It's so hot, isn't it? Well, it's summer after all! I had to go to Ikebukuro for some errands on my day off last Friday, and let me tell you, just walking around made me sweat like crazy! Anyway, I finished my errands and it was lunchtime, so I searched on Tabelog for a lunch spot in the Ikebukuro area, and I found this place called Abura Soba Suzunoki. It's located across the street from Ikebukuro West Exit, and if you walk towards Yomemachi Street, you'll find it on your right. I arrived at the restaurant around 11:22. As soon as I entered, I felt the cool air conditioning, which was a relief in this heat! Inside, there was a ticket machine on the right side. Apparently, this place has been featured on SUSURU TV before. Since it was my first time there, I followed the top-right rule and selected the Spicy Mazesoba with Extra Noodles and Extra Rice (1,090 yen). I think I was the first customer. The interior had counter seats lined up, and there was a rice cooker placed on the right side. Once I sat down and handed my ticket to the staff, they brought me a bowl for the extra rice. I guess you can help yourself to rice from the rice cooker behind the counter. While I waited, I looked at the "Suzunoki's Rules!" posted in front of the counter seats. The table condiments included garlic, powdered cheese, chili oil, vinegar, mayonnaise, pepper, spicy sauce, and more. It seemed like you could customize your dish to your liking with these condiments. Interesting concept! About 10 minutes later, my dish arrived. The noodles were topped with cheese, fried garlic, minced onions, green onions, mayonnaise, and spicy miso. I mixed everything thoroughly from the bottom of the bowl. There was about one-third of soup at the bottom of the bowl. I dug in and it was delicious! The thick noodles had a good chew to them, and despite being abura soba, it wasn't too oily. It was incredibly easy to eat and so tasty! I slurped it all up in no time. The melted cheese coating the noodles, the crunchy texture of the onions – it was a fun eating experience. As I was about one-third through, I added a teaspoon of grated garlic, chili oil, and vinegar, and the flavor became even more intense. I devoured the noodles in no time, and then I went to get some extra rice. Poured the remaining soup over it – heavenly! It was so delicious. Maybe the soup was a bit more than usual for abura soba, but I think it was for the extra rice. I finished it all in no time. The garlic and chili oil must have made me sweat even though the air conditioning was on full blast! It was a great meal. After leaving the restaurant, even though it was supposed to be hot outside, it felt refreshing.
