Chofu meal series #250. My friend planned an early birthday celebration for me, so we made a reservation at Poku Poku, a place I've been curious about for a while. The restaurant is located on the 1st floor of a building in between Chofu Station's central and east exits, tucked away in a slightly hidden spot that seems to blend in with the neighboring Yuyake restaurant, giving off a cozy, hidden gem vibe. Inside, it's your typical creative izakaya setup with a counter and table seating. We arrived at 6:30 pm and the place was almost full. The staff, a mix of young male and female part-timers in the front and a male head chef and what seemed like a male employee in the kitchen, were all friendly and welcoming. We ordered the Poku Poku standard 10-piece set, today's sashimi trio, simmered motsu, potato salad, Hoppy white set, 2 medium beers, 2 shochu on the rocks, and 2 oolong highballs. The 10-piece skewer set included pork loin, chicken tenderloin with yuzu pepper, eringi mushroom, tuna with green onions, and mochi cheese with mentaiko, each with a fine, light breadcrumb coating. My personal favorites were the chicken tenderloin with yuzu pepper and mochi cheese with mentaiko. The simmered motsu, which came in a portion for two, was generous and arrived quickly, making it a good starter. The potato salad was smooth and creamy, with no lumps. We also tried the recommended sashimi trio, and each piece had a thick, satisfying cut and tasted delicious. As a fan of shochu, I was pleased with the wide variety available, both on the menu and off, making for an enjoyable experience. I would definitely want to come back again.
