I was brought to this restaurant at night by an acquaintance in relation to work. It must have been almost two years since I last visited. I didn't specifically mention that I had been here before, but as I thought about my acquaintance, I quietly crossed the threshold thinking, "This person really knows how to choose a stylish restaurant." Established in 1924, nearly 90 years of "tradition" seems to permeate the atmosphere, from the exterior of the restaurant to its interior. I didn't have the option to choose from the menu, but I was more than satisfied with the "Miyako Set" (5000 yen) that my acquaintance had already decided on. The signature dish "Fukagawa Meshi" with clams was delicious, as well as the sashimi, tempura, chawanmushi, and soup. The sake also went down smoothly. I'll say this: the taste was not bad, but even if that were disregarded, I could feel that this restaurant has a charm and presence that can definitely attract customers with its tradition and atmosphere alone. I think these kinds of restaurants are precious and I really like them. I hope they continue unchanged for a long, long time.

The restaurant review content is too lengthy to be translated in one go. Here is the first part: The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries website has a section on food culture, where they feature a corner called "Local Home Cooking," and in that section, they talked about "Fukagawa Meshi." According to the information provided, "Fukagawa Meshi" originally consisted of quickly simmering leeks and fresh clams in miso, then pouring it over rice. There are now two types of Fukagawa Meshi: "bukkake" and "cooked-in." Additionally, there is a dish called "Fukagawa Nabe" that doesn't involve pouring over rice. During the Edo period, Tokyo Bay had many tidal flats, which were a treasure trove of shellfish. In particular, the area around Edo's Fukagawa was known for abundant clams, hamaguri, and aoyagi. Until the early Showa period, there were many stalls in Asakusa selling Fukagawa Meshi made with these shellfish, which became popular and widely consumed in households.

I used it for lunch. The atmosphere in the old building with tatami mats is excellent. I had a set of Fukagawa rice and tempura with beer from noon. The set includes tuna natto, simmered kelp, pickles, and soup, and it was quite a decent amount, but I finished it all. The Fukagawa rice was quite soft, perhaps because it was steamed in a steamer, but the clams were plump and had a good broth. The tempura consisted of eggplant, bell pepper, shrimp, squid, and beltfish, which you dip in tempura sauce. The side dishes were all delicious, and I almost forgot, but perhaps because I ordered beer, the appetizer of edamame and seafood mixed with mayonnaise was also tasty. There were people stretching their legs and relaxing after eating, and I thought tatami mats are nice and cozy. I wondered if it would be good to walk around the art museum a little tipsy, so I left the restaurant. Thank you for the meal.

Visit on Friday at 1:30 PM. Party of 4. Fukagawa meal set for 1980 yen. When you open the lid, you are greeted by a pleasant aroma of Fukagawa rice in a traditional wooden box. The two side dishes include seaweed and clam salad, and tuna with vinegar miso dressing. Located in a residential area, the quiet atmosphere of the room feels like entering a different world, especially on a weekday.

After a short 10-minute trip from Morishita Station in Tokyo, I arrived at a hidden gem called Wappo Miyako, a cozy restaurant with a stylish exterior. Although the location may be a bit tricky for first-time visitors, the anticipation along the way is heightened by the elegant appearance of the restaurant. The interior is surprisingly spacious, with seats comfortably arranged, creating a relaxing atmosphere. During my visit, I ordered the "Fukasashi" dish, a combination of Fukagawa rice and fresh sashimi, along with crispy fried dojo fish and vegetable-filled grilled chicken. The dojo fish was perfectly seasoned with salt, making it a perfect match for drinks. On the other hand, the vegetable-filled grilled chicken had a delightful flavor that added a nice touch. However, the highlight was the Fukagawa rice. The unique flavor that only a specialty shop can provide was evident from the first bite, distinguishing itself from a simple station bento. In August 2023, during the scorching midday heat, Wappo Miyako welcomed me with a serene atmosphere and fantastic cuisine. This restaurant, centered around Fukagawa rice, is a must-visit for anyone seeking delicious food and relaxation. I sincerely hope that as many people as possible can experience this and savor the flavors.

I enjoyed the Miyako set for ¥5500, which included Asahi Super Dry, Shirasu sake, and Oolong tea highball. The portions were generous. Please be aware that the Fukagawa rice dish contains clams and cannot be taken home. Payment is cash only, so please keep that in mind. The landlady provides excellent service, but her son can be a bit brusque, so be cautious. The appetizer included bay clam, agar, tuna with miso, pickled Japanese mustard spinach, shishito pepper, and tofu sashimi. The sashimi platter included ark shell, ark shell innards, sea bream, tuna, and yellowtail. The tempura platter featured bell pepper, eggplant, sand lance, shrimp, and conger eel.

On this day, my mother-in-law, who had been wanting to visit the long-established Fukagawa cuisine restaurant Miya Furusato, visited with my wife, her brother's wife, and their niece. We made a reservation in advance for the Miya Furusato set course. It was a hot day, so we started with a toast with beer (my wife had a soft drink as she doesn't drink alcohol). The set included sashimi, tempura, and Fukagawa cuisine. The sashimi was fresh, the tempura was crispy, and the Fukagawa cuisine, served in a steamer, was delicious with the flavors of clams and tofu skin. It was my first time trying Fukagawa cuisine, and I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of flavors. We all left the restaurant satisfied and then went shopping in Ginza before moving on to the next part of our evening. The dining room was a private tatami room with a calm atmosphere, adorned with traditional decorations, which added to the overall experience.

The menu is not extensive, but it is a place to enjoy Fukagawa cuisine. Relax in a tatami room and savor tempura, pickles, beer, and the fluffy Fukagawa rice served in a wooden box. The atmosphere alone is charming. The food is delicious and the old building is clean. There is no typical formality of a long-established restaurant, and the staff are friendly.

I had never tried Fukagawa cuisine outside of tourist spots, so I decided to visit during the second half of Golden Week. I arrived at 11:50 and the restaurant was about 40% full, not too crowded due to the location. Inside, you take off your shoes and sit on cushions at tables about 30cm high. Be careful if you're wearing flashy socks or a short skirt, as it might be a bit awkward. This time, I ordered Fukaten, which is Fukagawa cuisine with tempura (shrimp, squid, sillago, green pepper, eggplant) for 2970 yen. It took about 10 minutes for the food to arrive. The notable thing about the taste is the aroma of clams. It made me crave sake even though it was lunchtime (laughs). As soon as you lift the lid, a fragrant aroma rises, and even as it cools down, it remains delicious. Overall, it's on the salty side, so enjoying it with sake might be the way to go. It seems like Fukagawa hot pot with sake would be delicious at night. The staff on the floor are attentive, but sometimes the kitchen seems a bit absent. The customer service attitude is excellent. Next time, I'll come at night! Thank you for the meal!

I got off at Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Station and happened to find this restaurant while taking a stroll. It had a traditional inn-like atmosphere, and I was able to relax. The restaurant is known for its Fukagawa Meshi, which I tried for the first time. The broth was rich with clam flavor and the aroma of seaweed, and I finished it quickly because it was so delicious. The tempura and other side dishes were also tasty. I would like to visit again at night next time.

The atmosphere and taste are both excellent. The traditional, old buildings and interior create a charming space to spend time in. The low tables in the tatami seating can be a bit uncomfortable for the legs. I ordered the Fukagawa set meal, which includes Fukagawa rice, tempura, small side dishes, and soup. The Fukagawa rice is filled with plenty of clams, creating a rich umami flavor. The rice is steamed in a seiro, making it soft. Everything, including the side dishes, is delicious!

I suddenly felt like eating Fukagawa rice, so I decided to head to Morishita. In the middle of a residential area, there was a building with a quaint atmosphere, which was my destination for today. I hesitated for a moment between the weekday-only tempura bowl and the Fukagawa meal set (1980 yen), but I remembered my purpose and chose the Fukagawa meal set. The seating was spacious, accommodating solo diners, elegant ladies' gatherings, foreign couples, families with children, and various other customers. (From here on is the taste review) The rice was quite soft. When I tasted just the rice, it didn't have a strong clam flavor, but rather a gentle taste. The garnishes like mitsuba and green onions added a nice touch. However, when eaten with the clams, the clam flavor really stood out! Yes, this is it, this is the taste!! I wanted to enjoy the clams until the end, so I carefully balanced the portion of clams with each bite of rice. I haven't had Fukagawa rice much before, so I'd like to visit other restaurants to compare.

Sunday lunch. Today, I decided to try the traditional Fukagawa cuisine in Edo style. I arrived right after the opening so I was able to get a table quickly, but the restaurant was already bustling with customers and soon became full. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very charming, with even a vintage public telephone on display. I ordered the Fukagawa meal with tempura, which also came with thick rolled omelette and minced clams as side dishes. It was quite a luxurious meal. It was my first time trying Fukagawa cuisine, and it was delicious and very filling. The portion of rice was generous, and I left the restaurant feeling satisfied. Thank you for the meal.

I visited the super long-established traditional Japanese restaurant "Wakko Miyako" located a 5-minute walk from Morishita Station, established in 1924. I arrived 5 minutes before the opening on Saturday and was the 5th in line. I was able to enter as soon as they opened. I ordered the Fukagawa rice set for 1,980 yen, which came with small dishes, soup, and pickles. It was served in just over 10 minutes. The Fukagawa rice had a rich flavor of clams and a gentle taste, which was delicious. Fukagawa rice often becomes overwhelming due to its strong salty taste, but the one here had just the right amount of saltiness and was tasty. I enjoyed it until the end.

While living locally, I tried Fukagawa cuisine for the first time. I visited with my family for Saturday lunch. It was just past noon and the first floor was full, with tables spaced apart. The traditional Japanese house had a charming entrance, and we took off our shoes on the first floor's earthen floor before placing them in the shoe cabinet. The hostess at the counter had a pleasant Edo-style hospitality. We ordered two servings of Fukagawa cuisine. The clam-infused steamed rice in the steamer was delicious, packed with the essence of clams. The pickles, simmered shellfish, and vinegared miso with blue fish were all elegantly prepared. Today, the restaurant was filled with Japanese customers, but I wonder if it will soon be crowded with tourists from overseas. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Deep-fried rice filled with the history of a long-established restaurant! I'm not sure about the market price of deep-fried rice, but I think it might be a bit pricey. Inside a large bottle of shochu, there is plenty of clam-filled hot rice. It has a powerful presence. The small side dishes around it are delicious, with moist tofu, comforting clear soup, and pickles that go well with the rice. I always wanted to try it once, so I'm glad I could eat it at a long-established restaurant ^_^

Originally, the restaurant is open for evening business from 17:30, but we made a reservation in advance and arrived with 9 people around 17:15. We only reserved seats and had the Fukagawa meal set and drinks. I had visited the restaurant a few years ago, but unfortunately, the atmosphere has changed. The person in charge of the restaurant seemed very unhappy on the phone and when we arrived, which surprised everyone in our group. The atmosphere was not relaxing at all, and other customers left soon after. The food was delicious, and the restaurant itself has a long history, so it's a shame.

Long-awaited Fukagawa cuisine. Despite its plain appearance, the taste far exceeds expectations! The small dishes, including ankimo, are luxurious! The clear soup also has a refreshing yuzu fragrance. Although the portion looks large, it surprisingly goes down easily. The inn-like atmosphere and the hospitality of pouring green tea with a teapot are wonderful. While trendy shops are increasing in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, I still prefer this kind of place for its calming atmosphere and delicious food. I will definitely come back.

When it comes to Tokyo specialties, what comes to mind? Monjayaki? Dojo? Among them, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries selected Monjayaki and Fukagawa-meshi as Tokyo specialties. However, I have only eaten the bento at Shinagawa Station, so I have always wanted to try it. The restaurant has a charming atmosphere. It's full of customers. Maybe they are tourists. As for the taste of Fukagawa-meshi, I prefer the bento from Shinagawa. It has a gentle flavor. I think the bento from Shinagawa is well made. I'm sure Shiba Ryotaro also visited there!

I didn't really know much about Fukagawa cuisine, and somehow I had replaced it in my mind with Yanagawa. So when the rice topped with clams came out, I was like, huh? The long-established restaurant had a very charming tatami room atmosphere, and it was nice to feel the breeze coming in from outside. I went during lunchtime, and there were seats available, with enough space between tables to relax. I ordered a set meal which came with steamed egg custard and soup in addition to rice. The rice was hot and flavorful with the essence of the clams soaked in, very delicious. However, towards the end, I felt a bit tired of the taste... it was a bit lacking in richness for those who prefer strong flavors. I regret not choosing the set with tempura. It was tasty though. Thank you for the meal.

This is a set of Fukagawa rice and tempura for 2,750 yen. It comes out in 8 minutes. The Fukagawa rice here is not the soup-style, but rather cooked or steamed? The bottom of the container is like a sieve, similar to a steaming basket. The taste is light and the rice is soft and flavorful. There seemed to be fewer clams, I would have been happier with more. The tempura was also delicious. I sat in the large hall in a tatami room, and since I entered at different times, I had it all to myself! It felt like a relaxing little trip. Considering this kind of healing experience, it doesn't feel overpriced at all! Above all, I was most comforted by the grandma's service. Thank you for the meal!

In the midst of the intense heat, I drove to the restaurant feeling hot. When I arrived, I was able to enjoy the nostalgic flavors of my hometown. Thanks to that, I chose to drive back sober. I ordered clam miso soup, fuki miso, small fish tempura, deep-fried loach, megochi tempura, pickled fish, deep-fried rice bowl, sashimi set, grilled local chicken, 4 small bottles of beer, 7 bottles of sake, and 1 non-alcoholic drink. As you get older, clam miso soup becomes more delicious. The deep-fried loach had a smaller portion, and the deep-fried rice bowl had a rich Kanto flavor that goes well in hot weather. I was a bit concerned about the uneven service.
