This is an izakaya recommended by a senior on Tabelog who said, "It's really good!" The restaurant specializes in local fish from Hokuriku, but it originally started as a fish market, which is a somewhat unusual background for a restaurant. Upon further research, I found out that aside from the main store in Gotanda, there are also affiliated stores in Yokohama and other locations. Our visit to the restaurant, "Uoshun Hamamatsucho," was motivated by a desire to learn more about its unique qualities, as the Tabelog ranking as of R1.12 is currently 3.39 stars, indicating a moderate rating. When a fellow foodie, Mr. Ajikko, mentioned that he would be visiting Tokyo from Kyushu and suggested meeting up for drinks near Shinagawa, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to enjoy a night of drinking together. The visit took place on a weekday evening at 8 pm. We were led to the second floor with many private booths, where we were greeted by a friendly staff member. Mr. Yakitate!! Japan arrived shortly after, apologizing for the delay in check-in. He was a calm and pleasant gentleman with a warm smile, and we quickly struck up a friendly conversation. We started the evening with a toast of beer at Uoshun, and the staff recommended Hokuriku sake to complement our meal. The restaurant offers a variety of sake from Toyama, Ishikawa, and Fukui, and although the prices may seem high at first glance, the quality and presentation of each serving make it worth the cost. The sashimi was fresh and delicious, and the lunch sashimi set, priced at 1200 yen (tax included), was a great value. Personally, I found the Heshiko-stuffed mochi Isoyaki to be particularly interesting. Heshiko is a traditional dish from Hokuriku made by salting and fermenting fish like sardines, and the combination with mochi was surprisingly tasty. It paired well with cold sake and left a satisfying taste in the mouth. During the meal, we also had interesting discussions with other foodies, including Shokugeki no Soma, about various topics beyond just Tabelog reviews. Overall, the experience at Uoshun made me realize the importance of authentic reviews from real customers, and the value of honest feedback in the world of restaurant reviews.
