Tokyo Gourmet Exploration! Shinjuku Ward, Shinjuku Go-chome Edition. Specialties include eel skewers and game meat skewers. Limited to lunch, eel omelet rice! "Kushidachi Game and Eel Skewers Shinjuku Tora Hako" First visit! On a cloudy winter day, a little chilly, I decided to take a walk for a change of pace and to check out a homework restaurant in Shinjuku Go-chome for lunch! From Shinjuku Sanchome Station, cross Yasukuni Street, walk about 8 minutes, turn right at the Shinjuku Go-chome signal, and head towards a popular Chinese restaurant in the middle of San-nan-gai Street. Along the way, I noticed a shop on the first floor of a building with white tiles, with a traditional Japanese house-style exterior. Established in 2017, a hidden gem of a popular game meat and vegetable skewer restaurant caught my eye. When I looked at the lunch menu, I saw eel omelet rice and knew I had to try it, so I changed my plans and entered the restaurant. Specializing in eel skewers and game meat skewers, the lunch menu includes eel omelet rice! "Kushidachi Game and Eel Skewers Shinjuku Tora Hako" First visit! Inside the restaurant, the atmosphere is clean and calming, with a modern Japanese interior. I sat at the counter, where there were raised table seats in the back. First, I looked through the menu. There were two types of eel omelet rice: regular and deluxe, with the deluxe version including grilled eel. After some hesitation, I ordered the deluxe eel omelet rice for ¥1950. I started with a small dish that came with the set, which I enjoyed with a glass of beer to quench my thirst while waiting. After 15 minutes, a lacquered box arrived with plenty of fluffy egg and eel on top. In the middle, there were finely sliced grilled eel and a special sauce sprinkled with sesame seeds. When I took a bite, the creamy half-cooked egg melted in my mouth, combined with the rich flavors of the eel and sauce. The crispy grilled eel skin and tender meat between the skin and flesh had a deliciously rich and satisfying taste. The combination of the half-cooked egg, grilled eel, and rice was incredibly flavorful and delicious. As I continued to eat, the grilled eel peeked out from under the half-cooked egg. The crispy skin and tender meat of the grilled eel were perfectly cooked, with a fragrant and rich flavor. The combination of the half-cooked egg, grilled eel, and rice was unbelievably delicious. This unexpected find of a restaurant serving eel skewers and game meat skewers offers exceptional flavors that I can't get enough of. I definitely want to come back for dinner to try the skewers. This outstanding dish has become a favorite, and I have already decided to revisit in the evening. Absolutely delicious!

As always, you can choose and enjoy side dishes while waiting for delicious dishes to be served, allowing you to enjoy your meal at a good pace. Additionally, the selection of side dishes and recommended dishes changes depending on the season, so you won't get bored and I visit regularly. Lunch also offers options like grilled fish and eel rice bowls, making it a recommended choice for daytime dining.

Grilled game meat and eel skewers at Shinjuku Torabako @ Shinjuku Sanchome. On the first Wednesday of August 2023, at 1:40 PM. When I entered, there were no empty seats. It was close to the last order at 2 PM, so many people were starting to leave. "I'll prepare your seat right away!" I was seated almost immediately at the counter near the entrance. A small cup of cold tea was served in a teacup. The staff explained that many items were sold out, but I had my eye on a popular menu item listed at the top of the menu. ■ Eel omelette rice, 950 yen. "Oh, I'll have a small beer too!" ■ Small beer, 200 yen. It's great to have this option in this season. "That will be 1,150 yen!" I paid in advance and the bill was settled. The bento box had a lid with a golden background and a picture of a palace ball. I opened the lid right away. The fluffy yellow egg caught my eye. In the center, there was a small amount of light green leek garnish. The simple and modest colors were also beautiful. Two small side dishes were included. The pickled radish with plum vinegar was delicious with a crispy texture and a perfect balance of saltiness and acidity. I could have easily eaten another serving. Another dish was "Iburi Gakko and cream cheese potato salad." Oh, this was also dangerously good. Next time I visit, I'll probably end up ordering the "medium size" version. Now, for the main dish, the omelette rice. It was not the typical runny version, but a fluffy version of a large scrambled egg. And to have it with eel sauce, it was a luxurious treat. It was a brilliant idea to create this menu item. For an additional 1,050 yen, you can have the "Omu DX" with grilled eel, but the diced eel was just right to complement the quality of the egg. Even if I had the budget for it on my next visit (haha), I would still choose this menu. ...With a "medium size" (haha). The sauce was already poured under the egg, so I could enjoy it evenly until the end. As I finished with a delicious miso soup with thick fried tofu, the dish of the guest who had been seated right by the entrance when I arrived was served. It took quite a while, I wonder what it was. The lid was opened. It was a stacked eel dish. They were paying at the cash register. Eel dish... special grade!? I wonder how much it is... Eh? 4,300 yen!? It must be worth it for this quality. I want to order a big beer with this! (haha) The various fish being grilled in front of me had thick and large pieces. Lunch seems like a good deal here. I'll definitely come back.

When I used to work near here, I visited this place several times. I was impressed by the deliciousness of the fish. I came close by after a long time, so I decided to stop by. Unfortunately, the salmon I was looking for was sold out, so I tried a different type of fish. On this day, I had the "Sabazuke" (cured mackerel) for 950 yen. It was my first time trying cured mackerel, and it was delicious. The juicy and plump flesh was full of flavor and the lack of bones made it even better. I had to finish it quickly in about 10 minutes as I had to rush to my next appointment, but I would definitely order it again if it's on the menu. The side dishes were also tasty. It would be nice to have options other than fish, like vegetables and meat. I will visit again when I am nearby. This restaurant operates on a prepayment system. According to other reviews, it seems like they accept payment methods other than cash as well. Please confirm with the staff for more details. Thank you for the meal.

*Today's evening appetizers (all-you-can-eat): 1,100 yen Eel liver and mustard greens: 700 yen Grilled eel (with sauce, salt): 2,800 yen Mixed plate of deer and wild boar: 1,700 yen A cozy little izakaya located in a narrow alley in Shinjuku Go-chome! It gets crowded on weekends, so be prepared for standing room only! They offer an interesting combination of eel and game meat as their specialty! The eel is grilled in a Kansai-style, starting from raw instead of steaming. It lacks a bit of plumpness, but it's crispy and fragrant, making it a great match with sake! It's quite rare to find Kansai-style eel in Kanto, so it's worth a try! The eel liver and mustard greens are on the small side and the flavor is a bit mild. As for the game meat, the deer and wild boar are recommended over the eel! They are low in fat, high in protein, tender, and easy to eat! Plus, the mixed plate is reasonably priced at just over 1,000 yen! Another recommendation is the one-time all-you-can-eat evening appetizers for 1,100 yen. The small plates are 1,100 yen and the large plates are 1,600 yen, but personally, I think the large plate is a better deal! This time, I had tomato rakkyo, deep-fried eggplant, vinegared seaweed, and white wine-steamed mussels. They are all rich in flavor, but go well with alcohol and are perfect for snacking while drinking! They offer a wide selection of sake, including Hakurakusei and Juyondai, for tasting comparisons. They even had my favorite, Ten'non! For those who prefer wine with their meat, they also have wine available! The age range of customers is on the older side, and since the restaurant is small, it's recommended to make reservations on weekends!

Shinjuku 5th Avenue. I will introduce a popular eel izakaya restaurant located in a zone with few dining options! It is located between the cat cafe Arle and Yoshino, where the delicious mapo tofu is served. This izakaya specializes in eel dishes, and you can enjoy eel-based lunches during the day! The main attraction is the eel omelette rice for 950 yen. I was torn between the 2000 yen Unagi Omu DX, but decided to go for the eel omelette rice for better cost performance. When you open the lid, you will see a fluffy omelette covering a bowl with chopped eel scattered on top, and the combination of rice, egg, eel, and sauce is amazing. The side dishes and miso soup were also delicious. The DX must have even more eel on top. I will definitely order it next time when I feel like splurging. I am also curious about the fried chicken set and grilled fish. This is a highly recommended restaurant that I will definitely visit again. It was so delicious! Thank you for the meal!

I went to my favorite Shinjuku Torihako. I was able to enter smoothly on a Friday night. I could leisurely drink in a private room at the back. They also served complimentary drinks for their 6th anniversary. The minced cutlet and grilled eel were both incredibly delicious. They have a wide variety of sake which was amazing, so I will come back for both lunch and dinner.

I heard that the eel was delicious, so I visited the restaurant. The menu for eel alone was plentiful! I was overwhelmed by all the choices and my eyes started swimming on the menu. The eel was soft, fragrant, and very delicious. And for those who love game meat, you won't be disappointed. The game meat dishes were delicious, with no gamey taste and tender texture. Even those who aren't fans of game meat would enjoy it. The all-you-can-eat appetizer option was also an interesting system. My favorites were the eel skewers (head and skin), deer and wild boar mincemeat cutlets, and game meat skewers (wild boar and deer yakitori). The combination of various textures and delicate flavors was delightful. It went well with Japanese sake.

This is my first visit to this restaurant located a 5-6 minute walk from Shinjuku Sanchome Station. It is around 1:30 pm on a weekday and the place is about 80% full, with a high percentage of female customers. There are counter seats and table seats available. Today, I ordered the Unagi Omurice for 950 yen. This restaurant is known for its eel skewers and game meat, and the reviews for this dish were quite good. It was served in about 5 minutes, accompanied by miso soup, yellow pickled radish, and simmered carrots. The miso soup had fried tofu and cabbage in it, with a gentle and delicious flavor. The simmered carrots were also well-seasoned with a moderate amount of salt. The main dish was mostly fluffy omelette with finely chopped eel meat, green onions, sesame seeds, and mitsuba mixed in. The flavor of the eel was subtly present and went well with the fluffy egg and rice. This unique combination is a great idea that showcases the use of eel in a restaurant. The grilled fish ordered by others around me looked delicious as well, with a variety of side dishes. I might try the grilled fish next time. Overall, it was a delightful meal.

I visited this restaurant for the umami eel dish. They offer a menu where you can choose 3 side dishes to go with your drinks, which really complement the alcohol well. The eel was delicious as always. One dish that stood out was the venison tantan tofu (¥700) recommended to me - it had a nice balance of heat and tofu's gentleness. The eel was also fantastic, whether with salt or sauce, both were delicious and a must-try!

I went to my favorite restaurant, Tora Bako, for dinner after having lunch there. It's a game meat restaurant, and the eel was incredibly delicious. The bear, deer, and wild boar dishes were all prepared without any strong flavors, making them easy to eat and delicious. Every dish was delicious without exception. They offer a variety of drinks, including ones you can make yourself for 100 yen, a selection of craft beers, and a wine list that includes sake from Shinsei Sake Brewery. It was amazing. I will definitely come back for dinner again.

I came back to Tora-bako. This time, I wanted to eat eel omelette rice, but I ordered the salted mackerel set meal and half-fried chicken. The salmon was big and fatty, and it was incredibly delicious. The grated radish had flavor in it, so I didn't need soy sauce. The fried chicken was also very tasty, so I will come back to drink at night next time.

I ordered the eel omelette rice. It was incredibly delicious. The egg was fluffy and the eel was easy to eat without any prickly parts. It was the best lunch. They also offer a large salmon and grilled fish set meal, and it was nice to be able to watch them cook at the counter while waiting. They only accept cash for payment, but I love the atmosphere and the taste, so I will definitely come back again. It seems like they are also open at night, so I would like to try going there at night as well.

Warm lighting, wooden counter, and friendly staff make this izakaya a cozy place to be. The self-service side dishes and drinks are enjoyable! They serve a generous amount of side dishes. The eel kabayaki was delicious with a crispy exterior and tender interior. The salted wasabi goes well with alcohol. I usually don't like game meat, but the one I had here was not gamey and easy to eat.

Eel, game meat... Attracted by those words, I went to this shop. I was seated at a small counter. They had a menu for a platter of appetizers where you could choose a plate and they would load it up with the dishes you selected. It was fun! I got a huge serving and was very satisfied. The drinks were also unique. You could pick your favorite drink from the fridge and then use the drink bar for sours or shochu by inserting a coin. I made a "Mommy Sour" after a long time. Maybe the sour was a bit lacking? It ended up tasting like a regular Mommy drink. I also ordered skewers of game meat and eel to enjoy different flavors, and I was very satisfied! The taste was delicious, and I thought it was a very interesting and relaxing idea. I definitely want to come back to this shop.

I joined a small drinking party. We had the 3,500 yen course with a 1,500 yen all-you-can-drink option. The restaurant is located in Shinjuku 5th Avenue Third Street. Once you cross Yasukuni Street, the atmosphere changes quite a bit. The restaurant is long and narrow with tables at the back. The drink system is interesting - you make your own drinks at the counter with a wide variety of options. I enjoyed Kinmiya + Vice a lot and got properly drunk haha. The food was also good, with a lineup ranging from side dishes, sashimi, rare delicacies, tamagoyaki, grilled vegetables, game meat, and eel bowls. It's a fun selection that you wouldn't find in more upscale places. The party was lively and the drinks kept flowing. The seating is a bit basic, so the comfort level is a bit disappointing. It has a strong casual vibe, so it might not be suitable for a more formal crowd, but I think it's a great place for a gathering with friends.

★ Just a 3-minute walk from Shinjuku-sanchome Station, and an 8-minute walk from Shinjuku-gyoemmae Station! ★ Enjoy eel and game meat dishes! ★ Dinner seems even more exciting! This time, I ordered... ◎ Eel Omelette Rice ¥950 I thought it would be interesting to visit a specialty store for eel and game meat ☺️ The eel omelette rice I ordered this time came in a bento box, with finely chopped grilled eel on top of the omelette rice. When you mix the grilled eel with the egg and rice, the smoothness of the egg and the richness of the eel sauce combine to create an exquisite deliciousness. The grilled eel had a crispy skin and a tender flesh, and it was very delicious. Another menu item called "Unagi Omu DX" includes grilled eel on top of the eel omelette rice. It's a bit pricey, but it must be absolutely delicious... The restaurant itself has a stylish, modern izakaya interior. And there's an interesting drink menu for dinner called "Self-Service Sour" where customers can make their own mixed drinks (sours, chu-hai, highballs, etc.) using a vending machine. It sounds intriguing, so I'll definitely try it out for dinner next time. Thank you for the meal, I'll visit again ☺️

Shinjuku Torabako in Shinjuku Sanchome Station, Sanbangai, is my favorite restaurant for lunch set meals. One weekday, I arrived at 11:30 for my afternoon shift and was lucky to be the first customer with no one else there. I was craving grilled fish, so I ordered the salt-grilled silver cod set meal with natto on the side. They grilled the fish over charcoal and soon brought it out on a tray along with various side dishes. With the small side dishes, the grilled fish, and rice, I was satisfied with the meal. When I asked for a second helping of rice, they generously gave it to me at no extra charge. The white rice was delicious! Delicious white rice is a sign of a great restaurant! Of course, not just the rice, but the grilled fish and side dishes were also tasty. I will definitely visit again. Thank you for the meal.

-Reservation is recommended- There are deer, boar, rabbit, whale, etc. Self-service drinks are fun, but in the end, I ended up ordering normally. On this day, the store opened at 17:30 due to circumstances. I wandered around for about 30 minutes to kill time. I was surprised to see many good-looking restaurants around. I chose this place because I wanted to keep the price of game meat and drinks low, and they have self-service. They offer various options such as deer, boar, rabbit, and whale. The deer tartare had no gamey taste at all, and the game flavor was quite subdued. It might not be satisfying for those looking for the true game taste, but if you think of it as tartare, it's delicious. For the self-service drinks, you insert a 100 yen coin and one serving of alcohol comes out automatically, allowing you to choose your own mixer. It's fun to have various mixers available. The summer orange pulp was a hit. I wish there was a bit more eel kabayaki... It takes some time for the food to come out, so it's best to order first. It was crowded with young people. I felt like if I hadn't made a reservation and arrived at a different time than the opening, I wouldn't have been able to get in. I recommend making a reservation. Thank you for the meal.

A cozy izakaya located a short walk away from the hustle and bustle of Shinjuku, in Shinjuku Sanchome. You can enjoy eel and recently popular game meat at a reasonable price here. ◆Location: 4 minutes walk from Shinjuku Sanchome Station. ◆Business hours: [Weekdays] Lunch 11:30-14:30 (L.O 14:00), Dinner 17:00-23:00 (L.O 22:00) [Sat/Holidays] Dinner 17:00-23:00 (L.O 22:00) ◆Regular holiday: Sunday ◆Crowdedness: I visited during a weekday lunchtime. It's usually easy to get a seat. ◆Recommended dish: I ordered the "Eel Omelette Rice" (¥950). They only serve lunch on weekdays. The friendly staff serves customers while engaging in casual conversation. The eel omelette rice was a perfect combination of fluffy omelette and tender eel. The miso soup also has a comforting taste that helps you forget the chaos of Shinjuku. I would love to visit this place for dinner as well.
