I ended up getting busy as February comes to an end, so I decided to go to Iroriya in Akihabara for a drink after a long time. I originally planned to have some sake, soba, and snacks, but I ended up drinking too much shochu (from the Takayama series). The restaurant is located on the 10th floor of a building in front of Akihabara Station, with a spacious area divided by walls and open doors, making it a great place for 4-5 people to drink and chat. It's perfect for us salarymen. We talked about work, home, and other things. I initially thought of starting with beer, but I felt like conquering the three types of shochu from Nishizakura Brewery - Hakuto In, Ayamurasaki In, and Koto In. So, I started with sweet potato shochu. The first one, Hakuto In, had a clear color and was relatively refreshing. I drank it with soda, and it was suitable as an aperitif. It paired well with the yellowtail carpaccio appetizer. However, shochu can be quite intoxicating. The second one was Ayamurasaki In, with a slightly yellowish and thick texture. I switched to drinking it on the rocks. I ordered namero (minced fish) and avocado salad to pair with the rich flavor. The creamy food and the sweet potato flavor combination worked well. I was getting pleasantly drunk, the conversation was lively, and everything felt comfortable. The third one was Koto In. I took a sip thinking about the sweet potato used in Koto, like roasted sweet potatoes. It had a standard sweet potato shochu flavor. It was well-balanced and easy to drink, without feeling too intoxicated. I thought it was dangerous, so I ordered a pork cutlet to balance it out. The fat filled my stomach and brought me back to a moderate level of intoxication. I hadn't eaten soba yet. Finally, I had hegi soba. I had kept some room in my stomach for this, so I ordered two servings. It had a greenish hue, a subtle aroma of dried seaweed, and a different deliciousness from countryside soba. I couldn't help but slurp it up. But two servings were too much for my stomach. I gave up on dessert and decided to finish the meal. Ah, sake and soba are truly delicious. Thank you for the feast.
