I have been living in Nakano for almost 30 years, and the izakaya that has been operating in this location all this time, "Orenchi," has closed down. It was vacant for a while, but at the end of November, a new restaurant called "Chikuzenya" opened here. It always seems to be busy whenever I pass by, so I was thinking of giving it a try. Today, I went out to the station area in the evening to get my eldest daughter's new glasses. We ended up deciding to eat out because we were running late, and my daughter and wife said they wanted to try Chikuzenya, so the three of us visited for the first time. We entered the restaurant at 7:40 pm, and the seats visible from the entrance were almost full. When we mentioned that there were three of us, they said, "Please wait a moment while we prepare a table," and after about 5 minutes, we were seated in a private booth at the back. We ordered a draft beer for 490 yen and a yuzu honey lemon drink for my daughter, who recently started drinking, for 430 yen. She said she doesn't like beer because it's bitter. When the drinks arrived, we placed our food order. From the yakitori section, we ordered grilled chicken liver with sauce for 80 yen each, grilled chicken white meat with sauce for 120 yen, grilled pork cartilage with salt for 150 yen each, grilled pork skirt meat with salt for 150 yen each, grilled chicken lower esophagus with salt and wasabi for 180 yen each, and from the grilled dishes section, we ordered grilled chicken meatball with cheese for 230 yen, grilled chicken thigh with green onion and salt for 120 yen each. In addition to the grilled dishes, we ordered simmered tripe for 350 yen, fresh clam with wasabi pickles for 380 yen, grated yam for 380 yen, and tomato cheese bake for 480 yen. We also ordered a regular-sized vegetable salad for 480 yen, as the staff advised us that the "idiot-sized salad" was too much for us. I was surprised when the salad arrived - it was piled high with vegetables like in a Jiro-style ramen! Following the staff's advice to stop at the regular size was a good call, as it was already a large portion. We added more beer, rice crackers, and GariGari candy along the way, and I finished off with the delicious fried rice for 480 yen. The grilled dishes were a bit overcooked and tough, but overall, the satisfaction matched the price. The staff's service was good, and the food came out promptly despite the busy crowd. I will definitely consider coming back in the future.
