Intersection where Orange Street and Yanagi Koji in Asakusa meet. There used to be a cafe called "Bunshichi" where I visited a few times for young rakugo performances, but when I passed by the front of the store after a long time (my second time in Asakusa this year), it had changed to a "sushi restaurant". I had been drinking lightly elsewhere, but decided to stop by and grab some sushi to take home, so I jumped into the second-floor store. The interior of the store is basically the same as it was during the "Bunshichi" era. There is a small counter, but there are no customers sitting here. It has become a "serving counter". The interior of the store is only table seats, and at around 6:30 pm on a weekday, the occupancy rate is about 60%. I was also guided to a table seat. First, I ordered the obligatory draft beer. For snacks, I asked for "tsubu wasa" and kisu tempura. The draft beer was served quickly, and the "tsubu wasa" was also brought out promptly. It is a pleasing wasabi-flavored dish with chopped tsubu clam, but the wasabi is quite strong. Not only the spiciness, but the aroma is also quite strong. It goes well with alcohol. Then, a little late, the "kisu tempura" appeared. It is a tempura of a light white fish, soft and reminiscent of Edomae tempura. It is an essential item in Tokyo's Japanese restaurants. When my beer ran out, I switched to a highball. And then, nigiri sushi. Since it is a table seat, I write down the toppings on a sheet and hand it over to have them made. However, as someone who wants to order toppings face to face at the counter, it feels a bit lonely. First, as usual, I write down "kohada" twice, and also octopus and salmon roe once each. Naturally, the kohada, octopus, and salmon roe all come on the same plate. First, the kohada. It is quite delicious kohada. After all, it's not satisfying to eat sushi without it. And then the octopus. The cut is not particularly thick, but the piece is quite large. It is a delicious octopus with a unique texture. It has been a while since I had salmon roe. I actually prefer sujiko, but this salmon roe is elegant, with a slight lack of saltiness but a sweet taste. And then, more nigiri. I order squid and conger eel once each, and also add a tekka maki as my finale. They all come on the same plate again. The squid seems fresh, with no smell or off-flavors, and has a sweet taste. And then the conger eel. The slice seems a bit small, but the conger eel with a sweet and savory glaze is one of my favorite toppings. After eating all the nigiri, all the "shari" seems a bit small. For someone like me who doesn't have a big appetite, small shari is much appreciated. And the finale, the "tekka maki". The collaboration of the strong aroma of tuna and the seaweed with a hint of seaweed. It is the perfect roll for the end. It's a bit lonely not being at the counter, but the bright interior seems suitable for groups, couples, and social gatherings. If there is another opportunity, I would like to visit with someone next time.
