Today's lunch: I finally went to Tenhide, a renowned tempura restaurant that has been selected as one of the top 100 tempura restaurants on Tabelog. The lunch prices are reasonable, but the timing from 11:30 to 13:30 often overlaps with work hours, making it difficult to visit. I arrived at around 12:00 and there were already 2 groups of 5 people waiting in line. After a 25-minute wait, I finally got a seat at the counter and ordered the "Tenju" set meal. The atmosphere inside was luxurious, with the sound of tempura frying in the background. The tempura set included whiting, shrimp, onion, sweet potato, eggplant, pickled ginger, and mixed tempura. Each bite was surprisingly delicious. If you're torn between ordering a tempura bowl or a mixed tempura bowl, I recommend the Tenju set meal where you can enjoy both. For those with limited time during lunch, it's advisable to arrive early as the wait can be quite long.

Today's lunch was a bit luxurious at Tenkyu in Nishi-Shinjuku. I had the tenju, which was filled with sea bream, shrimp, tempura, eggplant, onion, corn, pickled ginger, and plenty of vegetables. Each bite was enjoyable! The tempura and corn were especially delicious! The wakame in the miso soup was also great, and the orange jelly dessert was tasty. I had a truly happy 20 minutes there. The restaurant lived up to its reputation as a top-notch establishment. The place was smaller than I expected. I was lucky to get in without waiting today, but I imagine it's usually quite busy.

After a business meeting in Shinjuku, I took my junior colleague to have dinner at Tenshu, where you can enjoy calm tempura in Shinjuku, drink well, and all for under 15,000 yen. The location in a back alley in Nishi-Shinjuku is not crowded, making it a great spot in Shinjuku. It's easy to make a reservation, making it suitable for business meetings or casual outings with female friends. The wide selection of drinks is also a plus. The service, including the head chef at the counter, is just right. The standard S course was great today, with 10 tempura items including conger eel, matsutake mushrooms, and abalone, as well as three side dishes of sashimi, all for 8,800 yen. While they also offer a reasonable tendon lunch, the true charm lies in the evening course with drinks.

At noon, I received a message from my senior asking to have lunch in Shinjuku, so I got up from my sleepy body and left the house. This season, just walking a little makes you sweat. Feeling a bit down, I met up with my senior and they took me to a restaurant called "Tenshu". It's a famous tempura restaurant that won the title of one of the top 100 restaurants in 2022. While dinner may be expensive and hard to visit, lunch is around 1000 yen. The restaurant sign is stylish and cool. Inside, it has a traditional, old-fashioned atmosphere with a counter and tatami seating. We were seated in the tatami area, took off our shoes, and ordered the following menu: Tempura Rice Bowl (1020 yen). I wasn't sure about the difference between a bowl and a set, so I chose the cheaper option. Later, I found out that the set has more food, hence the slightly higher price. The bowl arrived in about 10 minutes. I like strong flavors, so I asked for extra sauce, and they gave me a small bottle of sauce. The tempura was not the crispy type I expected, but it was delicious, especially the corn tempura. For dessert, it was simple but tasty. I would love to go back again!

I visited "Tenshu" in Nishi-Shinjuku this month as well. Established in Meiji 36, this long-standing tempura restaurant has been selected as one of the "Tempura Top 100 Stores 2022". The second generation is currently running the business. I arrived at 11:28, 2 minutes before opening time on a weekday, and was able to enter along with 6 other customers. -------------------------------------------------- Tempura Kakiage Donburi 1,100 yen (tax included) Comes with pickled cucumber, miso soup, and orange jelly. -------------------------------------------------- This time, I chose the Kakiage Donburi. The crispy tempura made of shrimp, small fish, and shiso leaves, fried in a blend of sesame oil and other oils, was light and not too sweet. It was fried to perfection. The pickled ginger tempura also added a nice touch. The dessert of orange jelly was refreshing. Although the "Tenju" set is recommended, the Kakiage Donburi was also delicious. The attentive service was also excellent. Thank you for the delicious meal.

I visited "Tempura Hyakumeiten" in Nishi-Shinjuku around 1pm for lunch! They are open from 11:30am to 1:30pm, and all items are available for takeout! Plus, you get a 100 yen discount from the in-store prices! However, I dined in this time! The lunch menu includes Tempura Rice Bowl ¥1,020, Tempura Assorted Meal ¥1,430, Kakiage Donburi ¥1,100, and Tempura Set Meal ¥2,550. I ordered the Tempura Rice Bowl for ¥1,020! (You can get a large serving of rice for an extra ¥100, free with the Tempura Set Meal). The fact that you can enjoy a tempura bowl from this well-known restaurant at this price made me feel like I got a good deal! The tempura bowl arrived in about 15 minutes after ordering. It was topped with a generous amount of tempura! When I took a bite, I found the tempura to be a bit soft rather than crispy. Maybe it was because of the sauce? But the taste was delicious! The "ginger tempura" and "corn tempura" were unexpected and surprising! Especially the corn tempura had a great texture and paired well with the tempura. The rich sauce also suited my taste! Dessert and miso soup were included as well! The portion was satisfying and I left feeling full! It was just right for me, but men might prefer the large serving! I would love to visit again if I have the chance!

I went to the restaurant during the weekday opening hours as it was mentioned on Tabelog that it gets crowded. By noon, it was already packed. Since I was with my child, we were seated in a tatami room. I decided to order the Tempura Rice Bowl. The tempura had pickled ginger and corn, which was a bit different. Among them, the small shrimp and scallop tempura were exquisite! They were not included in the tempura rice bowl, so I felt good about ordering them. The dipping sauce was lighter than it looked, with a flavor that even children could enjoy. The refreshing orange jelly for dessert was also delicious.

Just before 11:30 am, there were two groups of customers lined up. I had originally planned to go to the curry shop right next to this place, but due to summer vacation, I decided to change to this place. The shop opened shortly after, and I was seated at the counter right by the entrance. The menu was simple, as shown in the image. I have developed a crustacean allergy, so I asked the staff at the counter to confirm the menu. The "Tempura Rice Bowl" for 1430 yen could be changed to something else instead of shrimp, but they didn't explain what it was changed to. After a 10-minute wait, the dish arrived with fried ayu fish, scallops, eggplant, corn, ginger, and onions. It was not too sweet, and the sauce was not too heavy, just delicious. The scallop tempura and corn were particularly tasty as the batter was not overpowering. The miso soup with seaweed and tofu was also delicious. Considering the location, the portion size for the price was quite impressive. The service was decent, but the attitude towards the new staff member cooking at the counter was not very pleasant, which was distracting. Overall, it was a bit disappointing, but the meal was enjoyable.

Second visit for lunch. The first time I visited during the lunch rush and had to wait a bit, so this time I went around 11:30. About 80% of the seats were already taken. As I was dining alone, I was seated at the counter and ordered the lunch tendon. I watched eagerly as the tempura was fried right in front of me, and before I knew it, my dish was served. The tempura had just the right amount of batter and oil, and the sweet and savory sauce soaked in well. The lunch was great value for money! I especially liked the tempura red ginger, which was unique. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also nice, and I felt comfortable dining there. I would love to visit again if I have errands nearby!

It was lunchtime in Shinjuku, so I decided to try this specialty shop that had caught my eye with its reasonably priced lunch menu. I ordered the kakiage-don for 1,100 yen, and it was ready quickly. Along with the kakiage-don, I received pickles, miso soup, and dessert. The kakiage-don was small but delicious, with small shrimp, scallops, and shiso leaves in the tempura. The tempura was light and crispy, and the sauce was just right. The pickled ginger tempura added a refreshing touch. The miso soup was filled with tofu and wakame seaweed, and the dessert was crushed jelly. Overall, I thought the kakiage-don was a good value for 1,100 yen. I would like to try the tenju (tempura on rice) next time.

During lunchtime, there is always a line and I couldn't go because of work, but luckily I had some free time and was nearby, so I waited for the restaurant to open and went in. 10 minutes later, it was already full. For lunch, they had tempura rice bowl, tempura rice set, mixed tempura rice bowl, and tempura set meal. I heard that the tempura rice bowl was reasonably priced so I ordered that. However, everyone else who had ordered seemed to have chosen the mixed tempura rice bowl, so maybe that would have been a better choice? The person next to me had the tempura rice set, which also looked good. The tempura rice bowl, miso soup, pickles, and dessert arrived. The tempura was lightly battered, and the sauce had a refined taste, typical of a long-standing establishment. Personally, I think that for a rice bowl where you put the tempura on top of the rice and pour the sauce over it, a slightly thicker batter would have preserved the crispy texture better. I imagine the tempura in the set meal or ordered individually at dinner would be excellent. That's probably why everyone was choosing the mixed tempura rice bowl. The tempura had eel and seasonal vegetables, which showed the quality of the traditional restaurant. I was happy to see tempura with pickled ginger, which I love, so I would like to try the mixed tempura next time I visit.

I visited "Tenshu" in Nishi-Shinjuku. Established in Meiji 36, this long-standing tempura restaurant has been selected as one of the "Tempura Top 100 Stores 2022". The second generation is currently running the business. I arrived at 11:40 on a weekday and barely secured one of the two counter seats. I ordered the "Tempura Assortment" for 1,430 yen, which came with pickled cucumbers, miso soup, and orange jelly. The tempura was fried in a blend of sesame oil, resulting in a light and crispy texture with just the right amount of sweetness in the sauce. The assortment included shrimp, smelt fish, mixed tempura, green peppers, onions, zucchini, and pickled ginger. The zucchini tempura was particularly fresh and delicious, and I also enjoyed the added touch of pickled ginger. The refreshing orange jelly dessert was a nice way to end the meal. For those wondering about the difference between "Tempura Donburi" and "Tempura Assortment", the main distinction lies in the presentation - one is served in a bowl while the other is served in a stacked box. "Tenshu" offers a variety of tempura items in their assortment, making it a more luxurious option compared to the 1,020 yen Tempura Donburi, which is also very satisfying. I recommend trying the Tempura Assortment for a more indulgent experience. On the day of my visit, there were foreign guests at the counter seats who had reserved a course. They were served dishes like "ayu fish" and "eggplant", with explanations given in English. It was a delightful dining experience.

I checked out this place in Nishi-Shinjuku for lunch based on a follower's comment. I don't know this area well, so I did a little searching. There is a big stone at the entrance of the restaurant, surrounded by buildings, but it's an old house with a nice atmosphere. It was full inside, so I waited outside for a bit. I ordered while waiting, so my tempura rice bowl came out quickly once I sat down. I opted for the large size for an extra 100 yen, which came with red miso soup, pickles, and jelly. Red pickled ginger is rare in Kanto, and it's been a while since I've had megochi. The shrimp was a bit small, but the three types of vegetables and kakiage were tasty. The broth was light but delicious. The owner was friendly, and I definitely want to come back to this place.

The tempura was crispy and well fried with megochi, shrimp, onion, zucchini, eggplant, kakiage, and pickled ginger. However, the donburi sauce was a bit light in flavor, so I asked for extra sauce and it tasted delicious after pouring it over. The owner and staff were friendly. I wish there was a way to enter the restaurant without waiting in line. A bit inconvenient for repeat customers.

I visited again after being turned down for a lunch reservation last time, and this time I arrived after 1 pm. I had to wait a few minutes but was eventually seated. I ordered the tempura bowl for 1,000 yen, which I found to be quite a good deal. The portion size was small, but the shrimp and vegetables were delicious. It felt like a little happiness for this price. I would like to try the tempura set meal and beer next time.

Dining with my mother. My mother is picky about the budget even though she doesn't pay for it herself. She says she wants to eat tempura, but then claims that fried food makes her stomach heavy. That's my mother for you. So, I had some trouble and searched for this place. It's located deep in Nishi-Shinjuku, an area with many hidden gem restaurants among the mixed-use buildings. I was lucky to get a reservation for Friday night by calling two days in advance. I'll make sure to contact them earlier next time. The interior of the restaurant is a bit old-fashioned but has a charming atmosphere. The staff were surprisingly friendly, which is important. We started with small dishes and sashimi, followed by tempura starting with shrimp and a total of 8 items. There were seasonal dishes like young ayu and corn along the way. What surprised me the most was that the oil-absorbing paper had no oil on it at all. The oil drainage must be really good. Thanks to that, I didn't feel heavy at all. For the finale, you can choose between tempura tea, tempura rice bowl, or just plain rice. I chose tempura tea, which was delicious. The tempura and the chef's personality matched perfectly! I will visit again. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Tempura bowl for 1050 yen with shrimp, white fish, vegetables, and ginger. The taste is consistently delicious. Located near the office district in Nishi-Shinjuku, at this price point. Not aiming for Instagrammable flashy presentation, but a traditional tempura bowl from a well-established restaurant. Comes with miso soup, pickles, and even jelly for dessert, which is just fantastic. The chef and staff are also very friendly.

I revisited the renowned tempura restaurant, Tenshu, known for its tempura dishes. There were about 5 people waiting in line ahead of me, and I was able to enter the restaurant after a 30-minute wait. I ordered the following dish: - Tempura Set Meal (Tendon) for 1,430 yen * In addition to tempura, it also came with pickles, miso soup, and dessert. The Tendon included tempura similar to what you would find in a tempura bowl, along with kakiage, and they went well with the rich sauce. The fried pickled ginger that came with it was also delicious. I visited "Tenhide" located near the pedestrian bridge in Nishi-Shinjuku. This is a long-established tempura restaurant founded in 1903, and it has been selected as one of the "Tempura Top 100 Stores 2022". The current owner, the second generation, took over the business after the passing of the previous owner 7 years ago. When I arrived just after opening on a weekday at 11:40, there were only 4 seats left, and by noon there was already a small line forming outside. I ordered the "Tendon" for 1,020 yen (tax included), which came with pickled cucumbers, miso soup, and orange jelly. As it was my first visit, I chose the basic Tendon. It arrived in about 10 minutes. The tempura was fried in a blend of oils, giving it a brownish color, and the sauce was not too sweet. The tempura included shrimp, kisu fish, shiitake mushrooms, eggplant, sweet potato, and pickled ginger. The sweet potato was particularly delicious! The pickled ginger added a fresh accent, and the Tendon was not too heavy, despite its appearance. The rice portion was generous, and the refreshing orange jelly dessert was a nice touch. To enjoy such a rich Tendon for only 1,020 yen felt almost like a steal. From the moment I was greeted with "Welcome", the second-generation owner, his assistant, and the serving staff provided polite and elegant service throughout. It was a long-awaited visit to the popular "Tenhide" and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Next time, I will try the "Tenju".
