I visited "Ore no Ikiru Michi @ Ueno Store" located a few minutes' walk from Okachimachi Station. I have visited the store in Hakusan many times before. The Ueno store opened with operating hours until around 10 pm at the beginning, then extended to midnight with continuous service. It's amazing! When I arrived at 11 pm, there were already two customers ahead of me, so I had to wait and was seated as the third customer. Even though it was quite empty at first, more customers started coming in quickly, and the restaurant soon became full. I was lucky to get in without waiting, as I had given up once before due to long lines at 9 pm. It seems like the place is usually crowded. The Ueno store is new to me, so I usually go for the basics. The ramen costs 900 yen, and free toppings include garlic and extra pork fat. While waiting, I checked out the menu options. The standard noodle portion is 300g, with a small option of 150g for 50 yen less and a large option of up to 500g for an additional 150 yen. On the table, there are soy sauce, vinegar, black pepper, and shichimi pepper. I noticed that many customers prefer the soup-less ramen. The kitchen had a staff of two, then a third person joined in. It's great to see that they have enough staff, considering the shortage in many places lately. The ramen arrived, and the vegetable portion was standard, not overwhelming. The garlic was quite generous, and I vowed never to go for extra garlic. The extra pork fat comes in a separate dish. The default amount of pork fat is already on the ramen, so unless you have a high tolerance for fat, you might not need to add more. The soup was slightly emulsified, sweet, with a mild richness. It could use a bit more salt, but you can adjust it with the soy sauce provided on the table. It would be even better with a bit more umami from animal sources. The noodles were thick and curly, with a nice chewy texture. The vegetables didn't have much flavor, so I dipped them in the separate dish of extra pork fat to make them more enjoyable. The pork was tender and not overly salty, which was a relief. The garlic was extremely spicy, to the point where it burned my stomach. It's hard to describe how spicy it was in words. I might consider going for less garlic next time. The overall experience was consistent with the Ore no Ikiru Michi in Hakusan. It's great to have a place where you can get a garlic boost late at night in this area, where "Buta-yama" was the only choice before. I would rate the ramen, garlic, and pork fat at 3.5 stars. I will try the soup-less ramen next time, and I'll remember to go easy on the garlic. I should reread this review before my next visit. Thank you for the meal.
