A row of eateries under the guard between Ueno and Okachimachi. Among them is a skewered tempura restaurant run by "Juraku," which could be called the "mainstay of Ueno." Despite frequently passing by, I never noticed this place before. Did it recently open? When I saw the sign for "draft beer for 290 yen on weekdays," I decided to check it out. I sat at the counter near the entrance and started with the draft beer. For a snack, I ordered "cabbage with salted malted rice" and skewers of asparagus and pork-wrapped red ginger. The asparagus was perfectly crispy with a hint of sweetness, while the pork-wrapped red ginger had a delicious flavor that made me want more. After finishing my beer, I ordered another one and tried the "vinegared small horse mackerel" as a snack. The slight acidity and sweetness of the mackerel, which you can eat whole, paired well with the beer. Although the restaurant is known for skewered tempura, they offer a variety of great options for drinks and snacks. It's a convenient and reliable place to visit.

I had the Numbing Pork Bowl for lunch in Ueno, costing 880 yen. The temperature was 34℃, another hot day. Let's recharge with a pork bowl in this scorching summer! I entered the restaurant with a colleague at 11:47, no customers before us, and 4 customers came in after. We ordered the Numbing Pork Bowl. The interior wasn't very cool, so the cold water was refreshing. The dish arrived in about 7 minutes. The presentation was good, but the pork bowl's appearance was disappointing. I tried the pork, which had a spicy kick from the Sichuan pepper. The meat was a bit tough, maybe overcooked. Disappointing. The rice was also hard, almost like leftover from yesterday. Not my preference, disappointing. The sauce on the pork was quite sweet. The sweetness combined with the hard rice made me lose interest and leave some unfinished. Unfortunately, it didn't suit my taste. Thank you for the meal. Visit on August 2, 2023, for lunch. Rating: 3.29

The kushikatsu starts from 100 yen, which feels cheap, but the 200 yen options are not very cost-effective. Personally, I liked the karashi-yaki, a specialty of Higashijujo. It has a flavor that makes you want to eat rice, but rice is not included in the menu. Overall, it is an average restaurant.

Kushiage Juraku Ueno branch. When wandering around Ameyoko, it really feels like I'm back in Tokyo. The spicy pork dish was delicious. It had a lot of sansho pepper which made it tasty! The kushiage was delicious. The pickled ginger was delicious. The quail was delicious. The eggplant was delicious. Overall, the quality was quite high.

The day before yesterday, I went to Jyuraku in Ueno for drinks. I had a chef's choice assortment of 10 fried skewers, including onion, quail, shishito peppers, eggplant, and more. There was even a chicken tulip when viewed from the back, but it's not included in the 10-piece assortment. Each tulip costs 150 yen, which is a bit pricey. The spicy pork bowl was too much for me, so I opted for the spicy pork plate as a snack. It was delicious with a strong flavor of sansho pepper. The ham cutlet is a classic and the salted cabbage was also tasty. I had a great time with Hoppy!

I ordered a few pieces of tempura and dotenabe. When I visited last time, I had ordered motsunabe, but it lacked punch. Dotenabe is good though. I will definitely order it again next time. The restaurant is not too crowded, so it's easy to get in. It might be a good addition to the bar-hopping route.

At the end of Ameyoko or at the entrance of Ameyoko, there is a skewered tempura restaurant, but the recommended dish is probably the "numbing pork". I also love it!! In fact, I love it more than the skewered tempura. This place is known for its numbing pork! (laughs) Numbing pork plate for ¥748. Order the numbing pork separately, extra numbing, without rice. Even though you order, it's through a QR code, so there are no order mistakes, which is great! Here it comes! The pork belly, cooked to a crisp, covered in a sweet and spicy sauce, is served! Of course, it's delicious on its own. It makes the blood of the gluttons boil. Some people don't like the numbing sensation, so it's considered bad manners to sprinkle the sansho pepper on your own! The separate dish of sansho pepper here has a good texture that doesn't make it look like a casual izakaya. It's not too rough or too fine, it's delicious. In the end, we all agreed to sprinkle it all over! (laughs) Oh, it's delicious! Even though it's a skewered tempura restaurant, the skewers didn't come out until the end, even though we ordered them at the beginning. When we asked, they said, "The skewers will take some time!" It's like they're not even a skewered tempura restaurant anymore! (laughs) By the way, the skewers weren't that tasty. I tried the mozzarella cheese skewer and the camembert cheese skewer with honey. I wander around Ameyoko, having drinks at various places, so I'm pretty tipsy by now. It's probably time to head to the airport for a peace of mind, but the drunkard (that's me) insists on just one more stop! So, we escape into this shop. I have a Lemon Sour (210 yen) and my companion has a Coca-Cola (210 yen). For food, we order shrimp tempura (210 yen), squid tempura (250 yen), crispy grilled chicken skewers (210 yen), fried potatoes (430 yen), and salted cabbage (370 yen). We also get a refill of Vice Sour (210 yen). Everything is delicious and we could probably keep going, but it's really time to call it a night (not just because of the time). When we pay the bill, it comes out to 3200 yen including the 440 yen cover charge for both of us! It's cheap, great value, and amazing! I wish they would open a branch in Sapporo too. Thank you, Jyuraku, for a wonderful meal!

I went on a Monday night. We were seated right away. They had a variety of skewers and other appetizers! I was impressed by the many dishes using natto. Even the potato salad had a unique twist to it, making it stand out from the usual. If you're looking for an izakaya that feels familiar yet different, I highly recommend this place!

I came back to Ameyoko again (lol). [Taste] I felt that the ingredients were not that great, especially the camembert and smelt. If the ingredients are not good, then the kushikatsu is also not great. [Service] Don't expect much in terms of hospitality. When it comes to kushikatsu, Osaka's Shinsekai area wins. I had 3 glasses of Hoppy. It's good for drinking cheaply, isn't it?

I wanted to have a casual drink in Ueno and decided to visit this place. The food was not bad, but overall I felt unsatisfied. I probably won't visit again. The restaurant is located on a side street towards Okachimachi Station from Ueno Station. There are several cheap and cozy-looking restaurants in the area. It was a hot day, so having the door open constantly was a bit uncomfortable. I ordered some food and drinks, but the staff seemed a bit low-energy. The dimly lit interior added to the gloomy atmosphere. The food arrived shortly, and while it wasn't bad, it wasn't particularly delicious either. It was hot, and I wasn't feeling excited, so I left early. I won't be returning, but I hope the young staff members working there will do their best.

My parents came to Tokyo from Shikoku with a sudden flight card and we went on a Tokyo tour. My mother and sister went to Omotesando, so I took care of my father and we went to Ueno and Asakusa area as per his request. While walking around in Ueno, we found many charming daytime drinking establishments that were not open last year. However, my father doesn't drink much... he can't even compare to a Tosa man... We randomly chose a donburi place we saw. It was a different concept from the regular Jyuraku restaurant. - Motsu Meshi Donburi (¥700) - It was simmered to be tender, but the flavor was a bit light. They also served some spicy bits which I personally can't handle! The service staff seemed to embody the phrase "no friendliness or crap" (this is subjective).

Located just a short walk from Ueno Station, this place is not on the main street. I visited after enjoying cherry blossom viewing in Ueno, just like last year. With the pandemic restrictions lifted, Ueno's drinking district is packed with people even on a weekday afternoon. I called ahead and requested the all-you-can-eat and drink option. The staff on the phone was very friendly. When I arrived, there were no other customers inside, unlike other crowded places with waiting lines. I started with a draft beer (old Super Dry) that had a crab aroma. My companion didn't like it, so I drank it right away. The refill was just average. I kindly exchanged it with my companion. The appetizers included kelp cabbage and takoyaki, which were crispy. The 10 types of fried food were served in advance (mandatory). I had to finish all 10 pieces before ordering more. The pork was thin but tasty, while the salmon and shiitake were small and ordinary. The onion was big and delicious, while the eggplant was very long. The cheese and nagaimo were average, and the shishito pepper, lotus root, and squid were small and tough. After finishing 12 pieces, the all-you-can-eat started. I ended up eating 12 prawns, which were large and delicious. The scallops were not baby-sized, and the sauce was served separately. I left some cabbage and takoyaki but enjoyed the kushikatsu. The meal ended with ice cream. The female staff were attentive and accommodating, especially the married one who noticed everything and promptly addressed any issues. The other staff member was more reserved. I had 9 beers and plenty of prawns, so I was very satisfied. I wish they would add corn tea to the all-you-can-drink menu. I stuck with beer until the end, while my companion had a red ball punch. I will definitely visit again.

Went here with friends for drinks. The place had plenty of available seats as usual. We ordered deep-fried smelt and mozzarella cheese on skewers. The mozzarella cheese was served hot and stretchy. The popular dish from Higashi-Jujo, the spicy grilled tofu and pork belly, had a nice oily and spicy flavor. The fried garlic added a unique touch to the dish. The bonjiri potato was a simple yet surprisingly addictive dish. The restaurant allows smoking, which can be a bit bothersome, but we were able to enjoy our skewers anytime.

Kushikatsu-kun! This is a smoking-friendly restaurant. It was hard to find one. Kushikatsu is just for fun, but it might be good for a second stop. The frozen takoyaki was so-so. The tulip was okay. Lately, I've been hooked on corn tea highballs.

During my outing, I had lunch at a restaurant near Ameyoko, just after exiting Ueno Station. I arrived around 12:30 on a weekday and was seated immediately. I ordered the "Spicy Pork Rice Bowl Set" for 1080 yen. As expected, the flavor was strong and catered towards younger tastes. Despite being older, I personally enjoy this type of flavor, so it was not a problem for me. The price was a bit high for a lunch in Ueno, but the meal was tasty and filling. I'm not sure if I would revisit for lunch, but I think it would be a good place for a casual drink in the evening.

I visited a tempura skewer restaurant near Ueno Station, just a 2-3 minute walk away. The restaurant is run by the same company as Gyu-Kaku. I had a craving for tempura skewers, so I decided to stop by. The interior of the restaurant has a counter and tables on the second floor, creating a lively atmosphere. I ordered a set of ten assorted skewers, including eggplant, eringi mushrooms, octopus sausage, shishito peppers, quail eggs, yam, pork belly, salmon, scallops, and lotus root. The freshly fried skewers were delicious, especially the mustard grilled one. The flavors were addictive and I hope this dish becomes popular nationwide. The pickled radish served as a nice palate cleanser. In addition to the skewers, the pork bowl seemed to be a popular dish as well.

This is a deep-fried skewer restaurant. I tried their "Choi-nomi set" which includes 5 assorted skewers, cabbage, and one drink. I chose a draft beer for my drink. You can have unlimited refills of cabbage with salted kombu. The skewers included enoki mushrooms, Vienna sausages, lotus root, eggplant, and salmon. I also ordered a special chu-hi for 360 yen. It's a casual place where you can easily enjoy drinks and food.

In the Ueno Guard neighborhood, there are many Jyuraku restaurants, and while the main street was crowded, this particular place was quite empty, so I decided to go in. They offered a great deal on a set for a little drinking, which included 5 assorted skewers. I ordered it along with a special highball and added some shrimp and asparagus skewers. I wasn't expecting much from the skewers, but they turned out to be surprisingly delicious, with quality ingredients like shrimp. I enjoyed dipping the skewers in the sauce, and thought it would be even better if they offered a choice of sauces for an additional fee. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the skewers at this restaurant.

Thank you so much! Have you ever had a craving for fried food out of nowhere? Well, that's exactly how I felt today, so I decided to visit Kushiage Juraku. It's located just a few minutes' walk from Ueno Station, under the JR overpass. I arrived at 4 pm and the place was already full. The operation is run by 4 people and it operates on an order-by-order basis. Luckily, I was able to enjoy my meal under the clear blue sky. The ventilation was good and the atmosphere was pleasant. I ordered a variety of fried foods and I must say, I was completely satisfied. The taste was average, nothing extraordinary. The service was a bit slow due to the lack of staff, but overall, I had a great time indulging in all the fried food. Thank you for the meal!
