On the second day of my trip to Kyoto, after having breakfast in my room, I strolled around the Gion area. I visited Hanamikoji, Yasui Shrine, Ishin no Michi, Nene no Michi, Yasaka Shrine, and Shirakawa Minami Dori. Along the way, I discovered this shop on Tomonaga Street, just one block north of Shijo Street. It is a branch of the vegetable shop chain called Kyonoyasai Dokoro Kanoya. It was a little after 9 am, but the shop was bustling with locals and tourists, including Westerners. I took a peek inside and found out why - they offer fresh and affordable vegetables, mainly Kyoto vegetables. I had planned to buy some vegetables to take home, so this was perfect. I bought Kyoto bamboo shoots, Sansho pepper, spinach, arugula, Kyoto green onions, and regular green onions from Shiga. The vegetables from Kyoto and Shiga were all delicious. They had a vibrant and sweet flavor compared to Kanto vegetables and even those sold in Tokyo's supermarkets. The best was the bamboo shoots. I stir-fried them with pork belly, and the young and small bamboo shoots had a refreshing and elegant taste. I also bought half-priced pickled Sansho pepper, which was a great buy despite the tough leaves. With this experience, I don't think I need to visit Nishiki Market anymore. When I visit Kyoto again, I would like to visit one of the chain's stores.
