When you think about it, Tsukiji Market used to have a variety of affordable Japanese set meal restaurants like "Uo Shiki," "Katou," and "Takahashi," where you could enjoy fish dishes with your choice of small side dishes. However, after the move to Toyosu, while there are plenty of sushi restaurants, "Uo Shiki" did not relocate, "Katou" was succeeded by "Ikinoya" which offers high-priced set meals and seafood bowls, and "Takahashi" transformed into a high-end course meal restaurant focusing on reservations. It seemed like the traditional Japanese set meal restaurants were disappearing. This particular restaurant, initially known for its "tempura set meal" and "tempura rice bowl" after the move to Toyosu, has recently expanded its menu to include more variety. I ordered the Saury pickled in rice bran grilled set meal, with side dishes such as spicy cod roe, cucumber pickled in rice bran, tempura of shirako (milt), and tempura of oysters. The Saury pickled in rice bran had a robust flavor that complemented the rice well, while the cucumber pickled in rice bran was consistently good. The seasonal dishes of shirako tempura and oyster tempura were particularly outstanding. The contrast between the crispy batter and the creamy texture of the shirako was truly delightful. Depending on your menu selection, you can also opt for a sashimi platter or a tempura-focused meal, allowing you to enjoy a fulfilling Japanese set meal based on your mood for the day. The only downside is that during peak hours with a lot of drinking customers, the turnover rate may slow down. However, you can either patiently wait by writing your name on the waiting list or aim for an earlier dining time. Personally, I find that you can enjoy a much more affordable and delicious meal here compared to going out of your way to eat mediocre sushi at about 60% of the other restaurants.

Tempura Donburi for ¥1800 per person. Located next to the very popular sushi restaurant "Yamato" in Tsukiji Market. They offer a wide variety of tempura including shrimp, kisu fish, conger eel, sweetfish, eggplant, bitter melon, pumpkin, and more. The tempura exceeded expectations, but it comes at a somewhat higher price. The fried tofu and vegetable tempura we chose as a side dish for the whale meat sashimi that my family ordered was surprisingly generous in portion, almost like a main dish. When we entered the restaurant, it was not crowded, but by the time we left, there were 2-3 groups waiting, so it seems like getting a table quickly is a matter of luck.

Arrived around 11:30 on a regular Friday. The restaurant was full, with one person from a foreign country waiting on the bench outside. They disappeared after a while, so I was able to enter the restaurant in about 10 minutes. Inside, there were a couple of groups of tourists from Asia and some people who seemed to work at the market. I chose the tempura set meal and a small bottle of Sapporo Red Star beer from the menu on the whiteboard on the wall. The set meal could be upgraded to a large portion for free, so I went for the large portion without hesitation. I received the beer before the food, which was a relief after walking from Mita Station, crossing the Rainbow Bridge, and walking to Toyosu in over 35-degree heat. The beer paired with pickles as an appetizer made the beer go down smoothly even without any food. As I enjoyed the beer, the food was served. The server explained the contents of the tempura for the day. The hot tempura complemented the cooled-down body from the air conditioning and beer. Each tempura was crispy and delicious, and I was glad I went for the large portion. I finished the meal with the pickles that came with the set meal, leaving with a refreshed palate.

I visited for lunch. I wasn't in the mood for raw fish, so I wanted to eat grilled fish and was looking for it in Toyosu. It seemed like there weren't many options for grilled fish, except for one place in Block 6 and the Tempura restaurant in Block 5. The latter had more reasonable prices. You can choose a set meal for 1300 yen, and for the side dishes you can choose from three options: whale sashimi, spicy cod roe, or whitebait with grated radish. I chose the grilled Pacific saury set meal and the recommended whale sashimi for the side dish. The Pacific saury had soft bones that didn't poke you at all, and there were very few small bones, or maybe none at all. It was delicious and I highly recommend it. It was my first time trying whale sashimi, and it didn't have any fishy smell. It had a nice kick of ginger, and it felt like I was eating Yukhoe (Korean beef tartare). It was delicious! The restaurant seems to be known for its tempura, but I also recommend trying their grilled fish!

Second visit. Last time I had whale sashimi set meal. Despite being a tempura restaurant, I didn't have tempura, so I went to eat it this time. Arrived on Saturday around 8:50. The neighboring "Yamato Sushi" still had a long line. I thought it would be relatively empty, but there were 7 groups waiting! (Many groups of 2-4 people) This was going to be quite a wait. Finally entered at 10:00. It took almost an hour. Stayed true to my initial plan and ordered tempura. - Tempura set meal 1,800 yen, extra rice. It was quite crowded that day. Tempura rice bowl was sold out for a while. Arrived 15 minutes later. This time, there were bamboo shoot and sweetfish tempura, as explained. There were also 2 shrimp, smelt, scallop, pumpkin, eggplant, and bitter melon. All had a crispy coating. The tempura dipping sauce with grated daikon radish went well with them. I ordered extra rice, but I should have gone for a large serving this time. Truly delicious tempura from a tempura restaurant. Thank you for the meal.

Visit on Saturday at 7:43. Next door, "Yamato Sushi," still has a long line as usual. This time, I decided to try this restaurant that I've been curious about. In addition to tempura, the whale sashimi set meal seems to be a specialty. There was no line outside the restaurant, so I was able to enter and sit down right away. Inside, there were three couples. I ordered the following set meal: - Whale sashimi set meal with small side dishes - 1,300 yen. They offer a free upgrade to a large portion of rice, but I opted for a regular size this time. The set used to come with tempura, but when I visited, it came with small side dishes. You can choose from 4 different small side dishes: 1) Whale sashimi 2) Shredded dried fish with grated radish 3) Spicy cod roe 4) Deep-fried tofu with broth. I chose option 2, shredded dried fish with grated radish. It arrived in about 7 minutes. The whale sashimi was meaty yet refreshing. The freshly grated ginger and garlic complemented it well. I wish I could have eaten more of it. The shredded dried fish was fluffy and paired well with the grated radish underneath. It was a substantial portion but still refreshing. The rice portion was quite generous even in the regular size. The miso soup had plenty of clams in it. Everything was delicious. I was also intrigued by the tempura that other customers were eating. I'll have to come back for the tempura next time. Thank you for the meal.

I woke up early and went to Toyosu Market on May 19th (Friday). The tempura was delicious. They had tempura of sweetfish, but the sweetfish was small. It might still be a little early for the season, right? My companion had whale sashimi and mentaiko. He chose the mentaiko for me because he knew I wanted to try it. Thanks to him, we finished all the leftover rice. The mentaiko was so fluffy! I've never had such soft mentaiko before! I want to go back to eat that mentaiko again. Thank you for the meal.

I visited during lunchtime on a regular day. The restaurant is located on the first floor of the market's produce building, and it's a bit hard to find if it's your first time, but I suppose it's understandable since it's inside a wholesale market. There were people ordering maguro (tuna) set meals and nitarikujira (grilled whale) set meals, so I was torn, but I ended up ordering the tempura set meal. Everything was freshly fried and delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Toyosu Market is different from Tsukiji in that it doesn't have a wide variety of dining options, so it can be boring for those who are not there for shopping. However, this restaurant is different. I tried the tempura bowl with an addition of whale meat. It's said to be minke whale, but the taste is similar to tender bluefin tuna. In other words, it's very delicious. There is hardly any unique smell of whale meat. (Sometimes there is) I almost forgot, but the tempura bowl is also delicious.

Many people couldn't find this place when Toyosu was newly opened. Foreign tourists are also coming back, and on this day, there were 10 people waiting in line by 11 o'clock, with 7 of them being foreigners. It seems like they particularly like the whale sashimi, as they ordered it individually, served with sesame oil and it goes well with beer. Next, we had a mixed tempura plate with fresh young ayu. We also added an abalone tempura, which was small but delicious. The whale sashimi with shellfish and watercress was especially tasty.

"Tenbo" is located on the 1st floor of Block 5 of the Tsukiji Market in Tokyo's Toyosu Market. Established around the 10th year of the Showa era, just like Tsukiji Market, this tempura restaurant moved to Toyosu. I tried their "Tendon" dish, which comes with miso soup for 1,500 yen. It consists of tempura of smelt, sandfish, shrimp, eggplant, seaweed, onion, and more on top of rice. The tempura is hot and delicious, with ingredients like fresh smelt capturing the essence of each item inside the crispy batter. In addition to tempura, another specialty of this restaurant is whale sashimi. So, I also tried the "Whale Sashimi" for 700 yen. As expected from a restaurant inside the market, the freshness of the whale sashimi was outstanding. It is a popular dish even among the wholesalers.

■Restaurant Information When people come to Toyosu, they usually eat seafood or sushi. However, personally, I think the Chinese cuisine, fried food, curry, and tempura in the area are also of high quality. Today, I visited "Tenbo," a tempura restaurant. I ordered whale sashimi, which is said to be delicious. You can choose one small side dish from four options, and rice comes in a large serving for free. ■Menu Ordered - Nitari Whale Sashimi Set: ¥1300 - Flat Scallop: ¥750 I was seated and the food arrived in about 15 minutes. The nitari whale sashimi was easy to eat without any strong taste. The freshness of whale meat is crucial, and the color was beautiful, indicating its high quality. The two large pieces of mentaiko (spicy cod roe) were also delicious and complemented the rice well. I also ordered the flat scallop, which is usually served wrapped in seaweed at sushi restaurants. This was my first time trying tempura, and I was pleasantly surprised by its unique texture. The prices are not touristy, and the cost performance is good. This is one of the restaurants I personally recommend. Check out my Instagram account "のんある男子の東京ランチ飯" with 70,000 followers for more delicious food recommendations in Tokyo and nationwide! - The tempura rice bowl is topped with sweet and savory soy sauce glaze-dipped shrimp tempura, conger eel, shiitake mushrooms, broccoli, and other classic ingredients. The fresh taste of the vegetables stands out, and the soy sauce glaze is well-balanced without overpowering the flavors of the ingredients. While it may not be surprising or unique, it is a solid tempura bowl that you could enjoy on a regular basis. - The sliced raw whale meat dish resembles energetic and refreshing flavors similar to tuna, with a clean and pleasant taste. The addition of ginger, which helps eliminate any fishy smell, feels unnecessary due to the excellent freshness of the meat. You can really feel the quality of ingredients from Toyosu Market shining through in dishes like this. Rating: ★ Excellent ◎ Very delicious ○ Delicious △ Hmm...

I revisited "Tenbo" at Toyosu Market. I ordered the "Minke Whale Sashimi Set Meal" on this day, and the whale sashimi here is really delicious. I am not from the generation that eats whale meat, but I occasionally had it in Osaka as part of oden ingredients. The tempura came with tempura sauce, and halfway through, they turned it into a homemade tempura rice bowl for me. This is my favorite restaurant at Toyosu Market. Thank you for the meal♪

On the second day in Tokyo, since the hotel I stayed at did not include breakfast in the reservation, I decided to head to Tsukiji Market. A friend recommended this restaurant to me the day before. It was the first day of business for the new year at Tsukiji Market, so it was quite crowded. I found out that there were separate entrances for the general public and market workers. I took the route from the deck outside the Tsukijishijo Station to enter the market and arrived at the restaurant. I originally planned to go to the sushi restaurant next door, but they had already stopped taking orders by 8 am. So I ended up going to this restaurant instead. I ordered the Tuna Set Meal for 1,500 yen, which included a variety of tuna cuts and tempura with shrimp, small fish, lotus root, seaweed, and pumpkin. The tempura was crispy and freshly fried. I chose to have it with tempura dipping sauce. The meal also came with miso soup with clams, pickles, and rice. While I was eating, the gentleman I had been waiting with paid for my meal as well before leaving. It was a delicious and satisfying meal.

I haven't used the Yurikamome line in a long time. So, I decided to go to Toyosu Market. They don't sell fish or anything for general consumption, so there's no reason to come all the way here. While thinking about what to eat while on the move, sushi, ramen, donburi... Oh, Toyosu, that place maybe. Checking recent reviews, oh my! They now offer my favorite dish! Alright, decision made! So, off to "Tenbo" in Toyosu Market! The swaying noren curtain at the front of the three food stalls on the 1st floor of the produce building. It's still there, looking lively! The sushi restaurant seems to have quite a wait, but I managed to get in here smoothly. I was guided to a seat facing the wall for one person. While set meals are good, I like to have them fry it here. Looking at the menu, there it was! The "whale sashimi" that I was looking for! I ordered it as a single item, with a rice set, and the tempura was the usual shrimp. And, the best part of the season is coming up, oysters! While sipping tea, let's wait leisurely. The customers seem to be a mix of market workers and regular customers, but it's a nice atmosphere in this restaurant. Alright! Here it comes, my whale sashimi with rice set & shrimp and oyster tempura!!! It's a luxurious combination, even for me! The whale is called "nitari whale," and I was instructed to eat it with soy sauce. It looks soft and glossy! I drizzled soy sauce on it and took a bite! Oh, it's so delicious! Soft, no hint of fishiness, and the unique flavor and sweetness of whale are incredibly delicious! The rice is also delicious, so I keep eating! Let's start with the oyster tempura! There are two sizes, big and regular. Of course, I'll start with the big one! When taking a photo, my hand holding the chopsticks trembles because it's quite heavy. I took a bite! Oh, it's so delicious! The creamy umami-filled oyster spreads in my mouth from the crispy batter! This is the taste of oysters! The shrimp has a strong shrimp flavor, firm and slightly rare inside, and it's also delicious! The rice goes so well with everything! The miso soup is small but filled with plenty of clams, which makes me happy! It was quite challenging to finish, but it was a lunch full of happiness! Thank you for the meal!

The tempura here is delicious in every season, so I want to come back here regularly. I also tried the rare raw whale meat, which was surprisingly tasty with a strong ginger flavor. The tempura assortment included kinusaya, myoga, delicious megochi, maitake mushrooms, eggplant, scallops, and of course, the always satisfying shrimp. Thank you for the feast!

I had been to Tsukiji Market a few times, but after it changed to Toyosu Market, my living area shifted to the Tokai region and I never had the chance to visit Toyosu Market. It wasn't a place I needed to go to for work, so I never went. However, this time, I was asked to fill in for a friend who loves food, so I decided to go. Toyosu is quite spacious, but I had decided to end my visit with sushi, reminiscing about Tsukiji. When I checked the electronic display early in the morning, it said that Tenbou was crowded, but when I visited a little later, I was able to get in easily. I immediately ordered the whale set meal with tempura. The whale was tender and had no fishy smell at all, it was delicious. The tempura was also delicious, with the flavor sealed in the crispy batter. There's no way it wouldn't be delicious. Thank you for the meal.

I went to "Tenbo" in the vegetable building of Toyosu Market for breakfast. During the time when the news was talking about how expensive Pacific saury was, I naturally ordered the Pacific saury set. I enjoyed the tempura with both tempura dipping sauce and salt. The selection of tempura at the market is always delicious and in season. The megochi fish had a fluffy texture and tasted great even without any seasoning. While I usually prefer salt-grilled Pacific saury, the concentrated flavor of the grilled open saury really complemented the rice. It was another delicious breakfast today. Thank you for the meal!

I visited an tempura restaurant in Tsukiji Market for lunch before going to an exhibition at Tokyo Big Sight. The restaurant was located in the fruit and vegetable market building, and I ordered a regular tempura bowl for 1500 yen. The tempura consisted of two prawns, smelt, young sweetfish, bell pepper, onion, and seaweed. The tempura was crispy with a light batter and not too thick. The prawns, young sweetfish, and sweet onions stood out in terms of flavor and texture. The miso soup with clams was also delicious. Overall, I was very satisfied with the meal and would like to try the set meal with tempura next time. The restaurant had a down-to-earth atmosphere despite being located in the new market facility.

Located on the first floor of the Aogiri Building, this restaurant used to be at the far end of Building 6 in Tsukiji. They offer various types of tempura bowls, tempura set meals, and a few tuna menu items. The entrance has a small table next to it, with counter seats lining the narrow shop. There is a noticeable smell of oil inside the shop, so be prepared when entering. The current location in Toyosu is more spacious and clean compared to the Tsukiji days. The menu includes not only tempura and tempura set meals, but also grilled fish set meals like mackerel and salted salmon. The addition of "tempura included" to these set meals shows that this is a true tempura restaurant. After some contemplation, I decided to try the whale sashimi set meal for 1,200 yen. The meal came with whale sashimi, rice, miso soup, pickles, and unexpectedly, a tempura assortment including shrimp, conger eel, pumpkin, eggplant, and green pepper. The whale sashimi was surprisingly delicious, with a hint of sesame oil and ginger to enhance the flavor. The tempura was also well-fried, and paired perfectly with rice. The miso soup with large clams added a comforting touch to the meal. The value for money at 1,200 yen for this meal is exceptional, making it one of the best deals in Toyosu Market. I am already thinking about coming back to try the whale sashimi and tempura again, as well as the tempura bowl. The taste of whale sashimi was so good that I wonder if the improved handling of whale meat post-capture is a factor. If anyone has more information on this, please let me know. Overall, a satisfying meal.
