If you're a train enthusiast, you might already know about this service that most people don't: ① When transferring at designated transfer stations within the Tokyo Metro, if you transfer outside the ticket gates within 60 minutes, it's free (both tickets and IC cards). ② When transferring at designated transfer stations between the Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway using a paper transfer ticket, if you transfer outside the gates on the same day, it's unlimited and free (but be careful, with an IC card it's only free within 60 minutes). I recently saw this on TV and decided to try out the second option. This time, I planned to travel from Shinjuku Station on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line, get off at Azabu-Juban Station on the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line, spend over an hour there, then transfer to the Toei Oedo Line at Azabu-Juban Station, and finally get off at Shinjuku Station on the Toei Oedo Line. With an IC card, if you get off at a transfer station and spend more than 30 minutes, you need to buy a transfer ticket for 280 yen. I transferred from the Marunouchi Line to the Namboku Line at Yotsuya, then passed through the gates at Azabu-Juban Station and successfully received the transfer ticket. I planned to have breakfast at a bakery, but it was still closed, so I went to the nearby Ueshima Coffee Shop instead. It had a retro look with the facade of the previous store preserved. I sanitized my hands, ordered the "Morning D Set" (590 yen) with unsweetened milk coffee, paid with my credit card, and received a drink and a numbered ticket. The morning plate arrived in 6 minutes, with a small thick slice of buttered toast and a boiled egg. The soft-boiled egg didn't have salt as it was a seasoned egg. The warm coffee with plenty of milk warmed up my cold body. The buttered toast was delicious with a hint of sweetness. The seasoned egg was soft, making it difficult to peel the shell. I took a bite of the seasoned egg with salt. After spending an hour and a half in Azabu-Juban, I entered the Toei Oedo Line at Azabu-Juban Station and successfully exited at Shinjuku Station on the Toei Oedo Line. With this trick, you can travel between Shinjuku and Azabu-Juban for only 140 yen one way or 280 yen round trip!!! If you use an IC card normally, the minimum round trip fare is 398 yen, so you can save at least 118 yen. Give it a try.
