Nakano Broadway, famous as an otaku building centered around Mandarake, now has a vibe that could be described as a second-hand watch store building. The presence of Jack Road on the 3rd floor played a big role, connecting JR Nakano Station and Broadway through the arcade street Nakano Sun Mall. However, the underground 1st floor still retains a Showa era atmosphere. The Seiyu that I used to go shopping with my mother when I was a child is still there. There used to be an aqua shop where my father occasionally bought goldfish at the entrance of Seiyu. The underground of Broadway has many shops with a nostalgic scent, such as Daily Chico with 8-tier soft serve ice cream and Crepe & Cafe Challenger, which always has a "time sale" going on. Nakamura Suisan is also a famous shop on the underground 1st floor. There is also a fish shop called Katsuta Shoten where the staff's calls can be heard echoing. Nakamura Suisan is a classic fish shop in the center. Shops like this are mostly being phased out by supermarkets on the street, making them a rare find. They close at 7 pm, so after 6 pm, discounted items are a good deal. It gets quite crowded. Payment is in cash. PayPay is not accepted as of June 2023. You need to move quickly at the register area, or you'll be in the way, so it can be a bit nerve-wracking. After purchase, ice is packed for free in place of ice packs. You can buy donburi, or if saku (freshness) is good, you can buy saku of red snapper or bonito to make carpaccio or marinate in vinegar. It's interesting to decide your evening recipe based on the affordable products at that time. There are always quite a few eels displayed, but I haven't tried them yet.

This is my first time posting a review, but I have a favorite that I have eaten many times. This time, it's Nakamura Suisan Nakano store in Nakano Broadway underground. Various fresh fish and seafood are lined up, and it always excites me just to look at them.
- Unadon (eel rice bowl) 854 yen
It is displayed in a corner of the refrigerated showcase. It has recently increased in price a bit, but it's still cute. I warm it up in the microwave and enjoy it with cold grated daikon radish. When I remove the lid, a splendid eel appears. It's about two-thirds of the usual size. It comes with tamagoyaki (rolled omelette), pickles, eel sauce, and a bag of sansho pepper. I immediately tried it. The eel is very tender, almost melting in the mouth. The quality is unbelievably high for this price. There is also kinshi tamago (shredded omelette) underneath, which is nice. The combination with cold grated daikon radish is excellent. This is the greatest joy in life. I usually use cold water as a chaser for the daikon radish, but on this day, I paired it with non-alcoholic Budweiser. I want to continue buying this unadon in the future. Ah, it was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Nakamura Suisan is a fish market located on the B1 floor of Nakano Broadway. The area is filled with delicious eateries such as Udon restaurant Oodomon, curry spot Rainbow Spice Cafe Chai Store, fish shop Katsuta Shoten, soft serve ice cream shop Daily Chico, and handmade dim sum shop Mata Ashita. Among these options, Nakamura Suisan stood out for its affordable prices and wide variety of fish cuts, sashimi, and sushi. I was surprised by how cheap the prices were, and ended up buying some clam sashimi for 431 yen and engawa (fluke fin) sashimi for 530 yen. Both dishes were quite generous in portion size, with the clam sashimi having a nice crunch and the engawa being very juicy. The flavors were delicious, and I was happy with my purchase. I would love to visit again in the future.

Cheap, really cheap. Had a satisfying bowl of eel rice. The menu seems to vary by day and time. There were more sushi options in the afternoon. Also bought some oysters and whitebait.

There is a shop on the B1 floor of Broadway that specializes in fish. They have a variety of fish fillets and sashimi available, making it a better option for buying fish compared to the supermarket on the same floor. Next to the fish shop, there is a sushi counter where you can find affordable rice bowls for less than a coin. For around ¥1000, you can get a pack with high-quality tuna belly and other delicious options, making it a good value. I recommend buying a few packs to share with your family. The sushi here is thick and substantial, unlike the unreliable supermarket sushi. In addition to the fish shop, there is also a shop selling bento boxes from a butcher, as well as delicious dumplings and gyoza. It's a fun place to buy bento boxes and side dishes.

After a few years, I went back to the underground of Broadway. I used to come here often, but Broadway has turned into an otaku building, so I had been avoiding it. Oh, the atmosphere underground hasn't changed at all. The smell of the black market with shops like Yaoya, Sakanaya, Nikuya, and Sobaya is enjoyable. I couldn't help but peek into Sakanaya "Nakamura Suisan" and my eyes were drawn to the tuna collar meat bowl for 626 yen. I already had lunch, but the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, so I decided to buy it along with a canned beer. The vinyl bag handed to me was heavy. It's a cherry blossom viewing sake at the former police academy site. I take a big bite of the tuna collar meat bowl. The negitoro is moist, but the collar meat has a nice texture. The scallions and soy sauce-marinated collar meat skimi, with the vinegar rice and beer, are a great combination. The richness of the lean meat and the right amount of fat are just perfect, my favorite. I finished my second lunch of the day and the 500ml beer, feeling very satisfied. Thank you for the meal.

Located on the basement floor of Nakano Broadway, this shop offers takeout sushi. It's more like a fish market selling pre-packaged sushi rather than a traditional sushi shop. The sushi is made using an automatic rice press machine, with fish slices placed on top. The taste matches the appearance and price. The shop also offers a sushi buffet, where you can choose your favorite sushi pieces and pack them yourself. Each sushi piece is individually wrapped, ensuring hygiene. Prices range from 50 yen for tuna, squid, shrimp, and gizzard shad, to 100 yen for amberjack, sea urchin, salmon roe, and ark shell. While the prices may not be significantly cheaper than a conveyor belt sushi restaurant with a 100 yen per plate deal, you can take advantage of discounts near closing time. However, during these times, the staff pre-pack several pieces together and apply the discount sticker, limiting your ability to choose your favorites. It can be a bit tricky to make the most of the discounts.

I go to the underground floor of Broadway. The area near Fureai Road is also quite deep, but this floor is also quite deep. It somehow makes me think that this is what the black market was like after the war. On the east side of this shop, they sell fish packed in packs, and on the west side across the aisle, they sell sushi. I have never bought sushi, but I have bought fish several times. Anyway, the variety is rich, and the salmon slices are quite thick and cheap. There is a Seiyu supermarket nearby, but of course, it's cheaper than Seiyu. Otherwise, they wouldn't be able to survive. Nowadays, fish shops are disappearing from various shopping streets. In the past, butchers, fishmongers, and greengrocers were indispensable in shopping streets, but while there are still butchers and greengrocers, fishmongers are disappearing one after another. Perhaps they are losing to competition from large supermarkets. Sometimes when I walk through a shopping street in an unfamiliar town and see a fishmonger, for some reason, I feel relieved. I wonder if this shop also buys fish at a higher wholesale price than Seiyu and sells them at a lower price...?

Located in the basement of Nakano Broadway, this fish market is unassuming and trustworthy. It may not be fancy, but it's clean and reliable. I visited during a busy time with discounts, but the wait was worth it. I was able to get delicious sashimi at a good price, including white fish, scallops, and a mixed plate. We were having a home party nearby and wanted tasty snacks, so it was a perfect find. I would be happy if there was a similar shop nearby!

I looked for dinner at Nakano Broadway underground. I was thinking of buying sashimi for drinking in the evening, but I couldn't find anything good, so I went to Nakamura Suisan where they always have sushi and eel. 16 pieces for 780 yen! The taste is definitely better than supermarkets or convenience stores in the same price range. I happily headed home and enjoyed it with shochu♪ Thank you for the meal!

Nakamura Suisan at Nakano Broadway is a place I often visit because it's affordable. Today, I bought a sashimi platter (bonito, horse mackerel, cured mackerel) for 627 yen including tax, and a tekka maki for 322 yen including tax. The cured mackerel could have been a bit fresher in color, but overall it was good. I also bought octopus at Katsuta Shoten in the same building, and it was delicious too. They must be competing with each other.

Today, I worked remotely in the morning and took the afternoon off. I was thinking about what to have for dinner, and decided to have sashimi at home while enjoying a leisurely drink. There is a supermarket near my house, but their sashimi selection is not the best in terms of cost performance, so I took a walk to Nakano and went to this place in the basement of Broadway. I have been here a few times before, and they offer a variety of dishes including seafood bowls, eel, various sashimi, and snacks like spicy cod roe and salmon roe. And it's cheaper than the supermarket! I wanted to eat a lot of sashimi, so in addition to a sashimi platter, I also bought horse mackerel and spicy scallops. There are other fish shops in Broadway, but this one is not cluttered and easy to shop at. I will definitely come back.

In the basement of Nakano Broadway, there is a fishmonger in the specialty store area. In addition to fresh fish, they also sell seafood bowls and sushi for takeout. I had a meeting at an acquaintance's house in Nakano and after finishing our work discussion, they offered to treat us to lunch. They run a business with their spouse, so they usually buy food nearby or order delivery for lunch. On this day, we had a seafood bowl from a fish store in the Broadway basement. The seafood bowl was a mix of diced tuna, squid, tamago, cucumber, steamed shrimp, and other colorful ingredients. We drizzled the accompanying soy sauce over it and enjoyed it heartily. It had chopped shellfish that looked like minced clams but turned out to be boiled small shrimp, and the sushi rice was slightly firm, but overall it was a satisfying meal. We chatted about trivial things while finishing our meal neatly. Sometimes, it's nice to have a meal like this.

At Nakano Broadway, the underground area gets crowded in the evening as people come to buy ingredients for dinner. Sushi prices drop as the evening goes on. This time, I tried the discounted "Gomoku Chirashi." It's a simple vinegar rice mixed with various ingredients. Being from a fish market, the ikura (salmon roe) and shrimp are delicious. Surprisingly, there is a generous amount of rice, so it's quite satisfying. The shiitake mushrooms are flavorful and tender.
