Bib Gourmand award-winning restaurant. Arrived a little after 9:45 am on a weekday, had to wait for about 20 minutes as there were 2 groups ahead. Ordered the following: - Shaved bonito rice bowl (1100 yen): The shaved bonito was different from the usual, with a sweet aroma and deep umami flavor, a hint of sweetness that paired perfectly with the rice. The furikake was rich and many people asked for seconds, which I understood why (about half the customers did). The miso soup was comforting with a gentle dashi and umami flavor. - Bonito belly tempura (660 yen): The slightly sweet sauce with a hint of sansho pepper's spicy kick complemented the chewy texture and umami of the bonito perfectly. - Fried eggplant in dashi broth (440 yen, limited): The strong dashi flavor paired with the perfect firmness of the vegetables, each with its own delicious flavor. It was a delightful experience and I would like to visit again. Thank you for the meal.

I went on a weekday (Monday) at 10 o'clock and unexpectedly had to wait for an hour. They have raised their prices starting from September 19, 2023. It feels a bit expensive. The bonito restaurant offers a meal for 1500 yen and an egg for 330 yen, which is delicious, but 1830 yen for a bonito and egg rice bowl is too high. The amount of rice is also small. Additionally, the atmosphere of the restaurant seems to be focused on creating a lively and energetic vibe, but it feels forced and not genuine. The soy sauce was tasty.

Visited around 12:30 on Saturday. There were about 3 groups ahead of me, and the wait time was a little over 5 minutes. It was hot outside and I was sweating a lot. I ordered bonito rice, fried chicken, and raw egg. The luxurious bonito flakes were truly impressive, making me grateful to be born Japanese. You can enjoy changing the flavor with salt, soy sauce, and bonito flakes. The more you savor it, the more the richness spreads in your mouth, and I felt very satisfied. The raw egg had a light yellow yolk and a gentle taste, as recommended in the instructions. I was very satisfied with the combination of salt. A highly satisfying TKG!!! The fried chicken had a slightly fishy taste at first, but adding the flakes as recommended enhanced the sweetness, making it a rich flavor, and the fishiness was no longer a concern. I ordered just these dishes and the total was 2,090 yen. It was quite a luxurious price for a simple meal, but it was a good experience. The smell of bonito flakes lingered in my mouth, making me feel happy. Thank you for the meal.

The restaurant specializes in bonito fish and is open from 9:00 am to around 1:00 pm, but their business hours are irregular so it's important to check their Instagram for updates. I visited at 10:15 am on a weekday and had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated as the restaurant was full. Even after being seated, it's better to wait until your order is called in order to maintain the order of service. I ordered the basic set meal with a side of tuna mayo and bonito karaage, which was served with plenty of freshly shaved bonito flakes on top of the rice. The food was served within about 15 minutes of ordering, and I tried eating in the recommended order. The rich flavor of the bonito flakes was delicious even without additional salt or soy sauce. The tuna mayo side dish added a nice touch, and although the bonito karaage seemed small for the price, it was packed with flavor and very satisfying. Other popular side dishes include egg and wasabi. About 30% of the customers were foreigners, possibly influenced by Instagram. Despite the wait, especially on weekdays, this is a rare find where you can enjoy a delicious and carefully prepared meal from the morning onwards!

Katsuo Shokudo 230901 Set meal 1100 yen + raw egg 330 yen Arrived at 8:45 am and had to wait for 3 people. Finally entered the restaurant around 9:20 am. It's surprising to see a line on a weekday morning. Most of the customers seem to be tourists, including many foreigners. The apprentice brother inside the restaurant is cheerful, energetic, and wonderful. The shop also sells large packs of bonito flakes and other goods. A video of bonito fishing is constantly playing. The restroom is labeled as "Room for bonito swimming." It's humorous and interesting. The love for bonito is amazing. About Bonito: Bonito flakes from Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Honkarebushi is made over 6 months. Supermarket bonito flakes take 2 weeks. Honkarebushi involves mold cultivation, which removes the moisture from the bonito flakes and enhances the umami flavor. Set meal 1100 yen: The bonito flakes have a fragrant and rich aroma, with a strong umami taste that melts in your mouth. Sprinkling salt enhances the flavor, and it also goes well with soy sauce. The bonito flakes' aroma contains over 400 different compounds. The rice is steamed in a feather pot, creating delicious steam. The egg is yellow because it feeds on rice. Bonito belly tempura 660 yen: It's a bit pricey, but several people ordered it. Originally, bonito belly, which is high in fat, is often discarded. However, they turn it into delicious tempura. It's coated with a sweet and savory sauce, and the batter has a soy sauce flavor that is crispy and fragrant. It's a bit salty but delicious. The crispy batter and juicy bonito balance well, with a tender texture, good fat content, excellent flakiness, and a rich aroma.

"Katsuo-chan" is now a top runner in the world of experiential dining, known for making numerous media appearances. Their restaurant focuses on bonito flakes like never before, offering dishes where bonito flakes are shaved by hand right in front of you and placed on clay pot rice. The menu also includes dishes with flavorful broth, regional specialties, and dishes where eggs and soy sauce are infused with the passion of "Katsuo-chan." Everything is delicious! What's more, "Katsuo-chan" himself passionately shares the stories behind each dish. This is a must-visit restaurant where the charismatic presence of "Katsuo-chan" seems to contribute to its success, although the satisfaction level may decrease when he is not around.

I arrived late for my first visit and reached the restaurant at 1:00 PM. There were 2 groups of 3 people each already seated. I was directed to a seat in front of a shaving table piled with dried bonito flakes. The restaurant had a counter in a U-shape with about 10 seats, and it was run by a beautiful female owner and 3 staff members. I ordered the following: - Katsuo Shokudo Gohan (shaved bonito flakes on rice) for 1100 yen - Miso soup with Nameko mushrooms - Raw egg for 330 yen The food was served in 5-6 minutes, and here are my thoughts on each dish: - The rice was cooked in a feather pot and topped generously with shaved bonito flakes. It was a bit messy as the flakes tended to spill over. - The miso soup had a strong dashi flavor, likely from the abundant use of bonito flakes. - The raw egg was a special type called "rice egg," which contains mixed rice in the feed for the hens. It is said to have increased levels of Vitamin E. Overall, the food was of high quality, closer to a traditional Japanese restaurant than a casual eatery. I also found an interesting item in the restaurant, a ranking list of bonito flakes production from the Edo period. It was surprising to see that some prefectures known for bonito fishing were not in the top rankings. One of my companions purchased a book written by the female owner and got her autograph.

Located a 7-8 minute walk from Shibuya Station towards Daikanyama, this restaurant serves bonito rice. I visited on a Sunday morning. The shop is currently irregularly closed, so it is necessary to check for updates on Instagram. They open in the morning and are quite popular, often selling out by lunchtime on holidays. I arrived around 11:30, by which time there were already 3-4 groups in line. I waited for about 15 minutes before getting a seat. By the time I left, they had already sold out. It's best to aim for around 11:30 on days off. The shop has only a counter in a U-shape with chairs that have no backrest, making the seating somewhat cramped. You can't relax. It's a quick turnover style with people waiting in line. In the summer, the air conditioning isn't very effective, so it can be warm inside. The menu offers a set of bonito flakes, miso soup, and rice for 1100 yen, with additional toppings available. I only added a raw egg as a topping. The bonito flakes were as expected, and would be good for a light breakfast if there wasn't a line.

Freshly shaved bonito rice bowl 1,100 yen Bonito sashimi 800 yen Raw egg 330 yen 【Recommended Points】 ▶ You can enjoy freshly shaved bonito right in front of you! ▷ A breakfast that warms your body and soul! ▷ The beautiful owner overflowing with love for bonito! They generously pile freshly shaved bonito on top of rice, creating a light and fluffy texture that melts in your mouth. It's a simple but incredibly delicious meal that truly makes you appreciate Japanese cuisine. The bonito sashimi, available only on days when they receive fresh ingredients, is also amazing! It's definitely worth lining up for. Make sure to arrive early to secure a front-row seat to watch the owner shaving the bonito. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

I went for breakfast on Sunday morning. There were few seats, so I waited for about an hour. The smell of bonito when I entered the shop on an empty stomach was irresistible. Just the fluffy bonito flakes alone were delicious. I added salt, soy sauce, tuna mayo, and miso halfway through. I could eat as much as I wanted. I wish I could go back as many times as I want if it only cost around 1000 yen to get in right away.

The current store is located in the middle between Shibuya Station and Daikanyama Station, about a 10-minute walk from Shibuya Station. The opening hours are from 9:00 am on weekdays (10:00 am on Saturdays) until sold out, but it is recommended to visit early for a "late breakfast" as it is likely to be sold out by the afternoon. The menu consists of "Katsuobushi Gohan" (1,100 yen) as the only option. They will grate fresh katsuobushi onto a bowl of rice right before serving, which is delightful. Today, I added "Katsuo Harakawa Karaage" (660 yen) and an egg. First, I tried it as is without adding anything. The sweetness and aroma of the katsuobushi that melts softly in the mouth are captivating. Next, I sprinkled some salt for a different taste. It was also delicious with a sweet and salty flavor. Lastly, I topped it with soy sauce and egg for a luxurious egg over rice. Many foreign visitors come to this place seeking traditional Japanese flavors, but I hope more Japanese people will rediscover the deliciousness of katsuobushi at this store. Please note that they only accept cash payments.

Today is Saturday! I had a hair appointment at a salon in Omotesando from 10 am, so I woke up early at around 5 am, took the train straight to Shibuya at 6:30 am, and spent an hour doing three sets of morning sauna at a sauna facility. It's a mysterious burst of energy so early in the morning! After getting ready, I walked to the restaurant. I arrived at 8:30 am, even though they opened at 9 am, and there was already one person in line. More customers started coming, so it was a good decision to line up early. By a little after 9 am, I was inside the restaurant. It was amazing! It was a bonito (fish) feast! They were shaving bonito flakes, which I haven't seen in a long time, bringing back childhood memories. The menu only had "Bonito Rice" and you could choose toppings. I went with extra rice and a raw egg! The staff were all lively and cheerful, especially the female owner who was very energetic! She shaved the bonito flakes right in front of us, and the dish arrived! Wow, it looks delicious! I started by eating it as is. Oh, this is so tasty! The aroma spreads gently and the bonito flakes spill over. Oh, what's this? It tastes amazing with salt sprinkled on it! It was my first time trying salt on bonito rice. The miso soup was comforting. I finished with a raw egg on top and ate it all up in no time! This kind of breakfast is the best! It's a bit pricey, but definitely worth it. Thank you for the meal! Ψ( 'ч' ☆)

A diner in Shibuya, located a little over a 10-minute walk from Shibuya Station. It was selected as one of the top 100 set meal restaurants in 2021. A rare shop specializing in bonito flakes for set meals. They open in the morning and close in the early afternoon. I always have trouble waking up early, so I hadn't been able to visit this place. But on this day, I managed to wake up on time and went there. I arrived around 11:30 am on a weekday, and the place was about 70% full. It was scorching hot that day, and the air conditioning inside the restaurant wasn't working well, so I ended up eating while sweating a lot (the air conditioner was on, but not very effective). I ordered the following items: - Bonito Flakes Rice (1100 yen) - Raw Egg (330 yen) Bonito flakes were shaved right in front of me and generously piled on top of the rice. It was a live performance that was quite enjoyable. First, I tried it as is. The bonito flakes were light and fluffy. Then, I added salt or soy sauce to change the flavor as I ate, and finished by pouring a raw egg from free-range chickens on top to make Tamago Kake Gohan (egg over rice). The pale yellow yolk is a distinctive feature. The shop is also famous on Instagram, and the cheerful and talkative female owner, Katsuo-chan, was there too! She mentioned that the menu will be revamped in the fall. Since the restaurant gets extremely hot in the summer, I plan to visit again when it's cooler. The menu is simple, so I wish the prices could be a bit more affordable. Overall, it was a delicious meal!

JR, less than 10 minutes' walk from Shibuya Station on the Tokyo Metro... Located in the area called Sakuragaoka, this restaurant pursues a strong love and dedication to bonito flakes. The reason I found out about this place was from a popular talent's YouTube show... A comedian known for being a meat lover and gourmet recommended a breakfast at this restaurant, so I had been curious about it for a while... After the Golden Week, I had been busy with work, but I finally managed to take a day off recently, so I decided to treat myself and explore a different area by going to Shibuya in the morning. Here is my review. On a certain weekday around 9 am... I arrived at Shibuya Station, a place I rarely visit... With my smartphone in hand, I headed towards this restaurant... The restaurant is located in the basement of a mixed-use building, so the entrance is quite hard to find, but I managed to arrive... Even at this time, the restaurant was full... There were several groups waiting, but I decided to wait as well... After about 10 minutes, I was able to enter. The interior of the restaurant consists of only a counter in the shape of a 'C'... It seems to be run by a cheerful landlady I saw on YouTube and two kitchen staff... [Order Details] - Shaved Bonito Flake Rice (1100 yen) *Comes with miso soup made from the best dashi - Pesticide-free Wasabi (220 yen) - Free-range egg (330 yen) The basic menu has only one choice... the dedicated bonito flake rice with miso soup set... Since I was there, I decided to add two recommended options... After ordering, the landlady skillfully shaved the bonito flakes in front of me... I watched with a critical eye, wondering if it was just for YouTube, but it was the real deal... She skillfully finished shaving them to a uniform thickness... It was served in about 5-6 minutes... As usual, I recommend checking the details in the photos, but first, the bonito flakes on top of the rice were dancing, with an incredible amount... The pink color was beautiful... The fragrance of freshly shaved bonito flakes was truly wonderful... Let's taste it right away... "Mmm... so rich..." The taste of the bonito flakes is irresistible... It has a deep flavor that makes you think it's the first time you've tasted the ingredient... First, I'll try it as it is without adding anything, but following the recommendation, adding a little rock salt enhances the sweetness of the bonito... This is really delicious... Adding soy sauce takes it to a whole new level... This is a different level of deliciousness... The overlapping richness of the fragrance spreads in the mouth, creating an incomparable flavor... I'll use the paid options to enjoy it all at once, but there's no reason why the spiciness and flavor of the wasabi wouldn't go well... Finally, I made it into a rice bowl with egg and finished it all at once... It was a breakfast that exceeded my expectations and left me completely satisfied. Well, it was my first visit, but I thought the menu, which pursues a dedication to ingredients, was very likable despite being simple. Some may feel that a set meal that costs over 1000 yen for bonito-flake rice alone is expensive, but considering the quality of the ingredients and work, as well as the location, it actually feels cost-effective. Above all, the landlady's sincere love for bonito was the only thing I felt, making it a wonderful set meal. Perhaps due to the location, there were also many foreign guests, and I also appreciated seeing them enjoy traditional Japanese breakfast. I hope you will take home the experience of delicious Japanese cuisine. You may not be able to come back easily due to the location, but I would like to find another opportunity to revisit... Thank you for the meal.

Visited around 9:30 am on a weekday, happy that it's not crowded at 9 am. It's like a popular 100-seat set meal restaurant with a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The utilization rate at the time of visit is 90%, so there may be a little wait even at this time. Katsuobushi rice and miso soup for 1,100 yen. The freshly shaved katsuobushi rice is enjoyable at this specialty shop, so the price is on the higher side. The aroma of the katsuobushi is nice, but since it's just miso soup and katsuobushi, I had it for breakfast and felt a bit unsatisfied. For those who don't mind the price, there are toppings like fried chicken and raw egg, so I recommend adding them. If you're curious, definitely give it a try.

I visited in the morning on a day off and waited in line for 30-40 minutes to get in. I saw a few foreign tourists, so it seems like this place is in guidebooks. The shop is small, and there is a lady who seems to be the owner shaving bonito flakes right in front of you while chatting with regular customers. Bonito flakes have always been a supporting role, but this shop made them the main attraction, which is quite impressive. The bonito flakes are fluffy and have a new texture. The fried bonito is flavorful and goes well with rice. The foreign customers seemed to really like it, as some even bought bonito flakes as souvenirs. I think it's worth trying at least once.

【Visit Information】 - Visit: 7/8 (Sun) 8:55 - Price: 1,500 yen - Order: - Food: - Katsuo Shokudo Rice 1,100 yen x 2 - Extra Large Portion 150 yen x 1 - Pesticide-Free Wasabi 220 yen - Katsuobushi Miso 220 yen - Dashi Garlic Tuna Mayo 220 yen 【Food】 Katsuobushi is so delicious, I couldn't help but think. The gentle flavor that seeps into my empty stomach in the morning, along with a hint of saltiness, perfectly complements the white rice. 【Service】 The female owner entertains us with various stories about katsuobushi. 【Atmosphere & Customer Base】 Young female groups, families, tourists, foreigners, etc. Some solo diners who seem like food enthusiasts can also be seen. 【Crowdedness】 There were already over 20 people waiting when we arrived. They take their time to prepare each dish, so the turnover rate is relaxed. If you arrive around 10:00, consider waiting from around 8:30 to aim for the first round.

I lined up at 8:00 on Saturday and was the first to enter, allowing me to be seated at 9:00. I left at 9:15 after enjoying a meal of bonito rice and miso soup for 1100 yen, along with an egg for 330 yen. The texture of the bonito was different from what I usually have, but it was delicious. I recommend adding the egg at the end to fully savor the bonito flavor. Personally, I was satisfied with the meal, but I understand that some may not feel it is worth the wait or the price.

I felt like doing some morning activities, so I found this place on Instagram and decided to visit. Date: 7/2 (Sun) 9:20 arrival Wait time: 1 hour 45 minutes Menu: Katsuobushi set meal for 1100 yen and an egg If you want to go, you should line up before the store opens. I planned to go right when they opened, but I underestimated and ended up being very late, so I had to wait a long time. When I arrived, there were already around 20-30 people waiting. The restaurant only has 11 seats, and the pace is not very fast, so you need to be prepared. If you line up in the morning, you can endure it because there is shade from the building. It's probably over by noon. The interior of the restaurant is extremely hot, especially near the stove. As for the taste, I ordered the simple set meal and an egg. It was delicious even when eaten without anything added. But when I added salt and soy sauce, it became irresistibly delicious. The bonito flakes were the best. I had another serving of rice and added a raw egg, which was the best. Personally, I think it's better to have an extra serving of rice with an egg than to just have one full bowl. The raw egg with soy sauce and rice is the best. Overall, the food was delicious, but I don't think I'll visit again. It's listed in the Michelin Guide, so there were many foreigners. The open kitchen concept also seemed to cater to foreigners. The taste was good, but not mind-blowing, just delicious. I felt like I could probably recreate it at home with my palate. But it's delicious, so if you want to go, why not give it a try?

I asked for recommendations from gourmet people who like light lunches. This place is quite popular and there is usually a line, but I was lucky to go in without waiting. There are many foreign customers as well. It's a shop specializing in bonito flakes, so the menu is very simple! I ordered freshly shaved bonito flakes over rice (comes with miso soup) for ¥1,100. I also got eggs from free-range chickens for ¥330. They shave the bonito flakes right in front of you and put the fluffy flakes on the rice. The flavor is strong with the taste of bonito, and you can enjoy it as it is, with salt, with soy sauce, or with eggs. When considering cost performance, I feel it's not bad at all. Thank you for the meal.
