In the early evening at a somewhat awkward time, many shops in Memory Lane were still closed, including the one I was aiming for. Feeling thirsty, I entered a shop that had just opened, even though there were no customers inside. The owner was prepared with an English menu, as foreign visitors started coming in one after another. It seems like inbound tourism is picking up again. Since Memory Lane is a tourist spot, I decided to leave soon after.

I often come to Shinjuku, but this time, I visited Shomben Yokocho for the first time. I decided to have a solo drink at the first place I saw that seemed welcoming. They greeted me warmly and I started with a bottle of Akahoshi. Nowadays, for each bottle of Akahoshi, you get a scratch card and I won a limited edition Akahoshi sticker label! I also ordered a few skewers of yakitori. The taste was left to the chef's recommendation. I also ordered my favorite, Hatsumoto, from the recommended board. The liver was seasoned with salt, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The teppo was glazed with sauce, offering a nice texture. The Hatsumoto was seasoned with salt, perfect for snacking. It was a quiet weekday night, with only one other group of customers. I saw a mysterious container with liquid-soaked root vegetables on the counter. I asked the chef about it and he explained it was "Yam Ginseng Sake, aged for 9 years. It's best served on the rocks, but it has an alcohol content of 45%. It's good for the body." I decided to try it on the rocks with water. The taste was bitter and strong, with a punch of alcohol. I couldn't finish it, so I ordered tsukune and grilled avocado as well. The grilled avocado was simple but perfectly cooked with a delicious sauce and salt seasoning. The Yam Ginseng Sake was strong and didn't seem to diminish in strength as I drank it. I finally managed to finish it with the help of water. Despite the challenging drink, it was an enjoyable experience at Shomben Yokocho in Shinjuku. I will definitely come back again!

Shinjuku gourmet! I tried another restaurant in Omoide Yokocho because the Hashigo Taisho looked good (lol). I had some sake here too! There were about three different kinds of simmered dishes, and I ordered the spicy one! It was not only spicy but also flavorful and delicious! The grilled chicken was thick and juicy! The potato salad had a bit too many carrots for me, who doesn't like carrots much, but the taste was good. The meal was just delicious, and the owner was very cheerful and fun. Personally, this is a restaurant I really like.

I had a little time to spare so I wandered around Shomben Yokocho (Omoide Yokocho) from 1830. The restaurant I wanted to go to had a long line, so I decided to try this place instead! There were a lot of foreigners, but I was prepared for that so it was okay! The turnover seemed quick as they hadn't set down the trays yet, but they cleared them up quickly. The atmosphere was great, just like with a glass of Hoppy! I ordered a black Hoppy! When I tried to place my order, they were busy and said, "Wait a minute!" I missed the timing. But they asked me later, so I ordered the grilled skewers of chicken tail, chicken liver, and chicken heart. I forgot to ask for salt, but it turned out fine with the seasoning they chose. It was the right choice. I ate them with miso and soy sauce. The miso sauce was delicious! When I mentioned that, they recommended a secret menu item, which I added along with chicken liver. It was so tasty! However, compared to other places I usually go to alone, it was a bit pricey. Maybe it's because it's in Shinjuku and there are a lot of foreigners, so the prices are higher... but the taste was great!

In July 2019, I went to a drinking session with friends in Shinjuku. We usually go to San-chome, so we decided to try out Omoide Yokocho for a change. We arrived around 5 pm. No greetings from the staff. Ordered bottled beers. The staff's attitude was so unfriendly that it felt uncomfortable. The skewers were delicious, but it was disappointing. We didn't stay for more than an hour because the atmosphere was unpleasant.

In late June 2019, I visited a hotel for the first time and enjoyed Chinese cuisine. After that, I headed excitedly to Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho, known for its Showa retro atmosphere. It was my first time there, and I was surprised by the large number of foreign tourists. Despite the rain getting heavier, people were enjoying sake and grilled pork skewers at the open-air stalls without a care in the world. I chose to enter a cozy-looking place called "Nogataya Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho Store." It had a counter and table seating for 12, creating a small but charming space. I had a medium-sized beer for 580 yen and ordered one grilled pork skewer each of tongue (salt), heart (sauce), white meat (sauce), and head (miso sauce), all priced at 160 yen each. The complimentary dish was a glass noodle salad, which seemed unnecessary at a place like this. Since they didn't ask, I left the choice of salt or sauce up to them. The head skewer with miso sauce had a perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness, truly delicious! As I was in Omoide Yokocho, I felt the urge to have another drink before leaving. Enjoying the atmosphere, I quickly finished my meal and bid farewell. Thank you for the delicious meal! Great experience!

I visited this place in Omoide Yokocho and ordered the "Salted Mandarin Sour" and the "Assorted 5 Skewers". The appetizer was a mix of pickles and vegetables. The food was served in about 10 minutes. Everything was cooked just right, and the miso sauce was delicious.

The shop owner is tough-looking but friendly, which makes the restaurant great. The yakitori was delicious. I saw they had hornet liquor so I'll try it next time I go.

Flow of Komine. It was around the 1930s with one previous customer. We sat in the farthest seat. Cheers with Akaboshi. Potato salad, cartilage, pig's head. Added a Hoppy set. Got quite drunk. Around 4000 yen for two people. Good value for money. Reasonable within the alley.
