Today I was in the mood for some good old-fashioned ramen, especially since I had to renew my driver's license. Before heading to my regular hair salon in Hachioji, where I had some time to spare, I decided to try out a new restaurant that I had not visited before - Maruniya, a Yokohama-style ramen shop located in Hachioji. Hachioji is well-known for its ramen, so finding a good family-style ramen shop like this one was quite a treat. It is said that the shop is run by someone from the Koya family in Ota, Tokyo. The Cabbage Ramen here is really good!
It took me about 10 minutes from JR Hachioji Station to reach the shop, located beyond the Don Quijote in Hachioji. As you move away from the station area, you'll find many small, individually-owned shops, giving the area a different vibe. Maruniya stands out with its prominent sign, making it easy to spot. The menu is ticket-based, so I first purchased my meal ticket and ordered the classic combo of ramen and rice. I opted for the Ramen (regular size) for ¥780, added Cabbage topping for ¥150, and a half portion of rice for an additional ¥50, bringing the total to ¥980. The cost-performance ratio was really great, as I received change from a ¥1000 bill.
The interior of the shop is not very spacious, with only a counter for seating. It was almost full during lunchtime, but I was lucky to be seated promptly. I handed in my ticket and the staff asked if I had any preferences, to which I replied, "All normal, please." Soon enough, my ramen arrived. The portion was quite generous for a regular size, and the half portion of rice also had a good amount. The soup had a delicious pork bone soy sauce flavor, which was light and easy to drink. The noodles were the perfect match for the soup, and the ample cabbage topping added a nice crunch to the dish.
The combination of the soup, noodles, and cabbage was really good. The chashu pork and other toppings also added to the overall flavor. The seaweed and spinach toppings, especially when dipped in the soup, were delicious. Towards the end of my meal, I added some garlic (grated) and vinegar from the condiments on the table, which enhanced the flavors even more. The portion size was just right, and I left feeling satisfied.
Maruniya is a rare gem in the Hachioji area, offering delicious family-style ramen. I hope they continue to thrive and serve up tasty noodles for years to come. Thank you for the meal today!
