On my way back in November 2016, I felt like having a drink, so I decided to stop by this place after a long time. Some of the counter seats had been changed to standing seats, the menu had been narrowed down, but there were more limited-time menu options available. Whenever I come here, I always order the same thing. A draft beer, a set of 5 assorted skewers, and dote-yaki. The dote-yaki now comes in a share size, but they adjusted it to a single serving like before. I enjoyed a quick drink and meal for 1220 yen. This place is still convenient for those who want to have a casual drink.
Recently, I was surprised to see that a "Kushikatsu Tanaka" had opened in Yoyogi-Uehara, and it seems that kushikatsu is becoming popular in Tokyo. Even before this trend started, I would quietly stop by this place in a mixed building above Hatagaya station when I wanted to have a quick drink alone. I usually order a draft beer, an assorted set of 6 kushikatsu, and dote-yaki, which costs around 1200 yen. The kushikatsu is always freshly fried, delicious, and cheap. I wonder why this place isn't more popular. Lately, I have noticed more foreigners who seem to be staying at the nearby Sakura Hotel. I hope it doesn't get too crowded, but it's a convenient and honest place to eat.
On a revisit in July 2014, I found myself caught in a sudden thunderstorm on my way back from work. I sought shelter in this place located above Hatagaya station, where the atmosphere was a bit tense with tired office workers and solo male customers waiting out the rain. Despite this, I quickly ordered a draft beer for 480 yen, dote-yaki for 150 yen, and an assorted set of 3 skewers for 300 yen. The person who usually cooks and another staff member were busy working. I enjoyed my beer and kushikatsu while observing the hustle and bustle. The assortment that day included enoki mushrooms, chicken, and shrimp. I used to think that the kushikatsu place in Ebisu was delicious, but I like the quality and casualness of this place just as much, which is why I find myself coming here often. I also ordered a highball and spent about an hour before leaving to find that the rain had subsided. I'll definitely stop by again if I get caught in another sudden downpour.
Sometimes you don't feel like drinking heavily but just want a light drink before heading home. Yesterday, I was in such a mood and was looking for a reasonable place near the station when I remembered the kushikatsu restaurant I had noticed above the station. It took some courage to enter alone, especially with only two regular customers at the counter, already drunk and talking loudly. Despite feeling a bit intimidated by such regulars, the staff kindly welcomed me, which put me at ease. I ordered a draft beer for 480 yen and decided to try the "Recommended Assorted 6 Kushikatsu Set" for 600 yen. The staff also brought cabbage and sauce as accompaniments. The cabbage was a complimentary appetizer, and the sauce was the Osaka-style, two-dip-limit kind! Although there was no explanation, I noticed the words "Two-dip limit for sauce!" written where I could see, so I understood the rule. It would have been nice if they had explained it, though. While eating cabbage and waiting for the kushikatsu, I was served freshly fried skewers. The set included kushikatsu, quail, shrimp, squid, green pepper, and lotus root. They were all delicious with crispy batter, hot fillings, and sauce. This is a great option for a light drink snack.
