I searched for the perfect environment for a remote year-end party and found Kanataro. Although I don't usually go to large, general izakayas like this, I decided to visit this place in Akihabara because they offer private rooms, WiFi, and all-you-can-drink options. Located on the 7th floor of a mixed-use building, Kanataro has a nostalgic feel to it. As I was led to a private room, I noticed that there were many tables with roasters, indicating that Kanataro was trying to transition into a yakiniku restaurant ahead of Watami. The restaurant was only about 30% full, which made it quite challenging for the staff. The private room I was seated in was a semi-private room without a door, and despite being designed for 8 people, there were only 3 of us, allowing us to maintain social distance. I set up my computer for the remote year-end party, using the restaurant's WiFi with a password provided by the staff. We ordered the 2-hour all-you-can-drink option for 1,500 yen, starting with draft beer. The appetizer was a crunchy snack similar to dried radish, which made me realize how this type of izakaya is moving away from the traditional style. For food, we ordered the signature dice steak, fried potatoes, mentaiko rice cakes, and mentaiko french fries, creating a carb-filled feast. We ended the meal with crispy cartilage karaage, skipping the vegetables. The dice steak was as delicious as ever, and I wondered if the quality of the meat had improved since Kanataro shifted towards yakiniku. We quickly ordered more drinks, including more beer, shochu highballs, whiskey highballs, and whiskey sodas, which were a great deal. The whiskey soda came in a glass, while the highball was served in a mug, with the only difference being a slice of lemon. Even after the all-you-can-drink option ended, we were allowed to stay at our table, which was much appreciated. We ended the night with a large highball. In the end, the remote year-end party lasted 1 hour and 30 minutes, while our real-life gathering of 3 people lasted 3 hours and 30 minutes, creating a lively atmosphere. The total cost for the 3 of us was just over 12,000 yen. Thank you for the meal.
