On February 11, 2021 (Thursday), on National Foundation Day, during lunchtime... I visited the "Uobei Higashikurume Store" again, a restaurant that I have been to many times. I only write articles about it when there are interesting sushi limited-time specials or unique topics at the restaurant.
Menu:
"Fatty Pacific Herring" - "The fat is spread throughout the body, and when sliced with a knife, the flesh turns white." This seems to refer to Pacific Herring.
Currently in Tokyo, there is a menu item that might make you think that not many people know about it - "Hatsubi Inari Menu." The nostalgic name caught my attention...
"Hatsubi Inari" - I immediately ordered it because I was intrigued by the name "Hatsubi," regardless of whether it was delicious or not. "Hatsubi" refers to the "first day of the horse in February." This year, it was on February 3rd (Wednesday). There are activities associated with Hatsubi...
As a child, on the eve of Hatsubi, we used to buy five-colored square flags, paste them together with glue, and prepare for calligraphy by grinding ink after dinner. It was like my own "Kakizome" (first calligraphy of the year) back then! When I was younger, I would write one piece, my father would write one, and my brother would write one. About 20 years ago, I started writing all three pieces myself. I remember writing "dedicated Inari Daimeijin" and the date and names of my family members at both ends. When I was younger, we were a family of nine (seven siblings), so it was quite a task to write everyone's names...
On the day of Hatsubi, we offered red rice, simmered dishes, and other offerings to Inari-san that my mother made. There was also fresh-fried tofu. I wonder if there was also mackerel? Or was that for Ebisu-sama or Daikoku-sama? Usually, it snowed on Hatsubi, and the flags we painstakingly wrote would get wet and fall off a few days later...
It was a very nostalgic event, but I haven't seen it much lately. Since my hometown was a farming family, I think they still offer Inari-san, but it seems they no longer display the five-colored "dedicated Inari Daimeijin" flags... Maybe the sushi with deep-fried tofu was served because it was February, the month of Hatsubi?
"Separate the Sweet Potatoes!" I was curious about the texture of the sweet potatoes, so I ate them separately...
"Whole Spear Squid (Three Pieces) - Compare and enjoy a whole natural spear squid!" I believe this set was also a limited-time offer...
I also like squid quite a bit.
