I visited with the intention of drinking casually. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is cluttered, but if you like the unpretentious feel, then it's good. The ingredients grilled on the charcoal grill are reasonably priced and perfect for drinking. I ordered sushi as a finale, and it was simply delicious.

Tonight, I had a drinking party in Ueno! I took my subordinates and for the second round, we went to a sushi restaurant (^O^) When I live in Tokyo, for some reason, I always feel like going to a sushi restaurant in Ueno ♡ Tonight, the three of us had a second round of drinks! A sushi set with sea urchin and salmon roe for only 1,500 yen ( ◠‿◠ ) Such great value for money! We had a good time with highballs and then ordered the "Gorgeous" sushi set for the finale. Tonight, the sushi chef was full of energy (laughs) I like the cozy atmosphere of this Edo-style sushi restaurant located in a prime location in front of Ueno station. Thank you for always providing me with comfort. The sea urchin was delicious (╹◡╹) ===========

I visited around 4:30 PM on a weekday. I was seated at the counter and placed my order. The menu prices were a bit high for a tourist area, but the daily specials on the whiteboard were more reasonable. Many regular customers were ordering from there. You can grill both meat and fish on a shichirin grill. They also had traditional charcoal grills. The place had an old-fashioned izakaya feel and was not particularly clean, but I liked it. The elderly man, who was referred to as the owner, was working hard to serve customers. Smoking is allowed inside. I will definitely visit again when I'm in Ueno. Thank you for the meal! (^o^)

I heard there was a 500 yen all-you-can-drink deal and decided to check it out. Unfortunately, it was either no longer available or I misunderstood. The seafood was above average in quality overall, but it doesn't seem like a particularly cheap place in terms of pricing. As someone from Aomori, I was happy to see they had "joppa-ri" (a type of local cuisine), but at 880 yen, it's not exactly cheap. It seems like it's more geared towards people who are not familiar with "joppa-ri". Overall, it's a satisfying place to dine.

I arrived at the restaurant at 15:00. It has a small L-shaped counter with 7 seats. I ordered the chef's choice of 10 pieces of sushi and a draft beer for 1200 yen (tax included). The sushi was delicious, at a level somewhere between 100 yen sushi and Sushizanmai. The service was quick, with dishes arriving in about 5-6 minutes after ordering. I stayed for about 20 minutes, so in terms of cost performance, it was excellent. However, it may not be suitable for dates or business meals.

The restaurant opened at 12:00 PM and within 15 minutes it was packed. On weekdays, they offer all-you-can-drink for 500 yen for 90 minutes, which is great value. Today, I had half a grilled Atka mackerel, two types of sashimi, grilled eel, and buttered enoki mushrooms. It's recommended because you get to grill it yourself, making it even more delicious.

One-hour all-you-can-drink for 500 yen at a restaurant where you can grill fish and meat on a shichirin. The food is delicious but so cheap that it makes you wonder haha. The condition for the all-you-can-drink is that each person must order at least one item. This time, I chose half a hokke for 390 yen and two squid skewers for 270 yen. As you can see in the photos, it's super delicious!!! They also have sushi and incredibly cheap lunch options. It's a great restaurant where smoking is allowed at the tables.

I entered a chain izakaya without doing any research, and all seats were smoking allowed. I ordered bean sprout namul for 300 yen, fresh octopus sashimi for 500 yen, fresh firefly squid sashimi for 480 yen, and a Kirin Classic Lager medium bottle for 560 yen. There was a seating charge of 300 yen. The business hours are from 11:30 to 21:00, and there are no regular holidays. They only accept cash.

After enjoying cherry blossom viewing, we stopped by for an early evening drink at this place for the first time. We thought it was a seafood izakaya, but they also had charcoal-grilled meat. The food and drinks we ordered were: - Lemon sour (520 yen) - Draft beer (450 yen) - Otoshi (appetizer) x2 (300 yen each) - Half a grilled saury fish (390 yen) - Pork cheek (270 yen) - Bonito sashimi (390 yen) - Grilled pork ear with ponzu sauce (600 yen) - Highball (400 yen) - Tomato sour (430 yen) - Green tea highball (420 yen) - Sake (300 yen for 1 cup) - Beef tongue (270 yen) - Grilled eel and cucumber (650 yen) Both the seafood and meat were fresh and delicious overall. It was a unique experience to grill organ meats like pork cheek on charcoal by ourselves. The grilled eel and cucumber dish was unexpected as we thought it would be a roll, but it turned out to be eel and cucumber side by side. However, the taste was still good.

I discovered a shop in the back alleys near Ueno and Okachimachi. I decided to enter after seeing a sign advertising a set of 9 pieces of sushi with a draft beer for 1000 yen. The shop had only a counter with a capacity of about 6 people. There was one customer before me, so it was not crowded. I was served a draft beer first, as there was only one staff member working. The sushi chef then started making sushi, using tuna, squid, engawa, scallop, mackerel, shrimp, fatty tuna, salmon, and tamagoyaki. The sushi pieces were thick and generously sized, and the quality was excellent. The miso soup with seaweed also had a nice ocean flavor. I felt that getting all of this with a draft beer for 1000 yen was a great deal. I left the shop feeling satisfied and happy with the delicious meal.

Perhaps, inspired by the "Herring Palace"... the addition of "Banya" to the name of this restaurant, with "Yochi" following it, was it chosen based on the meaning of "Herring Palace"? I have visited this place a few times but never noticed the "Banya" in the name. The song "Soran Bushi" about herring fishing is said to be a folk song originating from Yochi Town. Is the owner of the restaurant from Yochi? As someone living in Yokohama, I have visited Yochi four times. I used to be able to tour the cooperage workshop and watch the coopers burn the barrels at the Nikka Yochi Distillery. The area around the distillery didn't have a typical fishing port atmosphere, so I never really paid attention to herring. I have never been to the fishing port area, so I don't know if there is a Herring Palace there, but I would like to visit if I have the chance. Now, back to the topic of Ueno's Yochi... Attracted by the "500 yen all-you-can-drink" offer, Ueno and Okachimachi areas are bustling with bars even on weekdays. I'm not a big fan of underpass motsuyaki restaurants, so I prefer coming here. This time, they offered a one-hour all-you-can-drink deal for 500 yen, so we decided to give it a try. We started with draft beer, followed by sours or chu-hi, then highball... We are not the type to obsess over all-you-can-drink deals, but the time limit made us drink quickly! (They might have given us a free drink for overtime?) The appetizers like "Assorted Sashimi," "Thick Rolled Omelette," "Simmered Motsu," "Fried Oysters," and "Potato Fries" were all delicious! It seems like they put a lot of effort into seafood dishes. While their specialty is charcoal grilling, you can also enjoy a casual izakaya experience here. We drank and ate quickly in a short amount of time. Now, shall we change the scenery to sober up a bit?

On October 4, 2021, I met with a friend I have known for 24 years in Ueno, and we visited a restaurant together for the first time. The table was set up with a charcoal grill, where we could cook our own food. We started the evening with a toast of Kirin Ichiban beer. We grilled turban shell, large shrimp, scallops, sandfish, and dried saury on the charcoal grill, and enjoyed sashimi of yellowfin tuna, red snapper, and amberjack with our drinks. The vinegared miso sauce on the veranda added a crunchy texture to the meal. We switched to Hoppy halfway through and enjoyed spaghetti Napolitan, sandfish, and taro grilled on the charcoal grill. Despite the slight smell of smoke on our clothes, it was a fun and enjoyable feast.

Today, I went to Ueno. I visited a place I've been curious about, Nanairohamayaki and Sushi Banya Yosai. Cheers with a shochu highball. I thought the first drink was just right, but as I continued, I found myself ordering stronger drinks from the second one onwards. There are plenty of dishes to choose from, which got me excited. I had sea cucumber vinegar, bakudan (spicy cod roe), tsubugai chanja (sea snail), and horse sashimi. Each person gets one bakudan, and it was very delicious. It seems that there is a 1-hour all-you-can-drink option for 500 yen if you enter before 8 p.m. Next time, I'll come earlier. Thank you for the meal. I will visit again.

Today, I was only allowed to eat during the day, so I went around eating and drinking, and even though it's still late afternoon, I decided to finish with some sushi. The service set with sushi and a draft beer was 1,200 yen. I didn't have high expectations for the place, but I was a bit drunk so I decided to give it a try! There was only one regular customer there before me. I planned to just have a quick bite of sushi and leave. I asked the chef for the service set. The chef, who didn't say much, replied with a simple "okay." The draft beer arrived promptly and tasted fresh! I didn't have to wait long for my 10-piece sushi set (regular price 1,300 yen, discounted to 980 yen). The sushi was as shown in the photos and had a nice traditional Edo-style feel to it. With the beer finished and only spending 1,200 yen, I decided to order a green tea highball, and ended up having a fun time chatting with the chef and the regular customer. The chef was not very talkative, maybe due to the mask affecting his speech, but he did his best to make delicious sushi. Thank you for the meal.

Sister store of the rotating sushi chain "Oedo"? I found out later, but it seems so when I checked the website. The "Oedo" chain had many locations in the local area of Ikebukuro, so it was familiar. In the past, they also had a branch in Tobu's restaurant district. However, there seems to be a tendency for not so good compatibility. One reason might be freshness. In a way, it feels like they mainly focus on aged rice for traditional Edo-style sushi, which is the opposite of freshness. I'm not trying to define the traditional sushi, just giving my impression. But this time, I felt that impression again. "Glamour (lunch)" (1,300 yen) - As shown in the photo. Those who have gone fishing and immediately prepared and eaten the fish will understand. Depending on the way it's prepared and the type of fish, the sweetness and umami of the fish after death and aging are not as strong when freshly caught. If you want to enjoy the texture and freshness itself, it's good, but the true umami of the fish is related to the time elapsed after death and the curve of amino acid amplification, so there is a perfect timing that is not about personal preferences. This applies not only to fish but also to animal meat and even plants and fruits. However, people who are strongly aware of this kind of thing are few, I think. I'm the same. However, I feel most strongly about it when I feel like I've missed that "season." This "nigiri" at this restaurant. Except for sweet shrimp and egg, everything felt like it had been aged too much. It felt like it was past the "season" and more than that. I can't write about it. I didn't feel like it was way past, so I rated it positively. Everyone has their own preferences. I was lured in by the 500 yen per hour all-you-can-drink deal. It was quite busy and the service seemed overwhelmed, so the drinks weren't coming around much. The smoke from the grill without a duct was a bit bothersome. The sushi seemed a bit pricey, but that's expected at an izakaya. Other dishes were cheap and delicious. I was happy that the drinks were affordable. The location is good too, so I would like to go back again.

On February 13th, I took a day off and went to Ueno by myself after finishing up some work. The place I originally planned to visit was full, and Ueno was bustling with young couples and groups, making it not ideal for solo drinking. So, I found a lively little restaurant down a side street near Ueno Park. I arrived at the restaurant at 3:50 PM. There were no other solo customers, just a few young groups at the back of the restaurant. I was seated at the counter facing the street, where I could see the kitchen and the staff working. I ordered a Kirin Lager, horse mackerel sashimi, and oyster fry. The total came to 1,570 yen. The horse mackerel sashimi was average, but the frozen green onions on top were a bit disappointing. The oyster fry came with four small oysters, lettuce, and mini tomatoes, and it was okay, although the flavor was a bit weak. I was pleasantly surprised when the bill came out to be a bit lower than I expected, probably because they didn't charge for the appetizer and included tax in the prices. Starting in April, displaying prices with tax included will be mandatory for all businesses, which I welcome as someone who enjoys affordable dining. I debated whether to have another drink but decided to save it for next time. It was a nice evening at Ueno station. On a side note, with the aging population and declining birth rates, there is a growing trend of seniors dining out alone. They may not just enjoy drinking, but also appreciate the atmosphere of local izakayas and observing people's expressions, making the solo drinking experience more enjoyable. Of course, considering customer spending and time spent at the restaurant is necessary.

After finishing work, I felt like having some sushi as a snack, but didn't have much money. I was drawn to a casual-looking restaurant and walked in. The small counter had 6 seats with simple pipe chairs, making me feel comfortable. The menu on the wall was like a basic conveyor belt sushi place, maybe even cheaper. I thought, "At this price, eating at the counter is perfect," and quickly placed my order. The tuna had a decent flavor, the shrimp seemed to be processed, and the gizzard shad was as expected. However, the surprise was the shellfish. The scallop was fresh and sweet, probably domestic, and the ark shell was likely prepared from a live shellfish, with a beautifully curled body that was fresh and delicious. The whelk was not the usual Russian whelk product found in conveyor belt sushi places, but likely prepared from a live shellfish. It may have been a B whelk species, but getting proper whelk at this price was unexpected. The squid was skinless and the sweet shrimp, probably from Russia, had a natural sweetness that was rich and delicious. There were signs of conscientious attention to detail throughout, making this sushi restaurant quite rare and special.

Due to the impact of the coronavirus, there are restrictions on the operating hours of nighttime izakayas. However, I believe there is something more important that should be taken into consideration. In Ueno, there are many places where you can drink during the day, but if you take a look at the storefronts, it is clear that the sense of crisis is lacking... it is crowded, crowded, crowded. Drinking and dining in such crowded conditions is extremely dangerous, needless to say. Instead of limiting the drinking hours, I personally think we should restrict the "way of drinking" in such environments. Putting that aside, I visited this place which is safe from such dangerous environments and where you can drink from daytime. I had been curious about the fish and sake menu displayed on the signboard for a while, and finally made my first visit. The highlight here is grilling on the table, but on this day, I only ordered a sashimi platter. The volume of sashimi was exceptionally generous, so I couldn't even make it to the grilling, to be honest. The freshness and volume of the sashimi platter were outstanding. For this price and quality, it is more than enough. However, what personally doesn't sit well with me is that the chef smokes cigarettes at the cutting board. Without this, it would be a recommended restaurant.
