When summer comes, I always crave tempura for some reason. On this day, I had planned to go for an outdoor lunch, but I was already in tempura mode since the morning. Ark Hills is a bit far from my workplace, but I walked in the hot weather just for tempura. This place has its main store in Nihonbashi, which usually has long lines, but this branch seems to be a hidden gem. They serve continuously, so if you go at a different time, you can get a seat without waiting. It was just past 2 pm when there happened to be an available table, and I was seated smoothly that day as well. Before that, I ordered at the ticket machine on the left side of the restaurant. Tempura Rice Bowl - 1380 yen. The highlight of this tempura rice bowl is the egg tempura. The egg tempura is quite raw. You crack it over the rice and eat it with the special sauce, which is the recommended way to eat it at the restaurant. I'm not a fan of raw eggs, so last time I asked to change it to vegetables. This time, I took a chance and asked if they could cook it well-done, and they said it would be hard-boiled but it was okay with me. So, I requested it to be hard-boiled. A few other people also made the same request. While waiting, I snacked on the condiments placed on the counter. The squid with yuzu, salmon with mentaiko, all of them are deliciously seasoned. After about 15 minutes, the set with rice, miso soup, tempura dipping sauce, etc., was served. Finally, the tempura arrived. The tempura is served in two rounds. First round: squid tempura, shrimp tempura, shiitake mushroom, green pepper. Second round: pumpkin, eggplant, egg, squid tempura. The squid tempura with large pieces of squid cut into strips is tender, and the contrast between the crispy batter and the softness of the squid is excellent. It goes well with salt. The shiitake mushroom is also large and satisfying to eat. The aroma of sesame oil is appetizing. The egg that I requested to be hard-boiled was cooked through, so even though I don't like raw eggs, I could enjoy it without worries. Although the price has increased due to the change from sandfish to pumpkin, being able to eat freshly fried tempura at the counter for lunch is a blessing. The miso soup also has plenty of large clams and a rich dashi flavor. The waiting time is long, and I end up using my entire lunch break, but compared to the main store, the waiting time is shorter at this hidden gem. I will visit again.
