"Ban'ei Curry" in Shin-Tomi-cho, a calm area of Shinjuku, has a new look. This black curry restaurant, opened by a wholesaler on 8/8, offers the ultimate delicious curry called "Ban'ei Premium Curry". Developed by a comprehensive wholesaler in Osaka, "Ban'ei", this retort-style European black curry has become a popular dish with over 100,000 servings sold in about 4 years. The goal is to deliver this taste to the whole country, so the first store was opened in Tokyo as the information dissemination center. The black curry is made with carefully selected ingredients and spices from around the world, based on chicken soup, and slowly simmered with sweet sautéed onions, aromatic vegetables, and beef. The unique taste of black curry is characterized by the sweetness when you first taste it, followed by a lingering spiciness. The location is about a 3-minute walk from Shin-Tomi-cho Station on the Yurakucho Line. It has a chic appearance with a black exterior and a white noren curtain along Heisei Street. The interior is also unified with dark and chic colors, with a counter for 9 seats, 3 two-person tables, a strong air conditioning system, and TV sound as background music. The faint spice scent already wafting through the store stimulates the appetite. First, purchase a meal ticket at the ticket machine at the entrance and take a seat. The main menu consists of two items: - Ban'ei Premium Curry 1,000 yen - Ban'ei Premium Katsu Curry 1,300 yen Extra portions of roux or rice are available for an additional charge, and a half-size portion can also be ordered. Toppings include tonkatsu (300 yen), raw egg (150 yen), cheese (150 yen), and added pickles (100 yen). "Suguki" is one of the three major Kyoto pickles, made from pickled turnip greens, and is intentionally matched with ingredients that are not usually combined. There are two types of lassi, plain and mango, both priced at 400 yen each. The dishes we tried were as follows: - Ban'ei Premium Katsu Curry 1,300 yen - Mango Lassi *Service with flyer took 6 minutes to be served. A large plate with katsu and rice, accompanied by suguki, presented in a simple one-plate style. The roux is served separately, allowing you to pour it according to your preference. When you taste the roux, you can clearly taste the sweetness at first, followed by a spiciness that resonates from the back of your throat after a slight delay. When you bite into the beef, the umami spreads from the fibers, and the rounded flavor is firmly finished with the spiciness. The grainy rice enhances the sweetness and aroma of the roux. The intentionally lightly seasoned katsu, with its crispy coating and seeping oil blending with the curry, provides a pleasant bite. By the end of the meal, a gentle perspiration began to form, but the spiciness was not overpowering, leaving a refreshing impression. There is a curry restaurant called "Curry Meijin" nearby, but the taste here offers a different flavor experience. The exquisite spiciness that follows the sweetness, if you are curious, be sure to experience it for yourself.
