled hokke fish
- Squid meatball
- Grilled sardines
- Grilled taro
Since we were a bit full from our first stop, we ordered a variety of dishes to share. The wasabi-flavored nagaimo was simple yet perfectly seasoned. The vinegared sea cucumber had a great texture thanks to its freshness. The grilled dishes were the highlight, with the hokke fish being juicy inside and crispy outside, and no fishy smell. The squid meatball was tender and not chewy as sometimes happens with grilled squid. Everything was delicious, and the sake flowed freely, making our New Year's gathering a great success.

I visited this restaurant with my family on a regular night. It is located on the left side of Kikusui Street, just off the intersection where the Tahara-cho police box is on International Street. There is a ceramic tanuki figurine at the storefront. We found this place while walking back from buying kitchen knives at Kappabashi Kitchen Town. The atmosphere seemed nice, so we decided to give it a try. Upon entering (be careful of the step right after the sliding door), we were greeted warmly. We were seated at the L-shaped counter, which was a bit uncomfortable due to the low seating. The menu was in English as well, but it was quite vague and didn't provide much detail about the dishes. The prices seemed a bit high overall. We ordered a draft beer for 650 yen and oolong tea for 300 yen, which seemed reasonable. The appetizer charge was 300 yen for bean sprout namul. All the dishes were grilled on the hearth, with items like halfbeak fish for 750 yen (2 pieces), onion for 300 yen (2 slices), sweet potato for 500 yen (2 halves), and grilled chicken for 500 yen (3 skewers). The food was well-cooked, and the sweet miso sauce was delicious. However, the prices were a bit on the higher side. We also had a highball for 500 yen, which was strong. The menu mainly consisted of grilled dishes, and while there were sashimi options, they seemed quite expensive (3,500 yen for a small size). Overall, it felt like the target customers of this restaurant were not locals but more geared towards tourists. We left the restaurant thinking about this. It is a smoking-friendly establishment. Thank you for the meal.

I went to the Nikujiru Gyoza no Dandadan Kappabashi store and had just one drink as a way to pass the time before the restaurant officially opened. I felt bad for not ordering more, as this place is known for its authentic robatayaki dishes and drinks. I had a beer to start, and then enjoyed dishes like grilled potatoes, shiitake mushrooms, clams, grilled onions, grilled mackerel, and dried sardines. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was great. I recommend sitting at the counter with 2-3 people to fully enjoy the experience.

Visited around 6 pm on March 26, 2023 (Sunday) and it was raining. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom, despite the rain. I stopped by while in the neighborhood. I think I came here for drinks over 35 years ago. The atmosphere hasn't changed and it's great. The eggplant and minced chicken stew they serve is hard to find in other places nowadays. In fact, I haven't seen it anywhere else except for this restaurant. The grilled rice ball was delicious.

At a traditional Japanese charcoal grill restaurant called Robatayaki, the chef grills seasonal vegetables and seafood over charcoal and serves them to customers using long-handled wooden paddles. The atmosphere is cozy and authentic, with a focus on the quality of the ingredients. I started with a cold beer and bean sprout appetizer, followed by a delicious grilled potato with butter. The grilled fish was also a highlight, especially the large and flavorful grilled mackerel. Other dishes like sea cucumber vinegar, whelk, and stingray fin were also enjoyable. Overall, a satisfying dining experience with a must-try counter seating for the full Robatayaki experience.

My stomach was feeling settled, but the atmosphere of the restaurant's exterior and the view of the counter through the glass were so inviting that I was quickly drawn in. I was seated at the counter in front of the grill. The staff used a large paddle-like "Hori-bera" to serve drinks and dishes right in front of me, which was quite an exciting performance. The dishes like grilled chicken, peppers, grilled skewers, grilled leeks, and highballs were all delicious and paired perfectly with the drinks. The prices were a bit high, but the portions were generous and satisfying. It's best for two people, as ordering alone may result in too much food. Even though I had a small appetite when I arrived, I left feeling completely satisfied. I will definitely be coming back to this restaurant.

I visited a robatayaki restaurant in Asakusa, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. It had been 20 years since my last visit, but everything felt familiar - from the menu to the chef and the staff. I felt like I had traveled back in time and was filled with a sense of comfort. I ordered hot sake to warm up from the cold, along with hormone stew and horse mackerel sashimi. I also added octopus vinegar, which I had a feeling I had tried before. The food was consistently delicious and I felt at ease. I added more hot sake and ordered grilled sardines and eggplant. The grilled eggplant was especially tasty. This place is a wonderful robatayaki restaurant that embodies the charm of Asakusa.

Today I visited Asakusa. It was my first time visiting "Tanuki-san," a place I had been wanting to go to but never had the chance to. It was late, but the place was almost full. I had tried to visit several times before, but it was always full and I couldn't get in... I was finally able to get in and I was so happy. I started with a sweet potato shochu on the rocks. The appetizer was bean sprout namul. For dishes, I had salted fish roe, ginkgo nuts, jellyfish, grilled yam, grilled shishito peppers, and more. The salted fish roe was homemade and the seasoning was perfect. It was very delicious. It is in my top three salted fish roe dishes. Thank you for the meal. I will visit again.

I escaped from Ueno and headed to Asakusa. I cashed in last week's winning ticket at WINS and bought a pre-sale ticket for the G1 Takarazuka Kinen the next day. The money I won will be bet on horses again. I'm a gambling addict (´_ゝ`)フッ But, man, this heat is unbearableヽ( ̄д ̄;)ノ Seeking refuge. Hoppy Street is bustling with every shop packed. I found a relatively empty place and went in♪ Started with a beer♪ The dish I ordered was "Beef Tendon Stew ¥580" and it was unexpectedly delicious (゚д゚)ウマー In Tokyo's downtown bars, you can't go wrong with any stew. I'll just have one drink here and then move on to the next place.

From the perspective of dealing with the coronavirus, it's good, and it's also fun and the food is very delicious. There are many options like Hoppy, Monjayaki, and Okonomiyaki, which overseas visitors seem to enjoy. I think tourists would have a good time there. The cost performance is also excellent.

I visited the restaurant on my way back from Kappabashi Kitchen Town during the consecutive holidays. There are two points I wanted to know beforehand, so I will mention them:
- Cash only
- The toilet is a Japanese-style toilet, and it has been in business for 50 years.
Although it was a bit disappointing to see these points, I really liked the restaurant. They served food cooked on a hearth with a large ladle, which was both fun and safe from a COVID perspective. The food was also very delicious. I think even tourists would enjoy visiting this place. I went around 5 pm, and many ingredients were already sold out, so it seems better to visit earlier. We had three bottled beers and shochu for about 6000 yen for two people. Some people say it's priced for tourists, but I didn't think so.

Overall, I thought the pricing was on the higher side, perhaps due to being a tourist spot. The unique style of serving dishes from the grill using a long spatula called a "horikaehera" was interesting. I wonder if this is what they call "robata-yaki." The homemade salted squid innards were perfect as a drinking snack. Smoking was allowed inside, which made it difficult for me to stay for a long time. I wanted to visit once because of the nostalgic atmosphere, but I don't plan on returning. Thank you for the meal.

Because it's in my neighborhood, I've known about this place since I was a kid. It was always popular, with lines forming outside, even though it's just a casual dining place. The ashtrays and the tanuki statue look a bit worn out, but the food is still great. The symbol of the restaurant, the giant rice paddle used for grilling, is really impressive.

On a Sunday evening around 7 PM, in Nishi-Asakusa. Near the intersection of Kaminarimon Street and Kokusai Street. About a 2-3 minute walk from Taharamachi Station or TX Asakusa Station. A large yellow sign with big characters, a restaurant serving robatayaki. I think the main branch is in Shinbashi. Located on the 1st floor of a building with a wide entrance and a Showa-era facade, making it easy to see inside from the outside and creating a welcoming atmosphere. It used to be bustling with inbound tourists, with menus in two languages. The restaurant was about 60% full, surprisingly with many young ladies in pairs. I ordered the following items from the floor manager, a well-built older gentleman:
- Bottled beer (medium size, dry) 600 yen
- Barley shochu with hot water set 1,200 yen
- Pickled plum (price unknown)
- Shishito peppers 300 yen
- Taro 500 yen
- Grilled shiitake mushroom 600 yen
- Grilled mackerel 750 yen
The complimentary appetizer was bean sprouts. The drinks and dishes were served in large wooden spoons, making the beer feel surprisingly light. However, the gentleman in charge of the grill always had a calm smile. It somehow made him look cool. The taro and shishito peppers were served with miso. The taro was big and delicious, and the miso was also tasty. The grilled mackerel was large and had a firm texture, providing a satisfying eating experience. Although you could order a single drink, I followed the gentleman's recommendation and ordered a large sake bottle, poured into a cute but stern-faced tanuki decanter. It was probably about 2 cups. They also provided a pot of hot water, allowing me to drink at my own pace. The pickled plum was ordered by my companion to add to the shochu, and it had a nice salty flavor, reminiscent of what my grandmother used to make. This restaurant seems to offer great value by creatively using miso and pickled plums. The reliable deliciousness and retro atmosphere are appealing. Oh, and smoking is allowed, so it might not be suitable for those who are sensitive to smoke. I don't mind cigarette smoke and I've fallen for the gentleman, so I will definitely visit again. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

I recommend the grilled teriyaki at Tanuki-san, a place I haven't been to in a while. Along with the usual special cold tofu and ice-cold beer, the teriyaki was thick and juicy. I usually don't eat the skin, but it was crispy and deliciously cooked. The grilled rice balls with bonito flakes were also delicious and highly recommended.

After leaving the sushi restaurant where my junior from the traditional robatayaki grill is located, I walked back from Asakusa Kaminarimon-dori to Kikusui-dori, where Bistro Catari and the traditional robatayaki grill are located. This is a place where I have been taken care of by my seniors since I was a kid, and even though it's early for the end of the year, I stopped by to say hello. I had the special cold tofu, draft beer, and took home two grilled rice balls as souvenirs. The grilled rice balls are delicious. I've been coming here for about 30 years... 2020/12/12

I may have this kind of face, but I can't handle alcohol very well. I can tolerate sweet cocktails, rosé, or white wine a little bit. If I drink half a glass, my heart moves to my head. That's why I don't really go to izakayas. I visited Tanuki, a long-established izakaya in Asakusa's downtown area. There is a big tanuki at the entrance, and tanuki figures and ashtrays are placed all around the restaurant. Due to the pandemic, the restaurant was empty, and there were not many grilled items on the ice. Grilled whole sardines, chicken meatballs, scallops, grilled scallops, hanpen (fish cake), grilled mackerel, grilled onigiri, chicken meatballs and grilled scallops all have the same sauce. The staff members were older, and you could see their coordinated movements. The grilled items were brought out on a large spatula-like tool, and the middle-aged man in charge of grilling even managed to balance four beer mugs on it as he served them to the newly arrived customers. It was amazing! He was steady and unwavering, a result of years of training. My friend and I thought, "It would be nice to drink alcohol at times like this," "Sake would go well with this." In the past, the place would have been crowded during horse racing season, but not anymore. Thank you for the meal!

I happened to stop by this charcoal grill restaurant. The food was delicious, with fresh fish and tasty drinks. However, the low rating might be due to the atmosphere of the restaurant and the prices. The staff seemed a bit lacking in energy, especially since I visited on a weekday. Perhaps it would have been better as a first stop of the night.

I love the special cold tofu here. During the state of emergency, they may temporarily close, so it's good to check on the seniors too. I come here on Kikusui Street to cool down with the special cold tofu. The soy sauce that pools in the cold tofu is delicious. And I also enjoy a glass of draft beer. 2020/06/14

I used to think that it was a difficult task to find a bar that children would enjoy, but everyone is happy with robatayaki! It might be the best family restaurant. You can get plenty of protein, vegetables, and carbohydrates. Grilled rice balls, grilled fish, grilled vegetables, cold tofu, salted fish guts, everything is available, truly a family restaurant!

As a New Year's greeting, I visited a restaurant called "Tanuki" along Kikusui Street in Asakusa for some grilled food. While I usually go to the one in Kanazawa, this one has been around for over 50 years. I enjoyed their special cold tofu topped with Nanami spice from Yamatoya, along with a refreshing glass of beer. The familiar atmosphere of the place made it even better, but it got crowded so I had to leave. (01/03/2020)
