After enjoying gyoza and beer at "Gifu-ya" in Omoide Yokocho, I headed straight to this place. There were seasonal one-coin menu items available, so I chose two. I got the cabbage pickles, edamame, and chilled tofu appetizer set, as well as the summer skewer set (horse mackerel, eggplant, bacon). I'm not sure where the bacon fits into the summer theme. I also ordered two chu-hai drinks. A customer who arrived later was chatting with one of the staff in a friendly manner. It seems like they used to come here often but it had been a while. Apparently, they had esophageal cancer. I noticed that they were wearing loose pants tightly cinched with a belt, suggesting they used to have a different body shape. This place has a lot of history, it's quite moving. Suddenly, I saw a middle-aged man outside looking restless and standing alone. He didn't enter the restaurant, just stood there. Eventually, a young woman came out of the elevator and they walked off together. There's a matchmaking café in this building. In these cafés, you enter a room with a two-way mirror where women are waiting, and if a man likes a woman, they can talk in a private room and potentially become a couple. While the café claims to provide a wholesome meeting place, it often serves as a front for prostitution. I quickly paid my bill and followed the two of them, and they indeed disappeared into a hotel in Kabukicho.

I visited alone to adjust my schedule. I had a draft beer, lemon sour with punch, pickled ginger, and onion. It's cheap and easy to enjoy a quick drink! The beer is delicious and the lemon sour is not too sweet, which I like. The pickled ginger and onion were better quality and tastier than expected. The total bill was ¥1030, super cheap!

I went to Kabukicho after a long time and decided to go to Ryoma for some delicious kushikatsu. It was around 4 pm and the restaurant was a bit empty, probably because of the Obon holiday. I ordered the Hoppy White Set for 460 yen, Hoppy refill for 240 yen, cabbage for 10 yen, Summer 3-piece set [mackerel, eggplant, thick-cut bacon] for 500 yen, tamanegi for 90 yen, and potatoes for 90 yen, fish sausage for 150 yen. The total came to 1550 yen. The set is a good deal, so I recommend trying it out. The skewers start from 90 yen each. If you eat wisely, you can keep it under 2000 yen. From around 4 to 5 pm, there is also a dish by Mr./Ms. ○○ where you can choose the ingredients and have some light side dishes or snacks for around 500 yen. If you get the chance, you might want to try it out. Thank you for the meal. I will come back again☆

On a scorching hot Saturday, I headed to Shinjuku for some errands. I met up with my partner who had just finished an exam and was feeling down after receiving disappointing results. Despite that, they were in the mood for a drink, so I gladly agreed to accompany them. We planned to go to Toyokatsu, a place known for its cold beer and delicious kushikatsu, but to our surprise, the sign was different. It seemed like the place had closed down or moved. We checked online, but the latest review was from 3 years ago. Disappointed, we decided not to venture too far in this heat and ended up at Ryoma. It turned out to be the right choice. We arrived around 2 pm and there were only 7-8 customers ahead of us. We were seated at a table towards the back and immediately toasted with a beer. It was delicious! We ordered various kushikatsu, cabbage, and karaage, as well as additional items like tuna. We enjoyed a variety of drinks including beer, hoppy, shochu highball, lemon sour, and hot sake. The kushikatsu and karaage were particularly tasty. I highly recommend them. Despite being busy, the staff handled everything efficiently. Fried food really does go well with alcohol. I would definitely visit again if given the chance. Cheers to passing the next exam, my partner! Good luck!

The first stop of the day was at Kushikatsu Ryoma. It's a budget-friendly place to drink in this area. We started with a highball and ordered items like red ginger, chicken, and cheese. I always make sure to order the sausage. The person I was with also ordered shrimp and onions. The Maruef bottled beer looked delicious. Surprisingly, it wasn't very crowded this day, maybe because we went at an odd time. The total bill for two people was 3000 yen. It's a recommended place for a casual and affordable dining experience.

I met up in Shinjuku and had a light drink before the meeting. It was crowded on Saturday, but we found a place that wasn't too busy. I had a highball and hoppy. We also ordered some fried skewers, potato salad, and crab cream croquette. Everything was delicious.

I wandered around Kabukicho, which I'm not used to, and found a standing bar on Tabelog. It was around 5 o'clock, so there were about three solo customers. The owner, a woman in her 60s or 70s, welcomed me warmly along with two other staff members. The highball was 290 yen and the hot sake was also 290 yen, which was a great deal. The fried skewers were delicious. It's located at the entrance of Kabukicho, so I would like to visit again if I have the chance. Later, one of the staff members mentioned that they are proud of their cooking skills and that if customers choose the ingredients, they will come up with a dish accordingly. I was already full, but I definitely want to go back again. (✻´ν`✻)

(Enjoying the Night in Shinjuku 2/3)
After leaving the first stop at "Shimonoya," we walked a few minutes to visit the second stop with my junior, which was another place that caught my attention on Tabelog, "Tachinomi Ryoma." We arrived at 7:15 pm, and the place was about 80% full. We were seated in the best spot at the back corner, where we could observe the surroundings. Here is what we ordered:
[Menu for the night]
- Hoppy set x2 (460 yen each)
- Hoppy Naka x4 (240 yen each)
- Okonomi skewers x2 (360 yen each)
- Pickled ginger (90 yen)
- Potato (90 yen)
- Onion (90 yen)
- Smelt fish (190 yen)
- Godzilla fried (290 yen)
- Pickled vegetables assortment (290 yen)
- Cabbage (10 yen)
For the second stop, we started with a toast with Hoppy! There's something comforting about this drink. We used black Hoppy to reset our palate between the fried skewers.
[Okonomi skewers]
At my junior's request, we tried this item with no batter, made in a central kitchen. It was a new experience for me. The skewers were crispy on the outside and tender inside, topped with just the right amount of okonomiyaki sauce and mayonnaise.
[Fried skewers]
We chose a menu item that exuded history from the list. And the return of the sauce can! We soaked the vegetable skewers generously in the sauce, enjoying the flavors.
[Pickled ginger]
A personal favorite of mine, the pickled ginger skewer. The acidity of the ginger complements the sweetness of the sauce.
[Potato]
A menu item reminiscent of a dish from Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture! The fluffy potatoes were delightful.
[Onion]
Sweet onions that bring out the flavor, paired perfectly with the sauce.
[Smelt fish]
My junior's choice.
[Godzilla fried]
A menu item inspired by the Godzilla statue in Kabukicho!? It was described as a spicy dish, so as a fan of spicy food, I had to try it. The chicken wings were plain, with just chili powder sprinkled on top.
[Pickled vegetables assortment]
Simple and delicious pickled vegetables.
[Cabbage]
Cabbage for 10 yen. Some may not want it, so it's optional. If you want it, it's only 10 yen. A clever idea that makes it easy for customers to order more.
[Recommended item of the night]
- Okonomi skewers! It may be the most expensive skewer on the menu, but it's undeniably delicious!
[Editor's note]
- Tabelog score at the time of visit: 3.46
- I realized I haven't visited the "Kushiage Tera" that I used to frequent. I should go back sometime.
- And it reminded me of the thick batter fried skewers I had in Osaka.

I visited this place after a long time to kill time before my acquaintance's live show starts. It's nice that it's empty at this time. Surprisingly, there are many bars and izakayas in Shinjuku that allow smoking, but it's rare to find a non-smoking place open during the day. I ordered a highball for 360 yen and a recommended set of 5 drinks for 690 yen. I didn't order sashimi this time because I was disappointed last time, but the tempura was delicious. ^^

Before watching a 4DX movie in Shinbashi, I wanted to grab a quick bite to eat. But fried foods take time to prepare, so while waiting, I ended up ordering more drinks and my bill exceeded 2000 yen. Well, I guess I paid for the freshly fried food! (laughs)

When it comes to kushikatsu in Kabukicho, it has to be Ryoma! I had the Boppi white set with 440 tuna sashimi, 400 shiitake mushrooms, 150 maitake mushrooms, 90 onions, and 90 potatoes. No refills in the middle for 1320 yen. It's been a while since I've seen a "no double dipping" rule. This place is delicious and offers great value, I never get tired of it. I'll definitely come back again. Thank you for the meal! ◎

After working in a telephone life counseling job, I visited a place called Kushikatsu Ryoma, located deep in a building in Kabukicho, passing through the crowd of club touts. Inside, there was a nostalgic Narita Magic Mirror-style telekura. There was a counter where regular customers and groups were enjoying drinks separately. A boring variety show was playing on TV. The menu mainly consisted of kushikatsu, with the exception of a dish called Tochio Age. I registered on Instagram and got a free drink. I ordered kushikatsu such as cheese, thick-cut bacon, quail eggs, and pork. The kushikatsu was priced at either 90 yen or 190 yen, with a light and crispy coating and a delicious sauce. I skipped the grass for an additional 10 yen. The thick-cut bacon was a bit salty. Overall, it was a satisfying meal. I left after 20 minutes. As I walked around the area, I felt a bit down.

It's been a long time since I last visited this place. But the familiar charm that draws you in right away hasn't changed at all. I stood at the counter and ordered a glass of Hoppy white from the owner. I also ordered onions and pork without forgetting. First, I took a sip of the Hoppy - delicious! I dived into the onions as a sauce, crunching on the crispy batter with the sweetness of the sauce and onions. Then I dived into the pork - this is pure B-grade soul delight! Next up, I ordered shrimp and mushrooms. Tartar sauce was served with the mushrooms. After diving into the shrimp and mushrooms, I loaded up on the tartar sauce - delicious! I wanted to add shrimp too, but that would be breaking the rules (lol)! I thoroughly enjoyed my 30-minute experience at this old-fashioned standing bar in Shinjuku! Thank you for the meal.

In the sleepless town of Shinjuku, there is a standing bar where customers say it's the best. I visited and found the atmosphere to be great. Surprisingly, they have a variety of high-priced bottles of alcohol. I didn't order today, but it caught my interest. Eating kushikatsu while drinking is nice.

This day ended early, so I decided to have a standing drink at Kabukicho. It is located on the left side of Yasukuni Street, across from Central Road (Godzilla Road?). Like Kabukicho, it has a mix of adult entertainment shops and office buildings. Ryoma, a standing drink bar, is located on the first floor, with a meeting café on the basement and third floor where young women are constantly coming in. I imagined that all the women coming to this building were hostesses. (laughs) The place is in a good location in Kabukicho and the prices are cheap. I was handed a hot towel by the staff and ordered a Chu-hi for 290 yen each (tax included). The main dish is supposed to be kushikatsu, but I wasn't very hungry so I passed on it. There was also a spicy chicken wing dish called Godzilla Age with a Godzilla head nearby. The guy next to me ordered a three-point appetizer platter, so I also got the same for 570 yen. The appetizer platter of the day included sweet and sour pork, teriyaki chicken, and salmon with salsa sauce. I thought there wasn't a smell of cigarettes, but there was a smoking room (box) inside the restaurant. The sweet and sour pork combines pork with bamboo shoots, bell peppers, and paprika. The flavor is mild. The teriyaki chicken came in three pieces and the skin was slightly soft when cooked. The salmon with salsa sauce had finely chopped salmon and vegetables mixed with salsa sauce. It's nice to nibble on the three-point platter little by little. The restaurant is spacious, clean, and has a TV, so you can pass the time there. There are also figures of samurai from the end of the Edo period in the back. I finished with a lemon sour for 330 yen and a green tea highball for 330 yen. They are open from 3 pm on weekdays, so it's convenient. Next time, I'll try the kushikatsu.

Located right in the heart of Kabukicho, this standing bar specializing in deep-fried skewers offers a green tea highball for 330 yen. I ordered skewers with onions, garlic, and pickled ginger. I was looking forward to trying their skewer curry, but I was told it's a summer menu item and not available yet. Nevertheless, the freshly fried skewers were all delicious, especially the ginger one. I decided to add a Godzilla skewer with extra spiciness, and it was just the right amount of heat to go well with the drinks. This is not a place to linger, but perfect for a quick bite and drink. A gem in Kabukicho.

After finishing some errands in Kabukicho, I decided to stop for a drink. Stepping inside, I stood at the counter and ordered a draft beer for 450 yen. The other customers were discussing horse racing and complaining about the sixth wave of COVID-19. They were wondering why spectators weren't allowed at the racecourse. I drank about half of my beer and started feeling indifferent to their conversation. There was a TV monitor at the U-shaped counter showing the evening news. I decided to order some food - "Seafood Trio" for 570 yen, onion for 90 yen, Kabukicho fried dish M for 190 yen (mushrooms and fish sausage), and an additional chu-hi for 290 yen. The topic shifted to snowboarding, with someone mentioning how unpredictable it would be if you rotated in mid-air. I thought about the snowboarder Ayumu Hirano I had seen on TV. The Kabukicho fried dish was smaller than expected, but tasted good with tartar sauce. The scallops had a wild taste with both the adductor muscle and roe, the squid was decent, and the shrimp was unexpectedly delicious. We watched news about a Russian figure skater's doping scandal as I ordered another chu-hi. I decided to finish with a miso soup with clams. My bill came to 1,880 yen for three drinks. The customer next to me paid 2,800 yen, and some even paid over 3,000 yen. Despite the prices, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and I'm sure they'll come back. Outside, the hustle and bustle of Kabukicho continued.

On a clear winter Sunday afternoon, after having a beer at the Bellk in Shinjuku Station, I felt the urge to drink more. I remembered this place that I had been curious about and decided to visit. It was around 3 pm, with only a few customers - an old man enjoying horse racing on TV while having deep-fried skewers, and two couples drinking beer and shochu highballs. I ordered a beer, a recommended set of 5 skewers, and chilled tofu. The beer had a creamy foam and a good amount of carbonation, making it of high quality. The skewers, though slightly small, were crispy and delicious. The bacon skewer was especially outstanding, complementing the sauce perfectly. I switched to shochu highballs after my first beer, which were refreshing and easy to drink. The one-bite fried chicken I added was juicy and flavorful. My companion ordered Asahi's Extra Cold beer, which was high-quality and enjoyable. We ended up having 3 drinks each and a total of 3 dishes and 7 drinks for a little over 4000 yen. Some customers drank quickly, while others lingered over their drinks, focusing on the horse racing on TV. The atmosphere of standing and drinking in the afternoon was uniquely enjoyable. Although slightly pricier compared to other areas like Ueno and Akabane, I believe this place offers a solid quality. I'll save the famous Kabukicho fried dish for my next visit. Thank you for the meal.
