It's an orthodox little sushi shop that evokes a sense of nostalgia. I bought a half-size futomaki for 259 yen including tax. The price and portion size are just right. The sushi rice has a good balance of vinegar flavor. The ingredients like dried gourd strips, cucumber, sweet rolled omelette are all traditional. A simple futomaki roll. In the end, I find myself feeling comforted by this kind of familiar taste.

Kozou Sushi offers a special deal on Saturdays where hand-rolled sushi is only 100 yen each. It's a great service that I appreciate. There used to be Kozou Sushi restaurants everywhere, but now there are fewer, so I'm grateful that there is one in Suginami. The Kozou Sushi in Hiroshima has closed down, so I'm relieved. Today's hand-rolled sushi options include Negitoro, Salmon, Mix, and Sea Chicken. It's economical to be able to fill up your stomach for only 400 yen. I'm thankful for that. I wonder if I'll go to Kozou Sushi again next Saturday!

I saw Kohezushi on my way to SONKA along Itsukaichi Street. It's been a while since I last saw it. I decided to stop by on my way back from the bakery because I thought if I didn't buy it when I saw it, it might disappear. When it comes to Kohezushi, the batter is 300 yen. I love the batter. Also, it was hand-rolled sushi day on the day I went, so I bought two hand rolls for a total of 500 yen. I heard that the ikura hand roll, which is usually 180 yen, was only 100 yen, so I had to buy it. I also chose a toro-taku roll. I remember that the batter used to be 140 yen in the past, but that was for a half portion. Now the half portion is 150 yen, and it hasn't increased in price for many years, which is great. The mackerel in the batter was thin, and while I thought it was decent for the price, the portion size was impressive for 300 yen. The hand rolls didn't have a lot of filling, which was a bit disappointing. But I remembered that the quality of Kohezushi has been like this for a long time. I used to buy Kohezushi a lot 30 years ago. Nowadays, you can find tastier sushi at conveyor belt sushi restaurants, but Kohezushi is still useful when you just want to eat sushi cheaply.

When my friend came over, we planned to order two servings of the summer special platter with 40 pieces each. After watching the Awa Odori in Koenji the day before, we were able to order 80 pieces for around 5000 yen. Each of us was full after eating 40 pieces. My friend couldn't finish and left 6 pieces. I sent my friend off and quickly ate the leftovers since they were raw. Even though I was still full, I managed to eat them but couldn't move afterwards. It was quite a funny situation!

The traditional Kozosushi has a modest taste and menu, but is well-known for its reasonable prices and great service. I called to order the limited-time Oogansha Noryo Mori (18 pieces for 1078 yen) and picked it up. There were a few kid-friendly items included, but overall it was satisfying. I made some udon noodles to go with it, creating a simple yet luxurious Japanese meal. It was very calming. I will definitely visit again.

From Shinjuku, head down towards Koenji and then enter Gokokuji Street. On the left side around Matsunoki, you'll find Kodomo Sushi with the trademarked character Hachimaki Tasuke bowing. "I'm too lazy to cook dinner now." Should I stop by? Their single serving options come in three tiers: regular Yayoi, higher-grade Satsuki, and top-grade Special. You can choose between 8, 10, or 12 pieces for Yayoi and Satsuki. The popular choice among average Japanese folks might be the 10-piece Satsuki for 830 yen. Since it's just before payday for us, I'll go with the Yayoi (10 pieces) for 590 yen with 463 calories. The experienced chef says, "I'll make it right away. Please wait." I left my phone in the car, so I casually observe the chef's work. He swiftly prepares the sushi, taking the toppings from a container and molding them skillfully. He adds the green onion and tuna. "Thank you for waiting." Quick service, a nice touch for takeout sushi. Back home, it's sushi party time. Sweet shrimp, boiled shrimp, salmon roe, tuna and green onion, squid, tuna, squid, salmon, octopus, and tamagoyaki - 10 pieces in total. The toppings are thin, but the price is fair and comforting. The vinegar rice is slightly sticky and soft, not quite to my liking. Oh well, it's still satisfying. Full and content. Thank you for the meal.

Before the 100 yen conveyor belt sushi became popular, the first place that came to mind for buying sushi cheaply to take home was Kozu Sushi. However, I haven't seen it around lately. According to Tabelog, out of a total of 458 stores, only 121 have been reviewed, with only five stores receiving a significant number of reviews, and the rest having fewer reviews. There are over 300 stores without any reviews, so it doesn't seem to be of much interest or worth discussing. Now, the image character for Kozu Sushi is "Hatamaki Tasuke." Kozu Sushi (formerly Sushi Hanakan) is a takeout sushi place that also operates standing sushi bars like Hatamaki Tasuke, Chazuki, Kanda Ichiban Sushi, and ramen shops Menya Kozu. It seems that Kozu Sushi has an equal number of directly managed and franchise stores. Rumor has it that at the Matsunoki store, the operation is handled by just one man, giving off a strong franchise vibe. The menu at the Matsunoki store includes various original sets, and I carefully checked to make sure there was no salmon in them as I don't like salmon. The order should be made fresh, but if it's ready now, you can take it home right away. I decided on the King's Special, as I was in a hurry. The Matsunoki store's original King's Special costs 690 yen, tax included. Checking the website, it seems that this weekend is the King's Special Fair, but wait, isn't the Matsunoki store's original cheaper and has one more piece than the special? They are really competing with the directly managed stores. The thinly sliced fish that used to look cheap now appears more transparent, giving a sense of value for money. It's great to see the face of the person making the sushi, rather than just the big chain behind it. Keep up the good work, man! (I didn't confirm whether it was a franchise store until the end, just assumed and talked about it)

Located about 500m from Shin-Koenji Station on the Marunouchi Subway Line, along Gokokuji-dori, is a takeout sushi chain store well-known as "Kozu Sushi" Matsunoki branch. I had previously visited the Kozu Sushi Nakano Minamiguchi branch in Nakano, so I decided to try their sushi here. Inside the store, there were elderly women serving customers and an elderly man working in the back, so it seemed to be a two-person operation. I looked at the menu and ordered the "Sazanami 10 pieces" (tax included 860 yen) and the "Saba Stick Sushi Half" (tax included 210 yen). Although there is a 12-piece option for Sazanami, I chose the 10-piece because I wanted to try the pressed mackerel sushi. The order was prepared quite quickly, similar to fast food service, which was impressive. The lady at the store was polite and friendly in her manner of speaking. I took the sushi home and tried it. The Sazanami set included red tuna, scallop, salmon, squid, tamago, horse mackerel, ikura cucumber gunkan, negitoro gunkan, engawa, and steamed shrimp. The freshness was decent, and at 86 yen per piece, it falls in between the 150 yen and 200 yen options at conveyor belt sushi restaurants. Comparing it to conveyor belt sushi, it seems to be a bit lacking in terms of size, but the rice portion seems to be more generous. Maybe the advantage is being able to enjoy it at home at your own pace? As for the Saba Stick Sushi, it was topped with kombu and had a good balance of flavors. At 70 yen per piece, it was quite satisfying. However, when comparing it to recent conveyor belt sushi options, it seems to fall short. Kozu Sushi is currently facing challenges, with some branches being converted into ramen shops. With the rise of quality conveyor belt sushi and supermarket sushi, the competition is tough. They may need to improve the quality or add some other value to stay competitive. I hope they continue to strive for success. Thank you for the meal.

We are a family of three, my wife, daughter, and myself. It's a bit of a hassle to carry the small sushi portions on a bicycle, so I opted for two large portions instead of the family size. The variety is great and it's quite filling, making it a good deal.

I went shopping in Koenji. I tried to finish everything nearby and return home quickly without wandering around unnecessarily. People's patience is also reaching its limit! I remembered there was a Kozosushi in Koenji, so I decided to check it out. To my surprise, it was closed. But after a short walk, I found another branch of Kozosushi in Koenji. I walked briskly towards it. It's been a while since I had sushi and I couldn't satisfy my craving. Kozosushi, which I rarely see these days, seems to have disappeared due to the many conveyor belt sushi chains opening up. Even the two stores in Tokorozawa that I used to frequent have closed. Finally, I arrived at the unmistakable Kozosushi with the sign of that little monk. When I was a child, I didn't know about conveyor belt sushi yet, so I was amazed when Kozosushi opened and I could buy sushi so cheaply. I decided to have it for dinner tonight and bought hand-rolled sushi. When I was a child, I didn't like raw fish much, so I always chose hand-rolled sushi. Today, I bought Toro-Taku, Mix, Squid Mentaiko, Beef, and Shrimp Mayo. They make it after you order. The staff, who seemed to be the owner, was very friendly. The taste of the seaweed seemed a bit different from the past, but it was still delicious. It was much better than the convenience store hand-rolled sushi, a nostalgic hand-rolled sushi. I sometimes crave it, so I would like to visit again! Thank you for the meal.

When I was a child, I used to occasionally buy "Kozosushi". The number of stores has decreased significantly over the years, and I had almost forgotten about it, but I happened to come across it in my car and felt nostalgic. I was in the western Tokyo area, having used a public bath and a cafe in the evening, so I wasn't very hungry. But I knew I would get hungry later in the night. So, we brainstormed and decided to get takeout on the way back. We thought that something like Kozosushi would be perfect for this situation. So, we searched for a Kozosushi place on my smartphone and visited one on the way home. When I was a child, this was where I had my first experience making hand-rolled sushi. So, we decided to get one hand-rolled sushi roll each and some Kozosushi. This place is similar to Hotto Motto, where they can make sushi for you even if it's not displayed in the showcase. We bought 3 pieces of Inari sushi and a pack of 4 futomaki rolls. Surprisingly, there were no nori rolls available. We also got shrimp mayo hand rolls and tuna hand rolls, which I have been familiar with since I was a child. Although they also offer nigiri sushi, we didn't feel like having raw fish that day. I think this choice was more satisfying for us at Kozosushi. When we got back home and opened the hand rolls, it was a bit tricky to unwrap the film, unlike at convenience stores. The rice was a bit loose, probably because they were freshly made, but the hand rolls were delicious. The futomaki rolls had a strong nori aroma, and the Inari sushi was also tasty. Nowadays, there is a place called Sushi Hanakan, but I don't know the origin of the name. Kozosushi is the go-to place when in need. We enjoyed it. Thank you for the meal!

On the way back from Nishitokyo, I decided not to stop anywhere so I could watch "Hanzawa Naoki" in real time! (lol) I thought about getting some takeout, but at this time, there weren't many options available. Suddenly, I thought of trying out "Kozou Sushi". I got one piece of "Sukeroku" and one hand-rolled sushi each. It was really cheap, that's the main point. It might be even cheaper than a convenience store. I was surprised by how small the hand-rolled sushi was, but in a way, it was just right. Overall, I feel like it might be a bit inferior to convenience store sushi, especially in terms of taste. Well, convenience stores do have delicious inari sushi, after all.
