It is a visit after 4 pm on the weekend. The interior of the restaurant is cozy and the atmosphere is nice. We cheers with draft beer. Cabbage salad is served as a complimentary appetizer. The main dish is kushikatsu, but they also offer various side dishes. We ordered potato salad, kushikatsu skewers including beef, chicken breast, and large asparagus. The potato salad has a soft-boiled egg on top, which is delicious with the yolk. The fried onions add a nice touch. The beef skewer was a complimentary item and surprisingly thick and tender, very delicious! The chicken breast was fried lightly and was moist and tender. The asparagus was cooked perfectly and had a nice aroma. We added skewers of heart and fried tofu. The heart skewer tasted great with sesame oil and green onions. The fried tofu was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, topped with plenty of bonito flakes and ginger. We ordered more beef and chicken skewers, as well as quail and shrimp. The shrimp was firm and sweet, absolutely delicious! I am usually not interested in kushikatsu, but this place was a great choice! It was even better than the kushikatsu I had in its place of origin last month... I definitely want to come back to this restaurant.

The store is small, but near the entrance there is a table with a Miki Shoji emulator machine, offering over 1000 games including Invader and Galaxian. They also have a score service for these games. The kushikatsu is lightly fried and delicious, starting at 90 yen. The doteyaki is also a must-try.

I stopped by while shopping nearby. I always passed by the front of the store, but I thought it was hard to enter, so today I gathered up the courage and went in! The first thing I noticed inside was that the tables were Invader game machines, which was a pleasant surprise! I thought it was a funny and humorous store. I ordered the kushikatsu and a drink. After a short wait, the kushikatsu was brought to me, and each piece was freshly fried and crispy, with a thin coating that made it easy to eat! I highly recommend the seasonal large asparagus and shrimp! The sweetness and size of the asparagus will surprise you! The shrimp is fresh and chewy! The staff were also very friendly, so it's a place I would like to visit again! #kushikatsu #HatagayaHiddenGem

Green High offers regular size for 330 yen, mega size for 550 yen, and fried chicken for around 750 yen. Smoking is allowed. The quality is similar to Kushikatsu Tanaka.

A skewer restaurant with excellent cost performance! They have a wide variety of options, and the owner is friendly which reflects in the kind staff. My favorite spot.

I accidentally spent Sunday without alcohol, and on Monday, I had no motivation to work at all. Feeling guilty, I left the office promptly at regular hours, using the excuse of buying dinner groceries, and stopped by a bar near Hatagaya Station for just one drink. There is a place called "Kushikatsu Myodai" in the building with a walkway on the first floor near the north exit of Hatagaya Station. They offer a happy set until 7 pm, which includes a drink under 500 yen and 3 assorted kushikatsu for 540 yen. It's a great deal, so I decided to go in without hesitation. The interior of the bar is small with an L-shaped counter and a few small tables. It has a classic tavern atmosphere with rock music videos playing on a large TV and rock-themed decorations throughout. I checked the drink menu and decided to go with a draft beer for 480 yen. The kushikatsu arrived along with the beer, which included beef, squid, and onion. The beer was not in the best condition, probably due to the early opening time. I regret not choosing a bottled beer. The kushikatsu had a crispy coating and a flavorful sauce without being too sweet, which I really enjoyed. The onions were cooked perfectly with a nice texture and thickness. The happy set was a great deal, and the atmosphere of the bar was also very nice. Next time, I'll go for a highball with the happy set. But honestly, beer is the best match for kushikatsu. So, I hope they improve the condition of the draft beer. Overall, it was a great experience. Thank you for the meal.

I stopped by on my way home from Hatagaya Station for a walk. It was a small tempura restaurant. The atmosphere was cozy and the distance between the staff and customers was just right. I tried the recommended tempura and highball. The tempura had a crispy coating and a light sauce, it was a classic but well done. I also ordered "yagen age," which is not tempura but regular fried chicken. It was delicious. I usually don't like "yagen yaki," but when it's fried it's really good. It didn't feel very special, but it had a warm and cozy vibe that you don't find in chain restaurants. I think I'll try the "doteyaki" next time.

On my way back in November 2016, I felt like having a drink, so I decided to stop by this place after a long time. Some of the counter seats had been changed to standing seats, the menu had been narrowed down, but there were more limited-time menu options available. Whenever I come here, I always order the same thing. A draft beer, a set of 5 assorted skewers, and dote-yaki. The dote-yaki now comes in a share size, but they adjusted it to a single serving like before. I enjoyed a quick drink and meal for 1220 yen. This place is still convenient for those who want to have a casual drink. Recently, I was surprised to see that a "Kushikatsu Tanaka" had opened in Yoyogi-Uehara, and it seems that kushikatsu is becoming popular in Tokyo. Even before this trend started, I would quietly stop by this place in a mixed building above Hatagaya station when I wanted to have a quick drink alone. I usually order a draft beer, an assorted set of 6 kushikatsu, and dote-yaki, which costs around 1200 yen. The kushikatsu is always freshly fried, delicious, and cheap. I wonder why this place isn't more popular. Lately, I have noticed more foreigners who seem to be staying at the nearby Sakura Hotel. I hope it doesn't get too crowded, but it's a convenient and honest place to eat. On a revisit in July 2014, I found myself caught in a sudden thunderstorm on my way back from work. I sought shelter in this place located above Hatagaya station, where the atmosphere was a bit tense with tired office workers and solo male customers waiting out the rain. Despite this, I quickly ordered a draft beer for 480 yen, dote-yaki for 150 yen, and an assorted set of 3 skewers for 300 yen. The person who usually cooks and another staff member were busy working. I enjoyed my beer and kushikatsu while observing the hustle and bustle. The assortment that day included enoki mushrooms, chicken, and shrimp. I used to think that the kushikatsu place in Ebisu was delicious, but I like the quality and casualness of this place just as much, which is why I find myself coming here often. I also ordered a highball and spent about an hour before leaving to find that the rain had subsided. I'll definitely stop by again if I get caught in another sudden downpour. Sometimes you don't feel like drinking heavily but just want a light drink before heading home. Yesterday, I was in such a mood and was looking for a reasonable place near the station when I remembered the kushikatsu restaurant I had noticed above the station. It took some courage to enter alone, especially with only two regular customers at the counter, already drunk and talking loudly. Despite feeling a bit intimidated by such regulars, the staff kindly welcomed me, which put me at ease. I ordered a draft beer for 480 yen and decided to try the "Recommended Assorted 6 Kushikatsu Set" for 600 yen. The staff also brought cabbage and sauce as accompaniments. The cabbage was a complimentary appetizer, and the sauce was the Osaka-style, two-dip-limit kind! Although there was no explanation, I noticed the words "Two-dip limit for sauce!" written where I could see, so I understood the rule. It would have been nice if they had explained it, though. While eating cabbage and waiting for the kushikatsu, I was served freshly fried skewers. The set included kushikatsu, quail, shrimp, squid, green pepper, and lotus root. They were all delicious with crispy batter, hot fillings, and sauce. This is a great option for a light drink snack.

This is a small shop located inside a station building that is less than a minute's walk from Hatagaya Station. The nostalgic atmosphere with old decor and music is quite charming. It's not a place for lively gatherings, but rather for relaxing and enjoying a drink at a leisurely pace. The two staff members are friendly and create a laid-back atmosphere. The menu mainly consists of Osaka-style kushikatsu, with other dishes also offered at very low prices. We ordered various items such as beer, highball, sake, dote-yaki, potato salad, beef kushikatsu, quail, eringi mushroom, kisu fish, pickled ginger, and chicken karaage. The dote-yaki and chicken karaage were particularly delicious. The kushikatsu items were crispy and juicy, offering great value for money. The only downside was the slight smell upon entering and the smoking allowed inside. Overall, it was a satisfying experience with prompt service.

Located just a few seconds walk from Hatagaya Station, this restaurant has a great location. The interior is small with only a few counter and table seats, but it has a cozy atmosphere. I went there because my senior recommended their kushikatsu, saying it was delicious. Arriving before my senior, I ordered a draft beer, pickles, and salt stew. The salt stew was different from the usual miso-based stew, with a refreshing salty taste and delicious beef tendon. When my senior arrived, we ordered chicken breast, asparagus, tomato, onion, quail egg, and shrimp skewers. The kushikatsu is from Osaka, so the batter is thin and easy to eat, making it light on the stomach. The sauce is not thick, more watery, so it doesn't get too salty and you can enjoy it without getting tired of it. Everything was delicious, but the shrimp was especially fresh and fantastic. The place is small, so I wouldn't recommend it for groups of 3-4 or more, but it's a great restaurant with a good atmosphere and delicious food. I would love to go back again.

A retro Showa-era atmosphere shop. It's a small shop with a counter and small table seats. The beer is ice-cold, served in a stein, and delicious. First, have some beer and grilled chicken. It goes well with alcohol. The skewers are around 100 yen each and really good value! Plus, they're delicious. The menu has classic items as well as some that change depending on the day. I highly recommend trying the pickled ginger and chicken gizzards. They are really delicious. The pickled ginger is sliced into whole pieces and it's so tasty! The chicken gizzards are deep-fried and seasoned with salt. They're addictive. The oil changes as they fry more, so it's better to go early when there are fewer customers. They have a variety of drinks, from beer and shochu to sake. They even have udon noodles as a closing option. It's a place where you can eat plenty, satisfy your stomach, and be kind to your wallet. I forgot to mention, double-dipping in the sauce is not allowed (laughs).

I have been visiting Meidai-san for six years since I wrote a review, and I went again last weekend so I wanted to add an update. They have a variety of menu options which is great, but my favorite is the deep-fried chicken. So, I will add a photo of it! Meidai-san has been open for a while now and I have been a regular customer since the opening. The deep-fried skewers with a light crispy batter that you can order one by one is a delight. The sauce could be a bit thicker, but its lightness allows you to eat a lot. The meat, seafood, and vegetable dishes are all delicious, and I always end up trying the new menu items they have posted on the wall. The small dishes like the beef tendon with ponzu sauce are cheap and tasty. The doteyaki skewers were better when they were still on skewers. However, the only downside is that the table seats can be very cold in winter!! If not for that, I would want to go back tomorrow.

After coming out of the station stairs, there is a new tempura skewers restaurant on the side street. In the past, many shops opened and closed quickly (especially ramen shops, I think?), but this one is located on the right side at the back. Being from Kansai, the rule of no double-dipping in sauce brought back memories! I love tempura skewers, and I used to go to a restaurant in Hatagaya Golden Gai, but after the manager changed, the batter became thicker, so I stopped going. When I found out about this new restaurant, I decided to try it out. The tempura skewers were incredibly delicious, so I go there quite often. I especially like the lotus root and the fried chicken. It's exciting to see new varieties added each time I visit. The staff may seem unfriendly at first glance, but they are surprisingly kind and leave a good impression when you talk to them.

Located just outside the north exit of Hatagaya Station on the Keio New Line, a new kushikatsu restaurant has suddenly appeared on the 1st floor of a building. Established in 1952, it is considered one of the oldest kushikatsu restaurants in Osaka, and is said to be the birthplace of the practice of dipping the skewers in sauce twice. The restaurant is run by two young male staff members, and I was initially skeptical about its claim to being a long-standing establishment. However, I found out online that it has been in operation for at least 40 years. The information displayed at the restaurant also mentioned that the founder did not allow any branch stores to be opened, which has led to its continued success. The taste of the kushikatsu was excellent, with various items like plain kushikatsu (beef in Kansai), karaage, doteyaki, hamo, tebasaki, and tako being incredibly delicious and easy on the stomach. The "doteyaki" in particular, which is skewered beef tendon simmered in a slightly sweet sauce, was outstanding. The karaage also had a nostalgic and unique flavor that is hard to come by nowadays. I definitely want to visit this place again.

A skewer restaurant located above Hatagaya Station. Hatagaya has many yakitori restaurants, but skewer restaurants are a rare find, so I finally decided to go. The seating is small, about 10 seats, but it creates a close and cozy atmosphere with the staff. The skewers are priced around 100 yen, which is cheaper than skewer restaurants in Shinjuku. Plus, they are generously filled with ingredients, including large vegetables. The batter is light and crispy. After eating about 10 skewers, I was full. The specialty dish, dote-yaki, with tender and nostalgic suji (beef sinew) was a delightful taste for someone from Kansai. Personally, I found the deep-fried daikon radish surprisingly delicious. It's great to have alternative menu options. I was surprised by how affordable it was to eat here. I would definitely want to visit again when it's not too crowded.

Recently, kushikatsu, a popular dish where skewered and deep-fried ingredients are served, has been gradually gaining popularity in Tokyo. This particular restaurant is the first branch in Tokyo of a traditional establishment from Osaka. Surprisingly, the restaurant's name, Meidai, does not refer to a famous person but rather to the founder's surname, Noshiro. Each piece of kushikatsu is priced around 100 yen, slightly cheaper than the standard, but the crispy texture of the batter offers a depth of flavor that cannot be found in chain restaurants. Additionally, the variety of vegetable options adds an interesting twist. However, the atmosphere may feel a bit unwelcoming to first-time visitors, which could be seen as a challenge in terms of customer friendliness. Despite being a small establishment, I hope they continue to strive and succeed in serving authentic kushikatsu.
