Kisu (130 yen) + vegetables (130 yen) + shrimp and vegetable tempura (130 yen) + medium rice portion (150 yen) - Today, I decided to get lunch for my home telework near Shibakoen Station. The area around the "Nanamagari" crank-shaped alley lined with shops has many charming eateries. After browsing around, I ended up at a takeout-only tempura restaurant called "Tenko." I had been curious about this place for a while, but I heard that there is always a long line during lunchtime and the popular tempura items sell out before noon. Also, the photos of the tempura served on packed rice with sauce poured over didn't look very appealing to me, so I hadn't visited before. However, today, there was no line when I arrived after 1:30 pm. I thought they must be out of tempura by now, but to my surprise, they still had kisu, vegetables, shrimp and vegetable tempura, and egg omelet tempura in stock. So, I decided to give it a try! To order, you specify the amount of rice for the tempura bowl (small 200g for 100 yen, medium 300g for 150 yen, large 400g for 200 yen) and then choose your favorite tempura items. Without saying much, they packed the rice, poured the sauce, dipped the tempura in sauce, placed it on the rice, wrapped it in paper, and made it into a tempura bowl for me. I'll have the medium rice portion with kisu, vegetables, and shrimp and vegetable tempura, please. The total came to 540 yen, so I thought I would get 460 yen in change when I handed over a 1000 yen bill, but the lady said, "You're handsome, so here you go!" or something like that, and gave me 470 yen in change. Why? Oh well, let's head home quickly and open it up. Hmm... it looks just like I expected. The tempura soaked in sauce is placed on the rice, with pickled radish on the side. It's all brown food visually. Now, let's try the tempura first... Oh? This is delicious! The tempura batter, steamed by the rice steam, is crispy, and the perfectly balanced sauce, not too sweet or salty, has just the right amount soaked into it, creating a lingering taste. The tempura without the usual crunch is a different kind of delicious. Also, the amount of sauce on the rice is just right, not lacking in flavor but not making the rice soggy either, showing a wonderful balance. The kisu has a firm texture and is satisfying. The vegetable tempura is made of onions and carrots. The sweetness of the onions and the softness of the carrots complement each other well. Tempura dipped in sauce always goes well with rice, right? The shrimp and vegetable tempura, which looks like ground fish paste with small shrimp inside, is also delicious. It has just the right amount of saltiness and a good texture! Despite visiting near closing time, the tempura was not greasy at all, and the oil used was not heavy. For example, when I occasionally order rice and tempura at Marugame Seimen and make my own tempura bowl, I always end up feeling heavy (or rather, the oil becomes heavy and makes me go "Ugh..."), but this was not the case at all. The tempura and rice went down smoothly, and I finished it in no time. I thought 300g of rice might be a bit too much when I picked up the pack, but I ate it all without slowing down. The rice was cooked firm with plump grains. I really appreciate this quality because if the rice is mushy, my enthusiasm drops drastically. The generously cut pickled radish with a strong saltiness also plays a good supporting role. By the way, isn't 150 yen for 300g of rice ridiculously cheap? Some places charge around 300 yen for 150g of rice. So, I enjoyed it thoroughly and thank you for the meal. Yeah, I regret not coming here before due to the appearance, but this was a delicious B-grade tempura bowl. All the items I tried this time were great, but I might want to come earlier next time and try more items. A revisit is a must!
