My favorite beef tongue restaurant. Usually I make a reservation and order beef tongue steak, but this time I visited without a reservation. I enjoyed various cuts of beef tongue such as tongue, lean meat, and tip. However, I felt that the quality of the main beef tongue had slightly declined compared to before... It made me realize the passage of time.

Tatsuyoshi at Higashi-Ikebukuro Yonchome is a beef tongue restaurant. Beef tongue grilled over charcoal, barley rice, grated yam, and oxtail soup for 2,900 yen. Score: 3.8/5. The cost performance is a big issue. But the taste of the beef tongue is definitely good! It was the most delicious I've ever had! The beef tongue is incredibly tender. It can be easily bitten through. Although it is grilled over charcoal, there is no unpleasant bitterness from being burnt, only the umami of the beef tongue and a moderate saltiness can be felt. However, the disappointing part is the cost performance. It's a bit too expensive. Just 5 pieces, each bite-sized, cost 1,800 yen for a single item. So, I'll deduct 0.4 points for the cost performance. The grated yam and oxtail soup are, well, just average (laughs). I think it's enough to just have the beef tongue with rice. I'd even be happy to have double the amount of beef tongue. It may cost more, though (laughs). Also, it's nice that you can take as much miso-pickled green chili peppers as you like! I ate a lot of them (laughs). - Other Information - No waiting on a weekday around 7:15 PM. Visited on May 12, 2023 (Friday) after work. It was my first visit after enjoying four sauna sessions at Times Spa Lesta. The quaint appearance that evokes nostalgia, the hospitality of the owner, and the delicious beef tongue all blended together at this establishment. I entered around 7:30 PM to find only two other customers. The cozy interior consisted of an L-shaped counter. I started with a bottled beer, looking forward to a drink after the sauna, and then checked out the simple menu. I ordered the grilled beef tongue and engaged in conversation with the other customers and the owner. The tongue was served in about 5 minutes, and I immediately dug in. The crispy texture and slightly salty flavor were delightful. The fat content was just right. As the other customers left, I chatted with the owner. He mentioned that he had trained at the renowned Sendai restaurant "Taisuke," that he cleans the exhaust fan thoroughly every day, that he loves music, that the beef tongue is from Australia, and that he plans to continue running the business for over 10 years. Although my stay was only about 30 minutes, I learned a lot. The owner's genuine smile and the additional boiled beef tongue made my experience even better. As I left, he invited me to stop by again after a sauna session. I definitely need to revisit. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

After work, I went for drinks with my senior at a beef tongue specialty restaurant located about a 5-minute walk from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station. The owner of the shop, who trained at the main store of Taizuke in Sendai, has been running this renowned shop in Ikebukuro for 25 years after various twists and turns. The restaurant has received decent media exposure and I had been curious about it for a while, so I made my first visit. We arrived a little after 7 pm and there were no other customers. The interior of the restaurant has 6 counter seats and 5 tatami seats. The 82-year-old karate master owner was running the place alone. We ordered boiled beef tongue, grilled beef tongue, red meat, and beef tongue skewers, along with highballs. Each menu item apparently comes from different parts of the beef tongue, with the tenderness increasing from boiled to grilled. While we waited, the boiled beef tongue was served, which we enjoyed dipping in ponzu sauce mixed with yuzu pepper. The meaty texture of the grilled items was impressive, and the salt seasoning was just right, even better than what I've had in Sendai. The cost performance may even be better here. Most importantly, the owner, who has a strong personality (even making the highballs stronger as he goes), had a delightful way of talking, even if I couldn't understand half of what he was saying. He mentioned that many high-ranking officials from famous companies are regular customers, which makes sense given the delicious food and warm atmosphere of the restaurant. I hope this excellent restaurant near my workplace continues to thrive and operate for a long time. Thank you for the delicious meal. I will definitely come back again.

I want to ask my past self, "Where have you been eating all this time?" because I can't eat beef tongue anywhere else now except here! The photogenic thick-sliced beef tongue was really delicious, right? If you're lucky, you can walk in to the restaurant, but there are few seats and limited stock, so making a reservation is a must. The first time I had the set meal with raw egg yolk and soy sauce mixed with grated yam, topped with seaweed as a nice touch. And don't forget the tail soup! Just look at the third photo - you can easily clean the bone all around! On my second visit, I had to make a reservation at least three days in advance for the beef tongue steak! First, they show you the sliced tongue. It's not the usual vertical slices, but horizontal ones. The texture and thickness of the slices are different and really interesting! The middle part is the most tender and delicious. If you can't finish it all, you can take the leftovers home. It's still delicious even when cold. Reheating it in the microwave might make it tough, so it's better to eat it cold. It was so delicious - I want to eat it again just thinking about it. I won't settle for anything less when it comes to beef tongue.

Visited a long-established beef tongue restaurant for the first time. Visited on Saturday at 8:10 PM. Beef tongue grill, barley rice, grated yam, and oxtail soup for 2,900 yen including tax. The chef grilled the beef tongue carefully on a shichirin and it was incredibly tender. It was the most delicious beef tongue I have ever had. The oxtail soup was full of flavor and the oxtail was melt-in-your-mouth tender, so delicious! It's a bit pricey so I can't go often, but I definitely want to visit again.

The tongue was of high quality and perfectly cooked. It oozes with flavor until the very end. The miso-pickled green chili peppers were also excellent and could make rice taste even better. The downside is that the price is a bit high for the portion size. The oxtail soup was just okay, so it's better to skip the soup to save on cost.

I finally visited this restaurant that I couldn't go to due to Corona, making a last-minute reservation for a Saturday night visit. It was around 7:00 pm and there were no other customers at that time, just one older man running the place. The restaurant has about 7 counter seats and it's quite cozy. They used to serve lunch as well, but now they only operate at night. Apparently, they stopped serving lunch because they had too many picky customers who were a hassle to deal with. We started with some beer and were served a miso paste with green chili peppers as a snack. It had a nice spicy kick to it. While we waited for the beef tongue to cook on the grill, the owner skillfully cooked it for us. We ordered grilled beef tongue, boiled tongue, lean meat, meatballs, and rib meat, but kept coming back to the delicious grilled beef tongue. The owner was friendly and talkative, making it a fun time. I would definitely like to visit this place again.

It's been a while since I visited Tatsuyoshi! I've been wanting to go once things settle down with the pandemic, so this visit was long overdue. The usual owner was there as always. We ordered: - Beef tongue (around 1500 yen?) x2 - Lean meat (700 yen) - Sagari (700 yen) x3 - Grated yam with rice (around 600 yen?) - Whiskey set As usual, we asked for a comparison of different cuts of meat. The grilled beef tongue was especially tender with plenty of juices. Once you start eating it, you can't stop. The lean meat was similar to the beef tongue but with less juice and a good chewy texture. The sagari was even more rough and a bit firmer. Personally, I like the sagari the best. We ordered more beef tongue for another round of comparison. Eating them side by side really brings out the deliciousness. The accompanying cabbage adds a nice flavor. And the spicy pickled vegetables with chili peppers! It's quite spicy, but when eaten with the cabbage and meat, it enhances the flavor even more. Lastly, the grated yam with rice was a great finish. I used to frequent this place over 5 years ago, so I was happy that they still remembered me after all this time. Lately, I haven't been able to eat as much grilled meat, but I could keep eating the beef tongue here forever. It was so delicious. Thank you for the meal.

I felt like eating beef tongue, so I stopped by. The place had a simple setup and seemed to be run by just one person. They mentioned that they are only open at night. I ordered a bottle of beer and various beef tongue dishes. The owner skillfully started grilling them on the charcoal grill. The beef tongue arrived pretty quickly. It had that chewy texture that you expect from beef tongue in Sendai. It was delicious and went really well with the beer. I would love to visit again.

In March, in the East Ikebukuro area of Tokyo, I had a quick dinner at Tatsuyoshi, a beef tongue restaurant that had just opened in the evening. The restaurant is located about a 3-minute walk north of Higashi-Ikebukuro Station. The exterior exudes a sense of history, and the interior consists of counter seats. The somewhat elderly owner, dressed in a blue work kimono, greeted us. There were no other customers during our visit. The menu is simple, focusing on beef tongue dishes with the option to order individual items as well. I ordered the following: 1) Grilled beef tongue with barley rice for 2,000 yen, 2) Grilled beef tongue with barley rice and tail soup for 2,500 yen, and 3) Grilled beef tongue with barley rice, grated yam, and tail soup for 2,800 yen. On this occasion, alcohol was not available. The taciturn owner began cooking, building up our expectations. The grilled beef tongue with barley rice, grated yam, and tail soup dish looked appealing. The beef tongue was cut into bite-sized pieces, offering a rich texture and flavor without any unpleasant taste. Although the seasoning was a bit strong, it was within an acceptable range. The tail soup was flavorful and delicious. The barley rice and grated yam paired well together. Despite feeling that the portion of beef tongue was a bit small for the price, I savored each bite. I enjoyed the meal in the quiet atmosphere created by the reserved owner. Considering the rising cost of ingredients, I left the restaurant satisfied after indulging in a little luxury. First visit. A beef tongue specialty store located a 1-minute walk from the Toden Arakawa Line Higashi-Ikebukuro Yonchome Station. Although I walked from JR Ikebukuro Station. The interior of the store seems to have only counter seats, with not many seats available. It was empty probably due to the prohibition of alcohol during the period. Inside the open kitchen behind the counter, elderly men and women are working. Maybe they are a married couple? Well, since I came to a beef tongue restaurant, I ordered the beef tongue, of course. I really wanted to enjoy it with draft beer and rice, but the store was strictly following the alcohol ban, so I had to resist. I ordered the beef tongue set meal #3 from the menu. I also ordered the beef tongue tsukune because it sounded delicious. The total bill was 2800 yen. I was served plain water, so I didn't order any drinks. After all, pairing beef tongue with cola... doesn't sound right, does it? The beef tongue is grilled on a shichirin. The tsukune is prepared in advance and then seared on the shichirin before being served. The contents of the beef tongue set meal #3 are the typical beef tongue set meal. Although not shown in the pictures, they also provide green chili miso pickles. I don't eat it because I don't like it. The amount of beef tongue looks a bit small and lonely. On the other hand, the oxtail soup has a large oxtail in it, giving it a powerful presence. Let's dig in. The drinks are cheap. Beer is also 400-500 yen. They grill beef tongue on charcoal. When I asked if they also serve lunch because it was written as bento, they replied in a friendly manner, "We can't do it anymore." It's recommended for leisurely drinking.

The time is 17:20. It was conveniently not crowded. The elderly couple running the place are very friendly. The taste of the set menu number 2, Tan, is really good. The soup is also excellent. However, the portion size is a bit small. In terms of cost-performance, it's not that great.

During the self-restraint period, I visited this place and alcohol was strictly prohibited. The beef tongue here has a concentrated flavor, almost like it has been aged, making it very rich in taste. It actually tasted better without alcohol. The atmosphere is a bit eccentric with a quiet female owner and a grumpy old man. When it comes to beef tongue, this place is the first that comes to mind. In Tokyo, I can't think of any other place.
