It's Sunday afternoon in Yushima. Today's plan is to immerse myself in the ancient Mexican civilization at the National Museum, then stroll all the way to Ginza. I'll have a drink with some animal protein, but before that, I need to have lunch. I found Tenjo on the way to Ueno Hill from Yushima Station. According to my notes on Tabelog, it was featured in a tempura special in the November 1995 issue. It took me 28 years to finally visit this place due to various reasons, but here I am. The dedication of a food lover is truly remarkable. I had forgotten, but as it is an old downtown establishment, the sesame oil in the tendon sauce might be on the sweeter side, which could be good for my tired stomach. When I entered, a customer at the end of the counter had just left, so I took that seat and ordered the Joten Donburi that was displayed outside. The slightly higher price didn't bother me, as they must be recommending it if they put up a poster outside. I enjoyed some warm green tea while waiting, watching the elderly chef fry the tempura in front of me. Soon, the bowl arrived with a clam miso soup. Upon opening the lid, I found two saimaki, one anago, shrimps, eggplant, lotus root, shishito pepper, and shrimp tempura, all covered in a tantalizing golden batter, enticing my appetite. The sweet aroma of the sauce matched my expectations and made me even hungrier. I couldn't resist any longer and started with the saimaki. Delicious! This rich tempura bowl is perfect when you're feeling tired. It filled me with energy and motivation. I might even be able to walk all the way to Shinagawa now. And that's a wrap!

I ordered the Tempura Omakase Course (top grade) which consisted of tempura dishes throughout. There was no unpleasant greasiness, but I wished there were some small dishes or side dishes to break up the meal. The tempura eel bones were a good snack to go with drinks. Overall, nothing stood out and the cost performance was not great, so I probably won't visit again.

Having lunch with my in-laws at a traditional restaurant. How about some tempura? We ordered the standard lunch course, and noticed two young guys next to us treating their junior colleagues to a better meal. Oh well, maybe next time... I decided to order an extra serving of maru-ju, and the sweet potato that took 40 minutes to cook was beyond delicious. My father-in-law was delighted and even posted a photo on Facebook. Mission accomplished. We ended the meal with a cup of green tea. I suddenly remembered a time from my childhood when I used to ask for both green tea and miso soup, but now I wouldn't do that anymore.

Yesterday's lunch was at "Tensho" (Yushima branch). It's a restaurant with a traditional feel from the gate in Yushima (photo 1). The menu outside the restaurant is shown in photo 2. I arrived a little after the opening time of 11:30 am and was the first customer. I ordered the "Lunch Tempura Bowl (¥1,500)" that I had decided on in advance. It arrived in about 4 minutes (photo 3). The tempura was high quality and moist, with a nice texture and a subtle flavor that was easy to eat and delicious. The miso soup was also flavorful with a strong taste. The atmosphere was good, clean, bright, and relaxing. Additionally, I was able to pay with a credit card.

Today, I took a walk around the historic Yushima area and decided to have a luxurious lunch at "Tendo-san's Tempura Bowl." The entrance from the street with a stylish curtain was inviting. The waitress greeted me with a warm "welcome." The counter had 7 seats, with only one salaryman at a table in the back. I ordered the tempura bowl without any dislikes, and the chef swiftly prepared it with skillful movements. The sound of tempura frying in the kitchen was soothing. The tempura was served quickly, and each piece was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The shrimp was plump and juicy, and the chili pepper was not too spicy. The clam miso soup was served piping hot and flavorful. It was a quiet and relaxing meal, providing the right nutrition and excellent hospitality. I felt ready to tackle my work in the afternoon with a refreshed mind. It's important to have good input to produce good output, and this meal definitely helped me achieve that.

"Tensho Yushima Main Store" is a delicious tempura restaurant in Yushima, known for its tempura dishes. Established in 1909, this long-standing restaurant exudes a sense of tradition and elegance. I ordered the "Tendon (tempura rice bowl) - Upper" for 3800 yen. The tempura was fried to perfection, with a moist texture, and paired well with the Edo-style sweet and savory sauce and rice. While the restaurant's rating on Tabelog may not be very high, the tempura rice bowl was simply delicious. - Name: Tensho Yushima Main Store - Google Maps: Tempura Tensho Yushima Main Store - Phone: 03-3831-6571 - Nearest Station: 222m from Yushima Station - Business Hours: 11:30-14:00, 17:00-21:00 (Open on Sundays) - Closed on Wednesdays - Reservations: Available - Budget: Dinner 5000-5999 yen, Lunch 1000-1999 yen - Other Information: Private rooms available, all seats non-smoking, no parking #YushimaGourmet #YushimaLunch #YushimaTendon #Tendon #UenoLunch #UenoTendon #DeliciousTendon #GourmetLovers #GourmetInstagram #GurumeMemo #GourmetLoversWanted #FoodPornGram #FoodTerrorGram #TabeLog #Foodstagrammer #FoodTerrorism #GourmetTravel #DeliciousnessIsHappiness #GourmetFriendsWanted #FoodieClub #FoodieGirls #FoodieGuys #WantToConnectWithFoodies #KantoGourmet #FoodReportGram #GourmetReporter #FoodWriter #BGradeGourmetInformation #TokyoGourmet

A tempura restaurant established in the 42nd year of the Meiji era (1909), over 110 years ago. The concept is to enjoy the taste of 100 years ago by taking a time trip. I ordered the "Tempura Set Meal (¥5000 including tax)" for lunch. Other menu items include the weekday-only "Tempura Rice Bowl with Clam Soup and Pickles (¥1500 including tax)" and "Tempura Rice Bowl (¥3000 including tax)". Tempura is served with tempura dipping sauce and salt, along with grated daikon radish and dishes for salt. I started with the shrimp, which had a thick egg batter. The shrimp was fried perfectly, with a soft and hot inside. Next was the "Megochi" fish, which was delicious with the grated daikon and tempura dipping sauce. I then enjoyed white rice and red miso soup with clams. The tempura shrimp head was crispy and tasty. The eel was served next, and I savored it with both salt and tempura dipping sauce. The tempura had a generous portion, including a crunchy eel bone snack. Vegetables like lotus root, asparagus, and eggplant followed, each delicious when dipped in salt and tempura sauce. The meal ended with a tempura shrimp fritter, which was flavorful and satisfying. For dessert, I had a hojicha-flavored pudding, which was tasty. While there were no standout tempura pieces, the eel bone snack was memorable. The variety was a bit lacking, but for ¥5000, it was a decent experience. It may not be authentic Meiji-era tempura, but it certainly felt like a taste of that time. Despite the rapid evolution and price increase of tempura, it's nice to see affordable options like this restaurant still available.

I decided to leave Ueno Zoo and head towards Ike-no-hata-guchi. From there, maybe I'll go to Yushima or Tenjo. It's still early, so I opted for the tempura omakase course. It probably includes dishes like kiss fish, young ayu sweetfish and shiitake mushrooms, and abalone mushrooms stuffed with shrimp and sea urchin as extras. I felt a bit unsatisfied, so I added eggplant and squid. In the end, the Kumamoto red eggplant was the best, with a fluffy texture. The shrimp, sea urchin, and sweetfish were all delicious. Next time, I'll ask for fried marjoram as well.

This is a well-established tempura restaurant with a history of over 90 years. It may be difficult to visit at night, but their lunch set is only 1100 yen! It includes 2 shrimp, anago, sweet potato, shishito pepper, and maitake mushroom. The shrimp is crispy and the anago is tender and delicious.

I had the lunch tendon at a long-established tempura restaurant. The lunch menu is more affordable compared to dinner. The staff's service is very polite and kind. The tendon is generously covered in sauce. The tempura here is originally crispy, but with so much sauce, it feels like some of its goodness is lost. Personally, I think it would be nice to have a little less sauce on the tendon. The ingredients are generally on the smaller side, which makes it easy to eat and I like that. I was happy to see two shrimp in the tendon. The red miso soup is delicious, showing that this restaurant is a top-notch place. I believe the real specialty of this place is not the tendon. I would like to try their regular tempura as well.

I enjoyed the omakase course at a charming traditional tempura restaurant in Yushima. They serve tempura made with seasonal ingredients, and each dish is freshly fried and served at a pace that matches your eating speed. The performance at the counter was fantastic, especially when they were frying the ayu tempura right before serving. It was amazing! The dry Japanese sake paired really well with the tempura. The owner, I think, was a very friendly and lovely person, and I had a great time chatting with them.

It's like an old-fashioned tempura restaurant, for better or for worse. The difference between the lunch tendon and the regular tendon is said to be whether the shrimp is frozen or fresh amaebi. It was my first time, so I tried the entry-level option. It was tasty without any fishy smell, but I felt like the sauce was a bit lacking. I ended up adding salt. On the table, there was salt, shichimi (seven-flavor chili pepper), and yuzu pepper.

History is getting in the way? It's important to continue preserving the unchanged taste, but it's also important to evolve with the times. It probably doesn't match the current era. The taste is as expected from the appearance when fried. The atmosphere is understandable, but the quality and price don't match.

From the underground Yushima Station, a quiet slope leads to a serene area. During the day, it may be a bit lively due to the proximity to Yushima Tenjin Shrine, but at night, it is mostly quiet with hardly any pedestrian traffic. In this location stands a long-established traditional tempura restaurant called "Tensho Honkan," with a history of over 90 years. Today, I was invited by a client. The main entrance of the restaurant is at the end of a narrow alley, with the annex on the right side. Upon entering, the first floor has counter seats surrounding the kitchen and table seats. The seats were mostly occupied, and it seems that without a reservation, it is difficult to get in at night. When I mentioned the name of my client, they had reserved a counter seat for us. Many of the customers seemed to be regulars. Soon, my client arrived, and we toasted with draft beer. We had ordered a course, and first, we were served with sesame tofu, vinegar dish, and assorted sashimi. The waitstaff moved around attentively. The tempura started with shrimp, and each item was carefully fried in front of us and served. Tempura is best enjoyed at the counter. Watching, I noticed that table seats and banquet tables were served on large plates. It may be unavoidable, but as time passes, unless the tempura is fried perfectly crispy in good oil, the oil starts seeping out. Lunch may be fine for eating quickly, but when drinking and eating, it takes time... The staff changed the oil paper on the plates each time and served us while gauging our eating pace. Each piece was fried light and crispy, served with grated daikon in tempura sauce or salt according to preference, delicious. We ordered small fish for the course and ended with a tempura rice bowl. It was a great experience to enjoy delicious tempura slowly in the dignified atmosphere of a long-established restaurant. Despite the not-so-high rating on food review websites, I was satisfied. We ended up drinking two bottles of wine between the two of us and got quite tipsy. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Today, I had a lunch meeting with 5 people. We ordered the classic tempura set meal, which costs ¥3,500. The tempura bowl alone costs around ¥1,000. There are options of tempura with soup and salt, but I personally like tempura with grated daikon in soup. The miso soup with clams is also delicious. The tempura is crispy and delicious, with shrimp, smelt, vegetables, lotus root, conger eel, and mixed tempura coming out one after another. You have to eat carefully to make sure you have enough rice.

The atmosphere from the entrance is very nice. Walking down the narrow cobblestone path across from Yushima Tenjin, you will be greeted by a warm, Showa retro-style noren curtain. I enjoyed tempura with shrimp, smelt, spring vegetables, and megochi. The tempura had a crispy texture without any greasiness, and it was consistently delicious. I think it's a perfect place for a date or business entertainment.

I visited during a public holiday at lunchtime. I was surprised to find that the tempura bowls were priced 1000 yen higher on holidays compared to weekdays. I wondered if the contents were also different. With prices like 2400 yen for a regular tempura bowl and 3600 yen for a deluxe tempura bowl, my expectations were high. However, I was disappointed to find that the shrimp was surprisingly small and didn't have the expected crispy texture - instead, it was soggy and oily. The homemade pickles were tasty though.
