Near Shinjuku Alta, there is a long-established eel restaurant. This area doesn't have many eel restaurants, so I was always curious about this place whenever I passed by. The sign is quite recognizable, isn't it? Today, I had a chance to have lunch in Shinjuku after a long time, so I decided to come here without hesitation. The restaurant has a traditional feel and is very conveniently located. I arrived around 11:10 am on a weekday, and it seemed like I was the first customer. The first floor is a bit small, and there is also a second floor. I chose to sit at the counter where you can see the eel being grilled. Surprisingly, all the staff were elderly women. There were three of them, and I imagined the daughter was in charge of grilling, the mother as the proprietress, and the other staff as part-time. This is just my guess, so I don't know the actual situation. The daughter was in charge of grilling the eel. They all had a certain dignity due to their age. The staff in the dining area was very humble and polite. This time, I chose the eel bowl for lunch. It seemed like a better deal compared to the eel set since the only difference was the quantity. When I placed my order, they already had the steamed eel ready and carefully brushed it with sauce. Today's eel was from Aichi prefecture. They grilled it using gas. ▶︎Ordered Items: Eel Bowl 2300 yen Pickles, soup After about 5 minutes of brushing the sauce, it was ready. The eel had a nice glaze, but it didn't have a strong aroma. There were about 5 pieces of eel. When I tried it, well, it was a decently delicious eel. It had the taste of a specialty store, but there was nothing surprising about it. It seemed like they grilled it thoroughly, mainly focusing on the surface. The eel was not plump but rather moist and tender. It seemed like the type of gas grill they used had weak far-infrared rays, so it lacked a crispy texture. The surface was slightly hard, and the texture and mouthfeel of the inside were mediocre. This type of eel lacks a harmonious texture. However, the fat melted well, and the skin was tender. The fat had a sweet taste and a moderate aroma. Although the steaming was slightly strong, I could feel the care put into it. The eel itself was not bad. However, if it's not grilled well, eels from regular cultivation lack richness, so it felt somewhat unsatisfactory. Therefore, even though I could taste the fat, the umami flavor was quite weak. In that aspect, I felt a bit unsatisfied. The sauce was quite mild, not too strong in soy sauce flavor, with a hint of sweetness, making it easy to eat. The grilled flavor was also good. The amount of sauce on the eel was moderate, highlighting the natural taste of the ingredients. The rice was well-cooked and slightly soft. The sauce was just right. The pickles were salty. The soup had a strong dashi flavor, and the refreshing aroma of Mitsuba was good. Also, the sansho pepper here is quite delicious. Well, it's the eel I expected, haha. It's not cheap or expensive, just right for a casual meal. I'm glad I finally got to try it since I've always wanted to. Thank you for the meal~!
