On a rare cloudy Sunday afternoon for this time of year, I made my way to Nakameguro. The purpose was to visit this soba restaurant that I hadn't been to in a while. Located just 2-3 minutes from the station and close to the Meguro River, I expected it to be crowded. Upon arrival a little before 2 pm, there were already 3 groups of 6 people waiting in line. I hesitated but decided to join the line, and soon after, 7-8 more people lined up behind me. As a result, I ended up waiting for about 30 minutes before finally being seated. The layout of the restaurant had not changed much, but the central large table was divided into sections with acrylic panels, and I was seated at one of the sides. The atmosphere inside was surprisingly calm, with the staff not rushing around, and many people leisurely enjoying soba and sake. I started with a beer (Heartland small bottle) and ordered two dishes as appetizers. "Wasabi Ohitashi": thinly sliced stem wasabi pickled in soy sauce, not as strong in flavor as it looks. The texture was good and suitable as an appetizer, although I found the chopped seaweed on top unnecessary. "Duck Roast": 5-6 slices of duck breast cooked with low-temperature method were arranged on scallions, sprinkled with finely chopped green onions, and drizzled with a slightly sweet soy sauce-based sauce. The pink, juicy meat had a hint of spiciness, and when wrapped with the scallions, it was quite delicious. I continued with "Kakiarare Seiro" soba. The kakiarare consisted of small scallops and diced shrimp coated in seaweed-flavored batter and deep-fried. The soba noodles were made from coarsely ground flour, giving it a rustic texture. The aroma and texture were excellent, and the soba paired well with the flavorful dipping sauce. Unfortunately, the black bowl didn't showcase the color of the sauce well, but I believe it would have looked better in a white ceramic bowl. The soba broth was light and clear, allowing the flavor of the sauce to shine through, and I savored every drop. Despite its popularity due to its location, the restaurant provided a comfortable and relaxing soba dining experience. It's recommended to visit after 3 pm on weekends for a more leisurely atmosphere. Either way, this soba restaurant holds a special place in my heart and I will definitely return in the future.
