From the underground Yushima Station, a quiet slope leads to a serene area. During the day, it may be a bit lively due to the proximity to Yushima Tenjin Shrine, but at night, it is mostly quiet with hardly any pedestrian traffic. In this location stands a long-established traditional tempura restaurant called "Tensho Honkan," with a history of over 90 years. Today, I was invited by a client. The main entrance of the restaurant is at the end of a narrow alley, with the annex on the right side. Upon entering, the first floor has counter seats surrounding the kitchen and table seats. The seats were mostly occupied, and it seems that without a reservation, it is difficult to get in at night. When I mentioned the name of my client, they had reserved a counter seat for us. Many of the customers seemed to be regulars. Soon, my client arrived, and we toasted with draft beer. We had ordered a course, and first, we were served with sesame tofu, vinegar dish, and assorted sashimi. The waitstaff moved around attentively. The tempura started with shrimp, and each item was carefully fried in front of us and served. Tempura is best enjoyed at the counter. Watching, I noticed that table seats and banquet tables were served on large plates. It may be unavoidable, but as time passes, unless the tempura is fried perfectly crispy in good oil, the oil starts seeping out. Lunch may be fine for eating quickly, but when drinking and eating, it takes time... The staff changed the oil paper on the plates each time and served us while gauging our eating pace. Each piece was fried light and crispy, served with grated daikon in tempura sauce or salt according to preference, delicious. We ordered small fish for the course and ended with a tempura rice bowl. It was a great experience to enjoy delicious tempura slowly in the dignified atmosphere of a long-established restaurant. Despite the not-so-high rating on food review websites, I was satisfied. We ended up drinking two bottles of wine between the two of us and got quite tipsy. Thank you for the wonderful meal.
