Tomorrow's Tokyo Marathon, the master of the izakaya we frequent is participating. As a pre-race celebration, our group of 7 friends visited a chain izakaya that turned out to be quite outrageous. The master had made a reservation for exactly 4 o'clock, as we had been wanting to try it out for a while. The specialty here is the "Baka" (fool) labeled big-sized jockeys of sake and various challenge menu items like oversized dishes. We started with a toast with the dumbbell-like heavy jockeys. The appetizer of meat and bean sprouts was surprisingly good, even though the bean sprouts were warm. Our plan was to try the Baka Karaage and Baka Yakisoba, but there were more Karaage pieces than expected, so we had to give up on the Yakisoba. While waiting for the Karaage, we had chilled tomatoes and cold tofu to pass the time. The Karaage took longer to prepare than we thought. Finally, the boat-shaped platter of Karaage arrived, and we were ecstatic and amazed... there were easily 50 pieces, if not close to 80. Each half of the boat had Karaage with different flavors, one with a sweet and savory sauce, and the other half with soy sauce. The taste was surprisingly good, not overwhelming at all. We enjoyed them with the shichimi spice, mayonnaise, and sauce on the table. With 7 of us, the quantity was manageable. "I ate 10!" "You barely ate any!" "I only had 5..." A debate on meeting the quota erupted among us (laughs). We lively and happily continued to eat the Karaage. At the bottom of the boat, under the Karaage, there were crunchy fried noodles resembling kata-yakisoba, which were a good snack but we also ordered the "Chibachan Salad" (Baka), which had the same topping and was also super-sized, so we started to get a bit tired of it... This salad had a soft-boiled egg in the middle, which we mixed in to eat it like carbonara. However, the Karaage boat platter was only around 1,300 yen, so it was surprisingly cheap. Is this izakaya's business doing okay? Even if you're not foolish, you can choose regular-sized jockeys of sake. There were a lot of young customers, and the 7 of us from the Showa generation felt a bit out of place. As we were leaving, we were shocked to see something. At a nearby table, there were two women challenging the same Baka Karaage boat platter. There are some tough people out there in the world.
