During the war, it was requisitioned by the Imperial Navy, after the war it served as the barracks for the GHQ Army Women's Corps, and then it was opened by the founder who received it from the foundation after the GHQ takeover was lifted, making it a rare and prestigious hotel on the hill in Tokyo. There are only 35 rooms, each with a unique layout featuring Art Deco-style furniture, plaster walls, velvet curtains, and no two rooms are the same. When I was living in Tokyo, I always admired this hotel but never had the chance to stay there. However, during a visit back home in October amidst the pandemic, I decided to avoid crowded hotels and opted for this one thanks to the Goto travel campaign. Dinner was included in the plan, featuring a Michelin-starred tempura and Japanese cuisine. For breakfast, we were given the option of Japanese or Western, and I chose Japanese while my partner chose Western. My Japanese breakfast included grilled fish, rolled omelette, sashimi, simmered dish, mountain pepper simmered in silk, side dishes, roasted seaweed, pickled plum, mentaiko, chestnut yokan, pickles, miso soup, and rice. The traditional Japanese breakfast was satisfying with a variety of items including fresh sashimi, and the rice in the wooden rice container was delicious. I ended the meal with chestnut yokan after enjoying pickled plum with shredded dried plum and red miso soup. My partner's Western breakfast included toast, salad, scrambled eggs with ham, side dishes, orange juice, and tea. The ham was thick and satisfying, and the fluffy scrambled eggs were filling enough on their own, along with the onion and carrot salad dressing and buttered toast. However, my partner later expressed a slight regret and mentioned that the Japanese breakfast might have been better. The room amenities were plentiful and made our stay comfortable. The hotel seemed to have been recently renovated, but I wish I could have seen it in its old state! Despite being a historic hotel, those who appreciate its charm will surely enjoy their stay. I look forward to visiting again. COVID-19 precautions such as temperature checks, disinfectant stations on each floor, and all staff wearing masks were in place.
