During the Bon holiday period, I visited on a Friday at 4:30 pm. It is located a 2-3 minute walk from Azabu-Juban Station, near that famous taiyaki shop. This is the main store of a confectionery store that has about 20 branches mainly in department stores and airports. Established in 2009, it is relatively new as a traditional Japanese sweets shop. The small shop displays about 50 flavors of karinto. There are various assortments and gift wrapping options available, so the variety is rich. There were about 5 customers before me, so it wasn't crowded, but it felt like it would be full with a few more people. My goal was not karinto, but the "Roasted Black Honey Karinto Manju". I like the karinto manju from Kanda Daruma in Kanda Ogawamachi, so whenever I have the chance to go near Kanda Ogawamachi, I always buy it. Here, they also have karinto manju, so I came to try it. There seems to be a branch that sells freshly fried ones from one piece, but here, they only sell boxes of 6 or 10 pieces that are pre-made. It was a bit disappointing because there seemed to be a space for frying. By the way, they do not have online shopping. The expiration date was 8 days, so that might be the reason. I bought the "Roasted Black Honey Karinto Manju (6 pieces)" for 864 yen. The description says that it looks like karinto, but has a moist and soft texture like manju. However, the carefully burnt black honey aroma is definitely like karinto. Black honey is kneaded, red bean paste is put inside, and it is deep-fried to a crispy texture. It has a bittersweet taste and a delicious addictive flavor. It has a moist and soft texture, a fragrant black honey aroma, and plenty of red bean paste inside. I was expecting a crispy texture like karinto around, but it was not there. As a black sugar manju, it is very delicious. If they had freshly fried ones, it might have been closer to the crispy texture I expected. By the way, I tried cutting it in half and toasting it in a toaster for about 2 minutes. It became slightly crispy, but ended up a bit burnt and bitter, so it didn't go well.
