タケマシュラン
Personally, when it comes to Hakata cuisine in the Jyuban area, I had already decided on "Onimaru" as my go-to spot. However, I decided to try something different and went to "Bari Hakata" this time. It is located on the 2nd floor of the same building as "Kushiemon" and is in the same group as "Chikappa Hakata". The interior felt a bit cramped compared to "Chikappa Hakata". The counter seating was quite tight, and you might end up getting elbowed by the person next to you. Despite the small space, the restaurant was fully packed, and walk-in customers had to turn around and head back home. Make sure to make a reservation before visiting.
A draft beer costs 700 yen, which may be the standard price in Jyuban, but considering the atmosphere of this place, I wish they could lower it by 100 yen. The vinegar motsu (offal) dish had about 1.5 times more volume compared to what I had at "Chikappa Hakata". The motsu was finely chopped, more like flakes than meat. The pork-wrapped skewers were delicious, with a concentrated flavor of green onions and a soft texture of okra. They also cut the skewers into smaller pieces for easy sharing.
The fried chicken thighs were simply amazing. The thick, juicy chicken meat was crispy on the outside, with a spicy kick. It was the best dish of the day. Sake prices range from 900 yen per serving, which seems reasonable. Of course, given the culture of shochu in Hakata, focusing on that route may be the norm.
The motsu nabe (offal hot pot) was different from what I expected, as I imagined a rich, thick soup. Authentic Hakata motsu nabe apparently has a clear, light broth. It was not bad, but it lacked a punch and didn't fully capture the fatty flavor of the motsu. The champon tamago (egg) dish cost 500 yen, which felt a bit overpriced for the plain, soft noodles. However, the same price for zosui (rice porridge) made it seem like carbohydrates are not a cost-effective option for dining at this restaurant.
With moderate eating and drinking, the cost per person was around 6,000 yen. The individual dishes were decent, especially the fried chicken, but in the end, it felt a bit pricey. Nevertheless, it is a popular spot, so maybe it's just my personal taste that's off.
