Arrived at 5:08 pm, the store opens at 5 pm, but already two groups have started. Upon entering the store, they asked if we had a reservation. It turned out to be a popular restaurant where reservations are essential. I thought it was not well-known as it is located across the main street from Ueno Station, but Bee-san, who is a local expert, had already visited and left a review. We were seated at the counter, and the person next to us also had a reservation. We started with draft beer, although it wasn't as cold as we had hoped. They offer a variety of skewers, including chicken (the restaurant's name is Tori Warai), so we ordered one skewer each of chicken heart (salt), pork cheek (spicy miso), and pork belly (sauce). It was nice that we could order just one skewer at a time. The grill seemed to be gas-powered. I initially thought the person grilling was the owner, but it turned out to be a female owner. It was impressive to see the owner and the senior staff patiently teaching the new part-time staff. We were served grated daikon radish as an appetizer, and we later found out that refills were available for an additional 200 yen (excluding tax). The spicy miso for the pork cheek was served on the side, and it was just enough without being overwhelming. The pork cheek had a good balance of chewiness and tenderness, and the sauce for the pork belly was a bit on the salty side, so a bit more sweetness would have been nice. The pork belly was easy to eat and delicious. The burnt parts were cut off with scissors, which was a nice touch to minimize bitterness. The chicken heart had the right amount of salt, and although it was well-cooked, it retained a moist texture typical of chicken hearts, which was delicious. We switched to a Hoppy white set and requested a refill with extra ice, which made it a bit stronger. When we asked for another refill with a stronger flavor to enjoy while sitting outside, they generously poured in so much shochu that there was almost no room for ice! This kind of service was delightful. We used this place for a pre-drinks gathering, so we didn't order any more. As it started to get crowded, we decided to leave. As we were leaving, they played "Suki" by Misato Watanabe, which brought back memories. I wondered who was in charge of the music selection, perhaps it was a radio station. Before we left, we listened to "Akai Sweet Pea" by Seiko Matsuda, and "Single Again" by Mariya Takeuchi. It was a cozy yakitori restaurant, and it seemed to be quite popular as more reservation customers started coming in after 6 pm. The restaurant is completely non-smoking, but they had ashtrays outside. Overall, it was a comfortable and pleasant place to enjoy yakitori.
