Sometimes noodles. I visited a restaurant that I had not visited before. The interior extends long and narrow, with a counter and several tables.
- Pork Tan Tan Men (1,150 yen tax included)
Rice, service included. This is a tan tan men with finely chopped pork on top. In Japanese, pork (paako) refers to spare ribs such as pork, but in Japan, it often refers to fried pork. The pork is cut very finely. There is one slice of chashu. The noodles are very thin like Hakata tonkotsu ramen, and you can choose the hardness of the noodles - normal, firm, or very firm. You can also choose the level of spiciness. When you think of tan tan men, you may imagine a lot of spicy minced meat, but the tan tan men at this restaurant is quite different. The taste is very gentle, and the aftertaste is good.
The main branch is in Ningyocho, and it seems to be part of the Ginza restaurant hopping tradition. Indeed, it has a similar image to hopping in Ginza. By the way, tan tan men originated in Sichuan Province 270 years ago, created by Chen Paopao, who carried and sold noodles, which is why it is called tan tan men.

Sesame sauce and Chinese spices-infused soy sauce-based tantan soup. This post serves as a memo with my personal rating and a brief comment to remember the deliciousness of the restaurant I visited. Please note that the rating is based on my personal feelings and may vary depending on my condition and emotions.

I went to a specialty store for tantanmen and sour and spicy noodles, and I chose the tantanmen. The noodles were thin like Hakata ramen, easy to eat, and you could choose the firmness. They use delicious domestic vegetables. The soup was not thick and was on the lighter side. It was a delicious and refreshing tantanmen. I can't wait to go back soon!

I visited the restaurant right at 12 o'clock on a weekday. There were no customers at first, but they started coming in one after another soon after. I ordered the Paiko Tantanmen (1,150 yen) with normal spiciness and rice. I wish I had asked for it to be spicier because it was quite mild. The chicken karaage was thin, so if it had been thicker, it would have been even more delicious. Thank you for the meal!

At lunchtime, do young people eat something? There's a delicious soupless tantanmen nearby. I ordered the recommended medium spicy soupless tantanmen right away. Even though I said I didn't want extra rice, it still came with it... It was neither delicious nor bad, just a normal soupless tantanmen. The seasoning was lacking, and I wanted more sansho pepper, so I asked for it, but they only gave me a small amount... Maybe it's because the Chinese staff didn't understand Japanese well? That's unavoidable... It's supposed to be a tantanmen specialty shop, but frozen soupless tantanmen from the store tastes much better with chewier noodles. There were 6 or 7 people at lunchtime, but no one else ordered the soupless tantanmen. I feel like I want to try the soup version, but I probably won't come back here again.

After drinking in Ueno, I found a ramen shop nearby that was open until 23:00. I ordered a ramen set and a beer. The ramen and appetizers were surprisingly delicious, so I ended up ordering another beer. Highly recommended place.

Today I visited this restaurant. Pai Kuo Sour and Spicy Noodles for 1,150 yen. I've always been curious about this place every time I drive by, so I finally decided to check it out. They also had regular dan dan noodles, but I decided to try the sour and spicy noodles since I haven't had them before. I ordered it with extra spiciness and rice on the side. The soup had a mild sourness to it, which I thought was just right. The noodles were delicious and the rice complemented the dish well. Overall, it was quite tasty.

It is appreciated that they are open late. Went back to basics with tantanmen and sour and spicy noodles. Both were firm. The thin noodles and watery soup were well balanced. The mild flavor made the spiciness just right. The price of the gyoza is always a bit high, but ordered it anyway. However, it was sold out, so ended up ordering rice instead. Too bad I couldn't have the shumai. I'll definitely try it next time. Looking forward to it.

I visited around 6pm on Saturday night. The restaurant had a rating of over 3.5 on Tabelog and seemed popular, but the inside was quiet. Thanks to that, our food came out quickly. I ordered medium spicy, but it wasn't spicy at all. I'm glad I didn't choose mild. Next time, I want to try the soupless tantanmen.

The broth-less tantanmen had a nice sesame flavor, but the spiciness and numbness were lacking, and it didn't have the impact I was hoping for. I felt that the noodles could use more firmness and seasoning. I would like to try another menu item next time.

Paiko Tan Tan Men (extra spicy) with coriander on top, plus gyoza and a highball! Even though it's extra spicy, it's just right for me with the coriander on top. I always run out of alcohol before the gyoza arrives, but it's so delicious! The Paiko is small and the batter is crispy, but overall it's made really well. I had a great time eating today!

Periodically craving for Paiko✨ Today, I had the soup-less tantanmen with Paiko topping✨ The extra ¥300 is a bit of a dilemma, but the Paiko here is worth it✨ Unlike others, it is thinly coated and crispy✨ Furthermore, the thin slices allow it to mix well with the soup, enhancing the flavor✨ The complimentary rice is a nice touch as well✨ This was my first time trying the soup-less version, and the spiciness level was moderate. The thick noodles provided a satisfying chew, and despite being soup-less, there was still a decent amount of moisture which I personally enjoy✨ If the dish is too dry, I tend to get bored halfway through, so the moderate spiciness level makes it suitable for those who are not fans of very spicy food✨ Highly recommended for those who enjoy crispy Paiko✨

It is convenient as they are open until late at night. I was hungry so I had the Spicy Pork Bone Noodle. Rice was complimentary. I think the pork bone was a bit thin, but it was delicious. The soup didn't feel very spicy. It was a delicious spicy noodle dish that didn't make me feel thirsty.

■ Shop Name: Jyugenmu Tantanmen Ueno Branch
■ Location: Ueno Station
■ Budget: 1000-2000 yen
■ Ordered Menu:
- Tantanmen (normal noodle firmness, normal spiciness)
- Jyugenmu Grilled Gyoza (5 pieces)
Visited alone after drinking with friends in Ueno. It was just before 11 PM on a weekday, and most ramen shops were already closed, but this shop was still open. When in trouble after drinking, everyone, please come here! I ordered the above menu items.
Tantanmen (normal noodle firmness, normal spiciness):
The tantanmen stands out with its rich soy sauce flavor and sharpness. It may be a bit salty for some, but I found it perfect after drinking. The addition of yuzu peel gives a refreshing aftertaste, which is a nice touch. The thin noodles are reminiscent of Hakata tonkotsu ramen, but they have a good chewy texture. Personally, I would prefer a bit more richness and sesame flavor... I like a richer tantanmen. This one is on the lighter side, which may be a preference thing. Can someone recommend a rich tantanmen, please?
Jyugenmu Grilled Gyoza (5 pieces):
Plenty of minced meat! Large size! A satisfying dish that definitely requires rice! Rice is complimentary, which is appreciated. Of course, I ordered it.
That's all. The complimentary rice is a nice touch. I always feel the urge to eat tantanmen regularly. It's like an addictive impulse, almost like a seizure. I think this shop is quite delicious. Please visit and try it out. Thank you for the meal. I will come back again.

Dan dan noodles for 900 yen, firm noodles, extra spicy. Got a free seasoned egg with my service card. I just went to Takako in Tenjin last week, but ended up eating something similar again... I just love it. The extra spicy isn't that spicy, but the thin noodles are perfectly firm, the seasoned egg is flavorful (especially as a freebie in this day and age), the chashu is tender as always without any strong meaty taste, the staff are efficient, and overall, no complaints.

Today, I went out in the morning and had a late lunch nearby. I had tantanmen at Jugemu Ueno store. I ordered the large serving of tantanmen with rice. It was good, although not as good as other places I've tried. I got the normal level of spiciness, but I should have asked for the noodles to be cooked more firm.

I always passed by this restaurant on my way home and finally got a chance to go. I had high expectations because the Tabelog rating was good, but it wasn't particularly to my liking. It felt like a spicy ramen. It might be a hit for those who like that kind of flavor. I ordered the extra spicy but it wasn't spicy at all (I'm good with spicy food). The gyoza was delicious though!

When I visited at lunchtime, I was able to get in right away at this chain of restaurants that feels more relaxed. You can choose the firmness of the noodles, and I like the firm texture of these thin noodles. The sourness was not too strong, and it was different from what I expected from hot and sour soup, but it was delicious. I started to miss the pork rib noodles from the other chain restaurant.

I visited on a regular night and ordered the gratitude set A. I chose the following options for noodles & drink:
- Dan Dan noodles (you can choose the firmness of the noodles & spiciness)
- Highball
- Shumai, seasoned egg, and chicken ban ban ji
The Highball and set menu arrived! I thought it would be a mini size, but I was surprised by the generous size of the Shumai (☉。☉)! And it was juicy and delicious. Finally, the Dan Dan noodles arrived! The noodles were quite thin. Personally, I prefer curly noodles. The taste was average. But for this content, 1,380 yen is a great deal!!

Last Sunday, I decided to watch a film called "Crazy Fruit" at a theater in Ikebukuro, part of the Nikkatsu Roman Porno series. Although I had never seriously engaged with this genre before, I was intrigued by the reputation of this particular film from 1981. The intense energy and eerie allure of the young women in the film manipulating the direction of the chaotic events left a strong impression on me. Afterwards, I visited a ramen restaurant to reassess my standards for tantanmen noodles. The noodles, cooked to perfection and perfectly balanced in terms of firmness and spiciness, were delicious. The char siu pork, usually not my favorite, was surprisingly flavorful and I ended up finishing it all. As I learned about the origins of tantanmen noodles in Sichuan, China, I couldn't help but appreciate the passion and creativity of the dish's inventor, Chen Paopao. Leaving the restaurant, I felt a sense of determination to carry on and promote this culinary tradition in Japan. Despite the cloudy skies, the light breaking through the clouds seemed to brighten my mood. However, as I looked up at the unsettled western sky, I couldn't shake a feeling of unease.
