1-29-11 Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo, Unagi Koyanagi. Established in 1926 (Taisho 15), this long-established eel restaurant was renovated in 2013. Located on Asakusa Chuo Street, it is known for its crispy grilled eel with a sweet sauce. Just a 5-minute walk from Asakusa Station, right next to Asakusa Public Hall. The first floor has counter and table seats, while the second floor has tatami seating for up to 30 people. Open from 11:30 to 15:00 (last order 14:30) and 16:00 to 21:00 (last order 20:30). Closed on Thursdays. It's lunchtime in Asakusa, and with so many tempting options, it can be hard to choose. Let's try a traditional eel restaurant and experience the food culture that has been passed down in Asakusa. Asakusa seems to have many eel restaurants, and we head to Koyanagi, a place that is nearby. Asakusa Chuo Street, with willow trees as a landmark. The aroma of grilled eel wafts from the storefront. It's still early, but the place is already bustling with customers. There is a counter seat that makes it easy for even solo diners to enter. The first floor has counter and table seats, while the second floor has a spacious tatami area. The "Unagi Ju" (eel rice bowl) with eel liver costs 3520 yen (including tax). Pickles and green tea are served, and the dish is ready in about 10 minutes after ordering. The eel rice bowl, with its vermilion color, exudes a delightful fragrance when opened. The sauce glistens attractively. The eel is tender and flavorful, with a perfect balance of sweetness and savory. The rice isn't drenched in sauce, allowing the flavor of the rice to shine through. There is a container of sansho pepper to sprinkle on top. Before we know it, the dish is empty. Menu prices include tax, with options like Unagi Ju Matsuba for 3520 yen, Unagi Ju Take for 2970 yen, and Shirayaki for 3650 yen. There is also Tori Ju for 1100 yen, and various side dishes like simmered eel liver and rolled omelette. Drinks range from draft beer (starting at 715 yen) to sake, shochu, and highballs. Seasonal recommendations like water pickled eggplant and edamame are available, as well as course menus tailored to your budget. The atmosphere of the restaurant is moderate, with a good balance of price and service. Asakusa is a vibrant area with many interesting shops and alleys to explore. I would love to come back for more discoveries, maybe a visit to an Edo Kiriko glassware store next time. Just leaving a note for myself.

I took a walk around Asakusa and Oshiage where the festival was lively, and had lunch. I went to this eel restaurant that I had been curious about for a while. Even if I lined up before 12 o'clock, I had to wait for about an hour because of the line. After waiting for an hour, the eel rice bowl, beer, liver simmered, and grilled liver were amazing. Eel is truly delicious.

The entrance is adorned with drooping willow trees, giving the restaurant a charming atmosphere. The seasonal eggplant was juicy and had a fruit-like sweetness that made it delicious enough to eat endlessly. The grilled chicken liver was fresh, tender, and melted in the mouth without any unpleasant smell. The loach egg soup had a gentle flavor, enhanced by sprinkling on some sansho pepper. The eel rice bowl, the star of the meal, was undeniably delicious. The eel was soft, perfectly thick, and expertly grilled to absorb the sauce, resulting in a rich and flavorful dish. The soup with liver was served as a side, and the Iichiko shochu in a stylish bottle had a smooth taste that further whetted the appetite.

The visit was after 2 pm. I had been thinking about "eel" since morning... but then I saw a sign at the entrance of the restaurant saying "Business hours start at 4 pm"! Seriously... I guess I have to wait... It was scorching hot outside, like a "calm after the storm"... waiting there was tough, so I wandered around the town! Thanks to that, I thoroughly enjoyed Asakusa! I returned to the restaurant at 3:45 pm. And immediately two groups lined up behind me! It looks like they will definitely open at 4 pm! I was the first customer to enter. The price for the eel dish was this! I drank draft beer while waiting for my dish. The dish arrived. Delicious! It was a fantastic dish! I was very satisfied.

The Bon holiday is over, and I'm back to work today. I'm having a hard time getting motivated. So, to boost my spirits, I decided to have some eel. I finished work on time and visited a restaurant. It was past 7 pm. The restaurant was almost full, but I was seated at the counter. I ordered the eel rice bowl for 3,850 yen, a mushroom soup for 220 yen, and a beer. I know it's going to be delicious, so I'm excited. It arrived after about 10 minutes. It looked beautiful and fluffy, with a Kanto-style preparation. It was delicious. Perfect. I'll come back again in a month. Thank you for the meal.

The fast-paced rotation of dishes made it difficult to savor the food slowly. The taste and portion size were average. The service was good. Perhaps it's more relaxing to visit at night.

This week, I decided to put my all into work, so I visited the restaurant around 7 pm on Monday. The place was almost full, but I was seated at a table that had just opened up. I ordered the eel rice bowl for 3,850 yen, which was quite reasonable. I was told to wait a bit, so I relaxed with a beer and pickles. The eel arrived in about 15 minutes. It was a Kanto-style eel, light and fluffy, which I enjoyed. The sauce was just right, not too much or too little. I didn't need to add anything. The taste was not too sweet either, almost perfect. The cost performance was also good, so I can see why this place is popular. I will definitely come back again.

My Taiwanese friend wanted to eat eel, so we came here. We arrived just after opening and there was a bit of a line, but we were able to get in easily around 1pm on a Saturday (last order at 2pm). We ordered the eel rice bowl set. The eel was plump and the rice was slightly firm, a good balance. Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but the amount of rice was just right and I was about 90% full. If I have the chance, I would like to visit here again.

Located near Asakusa Nakamise Street, close to the Gyoza no Ousama restaurant, this is a long-established eel restaurant founded in 1926. - Time of entry: Sunday at 4 pm - Even at this time, there were customers, about 40% full. - I sat at the counter seat. - Items ordered: - Eel rice box (takeout) for 2,970 yen - Eel liver for 110 yen Eel liver is not included in the eel rice box. If you want it, you need to choose eel liver or Nameko mushroom soup separately. I chose the refreshing eel liver. The eel was steamed fluffy and when picked up with chopsticks, it felt like it would fall apart. They sprinkle Sansho pepper on it. Delicious! The sauce was sweet and tasty. The eel liver had somen noodles and Mitsuba, making it refreshing. When I entered, I honestly wasn't very hungry, but I finished it all. By the time I left, there were reservation signs on 2 tables, so it seems better to make a reservation before going. Thank you for the meal~

I met up with a friend from afar in Asakusa and had lunch here. It was a holiday, so both this restaurant and others nearby were crowded, with a decent line outside. Since I couldn't make a reservation in advance and wanted to eat eel, I chose this place for the following reasons: - Prompt service: Despite being busy without reservations, this eel restaurant was quick in serving, had a second floor, and a decently sized dining area, making the turnover fast even with a line outside. Suitable for those with limited time. - Reasonable prices: Known for offering eel at a relatively affordable price in the Asakusa area. - Spacious, bright, and clean interior for a relaxing atmosphere: The restaurant was rebuilt in 2013, making it bright and clean. This restaurant, established in 1926, is a long-standing establishment of 97 years. However, there is another famous restaurant nearby that has been around for 162 years (since the first year of Bun'kyū era), which is now open only for lunch, with the landlady standing at the grill. The head chef, who used to beat a fan rhythmically with his hand while grilling, is fondly remembered. We started with eel sashimi, eel rolls, and beer. The dishes came out quickly, almost like fast-forwarding through a traditional eel restaurant experience. We had the largest eel bowl, "Matsu," for 3,520 yen, which I believe offers the best quality for its price compared to other eel restaurants nearby. Please see the photos with captions for what we had that day. After enjoying our meal with drinks and eel, we spent about 40 minutes, or maybe just 30 minutes, before leaving the restaurant. The rhythmic and lively atmosphere is part of what makes this place charming. Thank you for the meal. Memo: - Eel Bowl (Matsu): 3,520 yen - Eel Rolls: 1,320 yen - Eel Sashimi: 1,320 yen - Nameko Miso Soup: 220 yen - Ebisu New Origin Limited Edition Bottle: 880 yen x 2 - Cash only - Very fast service, perfect for those in a hurry.

First visit. This eel restaurant has been around for a long time. The food was delicious. The prices are unbelievably cheap! It's a bit worrying. The cost performance is too good, so I will definitely visit again. Personally, this is my number one eel restaurant. Next time, I will try the broiled eel. Thank you for the meal.

I went to Asakusa Temple. Half of the fun was looking forward to eating around the area. Despite the light rain, the crowds were huge, and many tourists retreated early. I gave up on the long line for the eel rice ball at a certain shop. Then I remembered there was an eel restaurant along the way and decided to try it. I ordered the eel rice bowl set with mushroom soup. Most people around me chose the bamboo set, is that the usual choice? Considering the price, the pine set was cheaper so I didn't hesitate. The eel was grilled crispy on the outside and tender inside. The sauce was slightly less sweet, making it less likely to cause indigestion. The mushroom soup was made with red miso, and I felt it paired well with the eel rice bowl. Considering the location and price, it can be clearly said that it is a cheap restaurant. If you are in Asakusa, definitely give it a try.

We started the year with eel at Ko Yanagi in Asakusa. We had eel rolls, chicken liver, yakitori, and grilled dishes with Akahoshi sauce, which was sweet like mitarashi dango. We were starting to feel full, so we passed on the liver sashimi. The eel bowl on bamboo was delicious. We drank a bit too much, so be careful with the bill as they only accept cash. Will definitely come back! (As of January 8, 2023)

On this day, after visiting Senso-ji Temple, I had eel for lunch at a restaurant called Koyanagi along Asakusa Central Street. I made a reservation in advance! The restaurant was established in 1926, so it's been around for 97 years now, I think. When I arrived at the restaurant, there was a long line of people waiting outside. But since I had a reservation, I only had to wait for a short while before being seated. This time, I was seated in the second-floor tatami room. Koyanagi is known for serving eel at a relatively reasonable price, and you can still enjoy eel at a relatively affordable price. I ordered the eel rice bowl (Matsu), eel liver, and non-alcoholic drink. The eel had a fluffy texture and a refined taste. Even elderly customers can enjoy the eel at this restaurant. The first eel of the year was delicious. Thank you for the meal!

On New Year's Eve, it is a tradition for me to visit Asakusa, buy fresh soba and tempura, make a shrine visit, and eat eel. For the past few years, I have been going to the same eel restaurant. The eel set meal costs ¥3520 and is delicious. I used to go right after they opened in the evening, but I started going during lunchtime last year to avoid overeating. The food is reasonably priced and very tasty. The liver sashimi is a must-try. The sesame sardines were not what I expected, more like canned sardines cooked in a savory sauce.

I made a reservation in advance and visited the restaurant! I wanted to eat something delicious with my brother in Asakusa, so we had delicious eel rice bowls at this restaurant! The liver dish doesn't come as a set with the eel rice bowl, so it's better to order it separately! The eel was so fluffy and warm, it went well with the rice ✨ The sauce was just right and really brought out the flavor of the eel, so I was very satisfied ♫ The restaurant is a bit small and the customers are close together, so it may not be ideal for those who want to eat slowly. However, the eel itself is delicious, so if you get hungry while exploring Asakusa, I recommend eating the eel rice bowl at this restaurant ( ^ω^ )

I visited this restaurant as I couldn't get a reservation at other popular eel restaurants like Inada or Iroha. We were able to get in without a reservation, but it seemed like the rest of the seats were reserved. If you want to go for sure, it seems like a reservation is necessary. I wanted to try the liver cooked in soy sauce, but they didn't have it, so I ordered the liver simmered in soy sauce instead. It was relatively light, but tasty. If you order the eel rice bowl, you need to order the liver separately as it doesn't come with it. It was nice to have somen noodles included. The special eel rice bowl wasn't anything extraordinary, but the eel was tender and quite delicious. The price is a little over 3000 yen, so the cost performance is not bad and I was able to satisfy my craving for eel to some extent. However, to be honest, it was a bit underwhelming. There are many eel restaurants that are more delicious, so you don't necessarily have to come to this restaurant specifically.

This is an old eel restaurant in Asakusa. You can eat delicious eel at a reasonable price. I ordered the Matsutake. It is a very large eel, cooked plump and very delicious. I think it's best to enjoy it slowly with Japanese sake.

I visited the restaurant for lunch on October 17, 2022. This is my second time visiting, as I also came in July. The restaurant has a tatami seating area on the second floor, and it can accommodate more customers than it looks from the outside. I ordered the eel rice bowl "Matsu" with extra rice, and the portion of rice was larger than expected. The sauce was not too strong and very delicious, so I finished it all. The staff were friendly, making it a pleasant meal on a Monday. I will definitely visit again. Thank you for the meal!

Visited on a holiday night in October 2022. The restaurant had a traditional appearance with a splendid exterior. Inside, there was an elderly lady in charge of the account books, adding to the retro atmosphere. I arrived just before 7:30 pm and there was no line. I ordered the following: - Eel over rice (Matsutake) for 3,520 yen. I learned that the difference between Matsutake and Shochiku lies in the eel and rice quantity. I thought there would be a long wait, but the food was served in about 10 minutes. The soy sauce flavor was a bit strong, so even though it was eel over rice, the sweetness was somewhat subdued. This was a pleasant surprise! Despite its appearance, the flavor was rich, and there was no unpleasant eel taste. The eel was tender and fluffy, with only a few bones to be mindful of. If you are sensitive to bones, be sure to chew carefully. As it is an old establishment, there was no background music, creating a somewhat unfamiliar silent atmosphere. Overall, it was a delightful meal!

Today, I went to Unagi Koyanagi in Asakusa. The entrance of the shop has a willow tree planted, in line with the shop's name. Established in 1926, it will soon be celebrating its 100th anniversary. It is a prestigious long-standing establishment. I planned to leisurely enjoy some eel over rice with pickles and a beer, but before I could finish my beer, the eel over rice arrived. Despite the high number of tourists in Asakusa, they must have prepared the eel in advance for the customers. Nonetheless, the eel was tender and delicious. Overall, it was a good experience.
