I visited the "Kaneko Hanzo Shokuhin Shibuya Scramble Square Store" around 12:00 pm on a weekday in August 2023. I purchased the "Seafood Tempura Bowl" for ¥1,280, which included tempura of white fish, shrimp (2 pieces), seaweed, squid, shishito pepper, and eggplant with pickled vegetables on the side. The tempura had a perfect balance of sweetness in the sauce, and the moist texture of the tempura batter made it delicious. The white fish tempura was light and refreshing, while the shrimp tempura was a satisfying size. The squid tempura had a good chewy texture, and the seaweed tempura added a traditional touch to the tempura bowl. The shishito pepper and eggplant provided a nice crunch and sweetness to the meal. Overall, the "Seafood Tempura Bowl" was of high quality and worth the price. I would definitely visit the Kaneko Hanzo Shokuhin store again for their delicious tempura bowls.

This is a takeout specialty store for tempura and tempura rice bowls located on the basement second floor of Shibuya Scramble Square. I visited in the evening when I was feeling a bit hungry. This is my third time using this store operated by Oisys Co., which acquired the operating companies of "Kanekohanzo" and "Tsujita". I visited around 4 pm and bought a pack of white and black tempura rice balls, shrimp tempura sushi, and a tempura rice bowl. I chose the same salt-flavored white tempura rice balls as my first visit and also a single red pickled ginger tempura. I wanted to eat them right away, so I went to the eat-in corner "Shibuya Stand" in the center of the floor. I shared the pack of tempura rice balls and the red pickled ginger tempura with my friend. The tempura rice balls were bigger than I expected and the shrimp was plump. The saltiness of the rice was just right. The red pickled ginger tempura had a slightly firm coating and was well seasoned. We enjoyed them by adding the provided condiments like the black shichimi spice for the tempura rice balls and dipping the red pickled ginger tempura in tempura dipping sauce. This was my first time using "Shibuya Stand," but it was convenient to eat right away, and the space was well-equipped with partitions and hand sanitizers for peace of mind. It was easy to share and a simple way to satisfy a small hunger. Such spaces are valuable. Perhaps Kanekohanzo is suited for this kind of use.

This is a takeout-only shop located on the B2F of Shibuya Scramble Square called "Kaneko Hanzosuke". They sell dishes such as tempura rice bowls, tempura rice balls, and pressed shrimp sushi. I bought the Tempura Rice Ball Black (799 yen). Black refers to the sauce flavor, while white is salt flavor. It has a nice aroma due to the sesame oil. They are small in size, so you can easily eat them in one bite. Perfect for a snack. It was delicious. (July 2022)

Located on the B2 floor of Shibuya Scramble Square is Kaneko Hanzosuke. The atmosphere of the building is elegant and has a sense of luxury compared to other commercial facilities in Shibuya. The tenants include well-known brands commonly seen in station buildings and department store basements, giving off a casual vibe. The restaurant has a showcase in front of the cash register, with a glimpse of the kitchen on the side. The prices for the tempura dishes are higher compared to other Kaneko Hanzosuke locations, adding to the overall sense of sophistication. They offer the classic tempura bowl as well as a unique option called "Tempura Rice Box" for takeout. I tried the Tempura Rice Box (980 yen), which comes in a two-tier paper lunch box. The top tier contains tempura while the bottom has rice. The tempura includes shrimp, squid, white fish, eggplant, shishito pepper, shiitake mushroom, and egg, served with a dipping sauce with grated daikon radish. The tempura and rice are separate, allowing you to reheat the tempura to make the batter crispy again, but even when slightly soft, it still tastes delicious. The shiitake mushroom stands out for its excellent flavor, large size, and perfect balance of sesame oil, mushroom flavor, and dipping sauce. The shrimp, although slightly small, has a firm texture and is of good quality. The squid is also delicious with a strong umami taste. The white fish, although not specified, resembles a high-quality fish like sea bream. The egg tempura is perfectly half-cooked, ideal for mixing with the rice for a tasty combination. While the tempura bowl may offer a better overall experience, the Tempura Rice Box is a more affordable option to enjoy the flavors of Kaneko Hanzosuke. It's worth exploring the different menu variations at each Kaneko Hanzosuke location to fully appreciate the diverse offerings.

After work, I just made it in time to the newly renovated Shibuya Tokyu Food Show for its grand opening. It was my second time visiting since the reopening, and as usual, it was bustling with people! Today, I was aiming for the tendon bento by Kanesuke Hanosuke! Among the various types of tempura bowls available, I chose the seafood tendon. It included 2 shrimp tempura, egg tempura, seaweed tempura, squid tempura, and houbo tempura. It was a very fulfilling tempura bowl with a flavorful sauce, and the tempura coating was moist and tasty even until the last bite!

On this weekend day, I went on an expedition to Shibuya Scramble Square to get some sweets from Échiré. After waiting in a long line, I managed to buy Sablé Gras and Sablé Sandwich. Then, I went to the Deli and Bento floor on the second basement floor to find a takeout lunch. I came across a tempura rice bowl and tempura rice ball shop. I don't usually have a good impression of this chain, as it seems to prioritize quantity and appearance over quality. However, their limited "lunch tempura bowl" for 730 yen seemed reasonable, and they fry it fresh when ordered. Although I was told it would be a 15-20 minute wait, the tempura bowl was ready while we were talking. I was able to purchase it almost immediately. Carrying my bento, I emerged onto the crowded Scramble intersection. It seems like the lifting of the state of emergency has already been factored in, given the huge number of people. Initially, I thought about going to Yoyogi Park, but it was a bit far. Instead, I decided to eat on the rooftop of Tokyu Department Store, a relatively close and less crowded spot. When I opened the bento on the rooftop table, it was still warm, which was a relief. The aroma of sesame oil wafted out as I lifted the lid. The tempura included shrimp, houbou fish, mushrooms, eggplant, green peppers, and seaweed, all freshly fried and quite satisfying. The houbou fish, with its red tail, was a first for me in tempura, but it was mild and had a thick texture, providing a substantial bite. The crispy tempura flakes sprinkled over the rice added a nice touch. Overall, this lunch was quite satisfying, with various favorable conditions coming together.

The tempura rice bowl trend is still going strong. Today, after lunch, I parted ways with my husband and went shopping in Shibuya. On the way back, I stopped by the food show and discovered a tempura rice bowl shop that I missed last time! Without hesitation, I bought a vegetable tempura rice bowl. It was freshly made, and I could hear the voice saying so, so I decided to get it. Since I was still full from lunch, I wasn't very hungry, so I only got one to taste it with my husband. When we got home and tried it, it was a delicious tempura rice bowl that I really liked. The tempura was not greasy and had a refreshing taste, and the sauce was amazing. The rice was also very tasty. I definitely want to go eat at the restaurant sometime soon. I wasn't very hungry, so I only got a small portion, but since the tempura was light and not heavy, my husband and I managed to finish it. If it's this delicious even when it's cold, I can only imagine how amazing it must be when it's freshly made. I now understand why it's so popular.

This four-day weekend saw a sudden increase in crowds nationwide, but I stayed in Tokyo without going anywhere. In the afternoon, I went to Shibuya. Along the way, I stopped by this place. It's a takeout specialty restaurant for tempura and tempura bowls located on the second basement floor of Shibuya Scramble Square. It is operated by "Kaneko Hanzo" and "Tsujita", both acquired by the investment fund Advantage Partners and established as Oishii Promotion Co., Ltd. By the way, the seafood bowl "Tsujihan" created through a collaboration between Hanzo and Tsujita seems to be managed separately. I visited around 4 p.m., and the items available at that time were white and black tempura rice balls, shrimp tempura sushi, tempura bowl bento, etc. I purchased a pack of salt-flavored tempura rice balls (white) for 780 yen, which seemed perfect for satisfying my hunger. I went to Miyashita Park and opened it right away. Inside were five slightly larger tempura rice balls than those from Daireiya, along with the usual pickled ginger. When I tried them, they didn't taste freshly made, but the shrimp tempura had a strong presence. The subtle hint of pepper was quite impressive. Overall, it was a delicious tempura rice ball. Upon further research, Advantage Partners also invests in the food sector with other brands like "Hiramasu", "Ikinari Steak" by Pepper Food Service, "Cheese Garden" stores, and "Katsuya" under Arkland. With the restaurant industry suffering due to COVID-19, the fund's performance is something to keep an eye on. It may just be a small part of their portfolio, but there's a slight sense of discomfort in the connection between a fund seeking investment returns ruthlessly and the world of "food".

I bought some tempura for breakfast the next day around 3:30 pm on Sunday, remembering the days when I used to visit Kaneko Hanzo in Nihonbashi. I chose the salt flavor for the tempura. There's something about tempura that just draws you in, right? The restaurant has a rating of 3.26 on Tabelog as of August 2020.

This is a restaurant located on the 2nd floor underground of Shibuya Scramble Square (Tokyu Food Show Edge) called "Tendon and Tempura". It offers Tendon and Tempura bento boxes provided by Kanesuke Hanosuke, which has stores nationwide. The store opened in November 2019. I visited in the afternoon. The menu includes 3 types of Tendon, 3 types of Tempura bento boxes, 2 types of Tempura rice ball bento boxes, and Ebi Tempura Pressed Sushi. There was sufficient stock available. I purchased the following items (prices include tax). The containers cannot be heated, but the food is delicious as it is. - Ebi Tempura Pressed Sushi (1,080 yen): A limited edition item at Tokyu Food Show Edge. It consists of shrimp tempura mixed with vinegar rice. The batter is moist. There is a small amount of shrimp, so it feels like you're eating rice with batter, but it's still tasty. The portion size was adequate. It can be kept until 11:00 PM on the same day. Ingredients: Rice (using domestic rice), shrimp, ginger sweet vinegar pickles, vegetable oil, sauce (shaved bonito extract (shaved bonito (skipjack tuna, mackerel, sardine), dried bonito), soy sauce, sugar, fermented seasoning, mirin, others), sesame seeds, shiso leaves, wheat flour, salt, egg yolk powder/pH adjuster, seasoning (amino acids, etc.), acidulant, colorant, sweetener (saccharin Na), preservative (sorbic acid K), V.B1, leavening agent, emulsifier (contains some wheat, shrimp, egg, milk components, soybeans, sesame, mackerel) - Special Edomae Tendon (1,380 yen): Tempura served on a seaweed-wrapped rice ball soaked in sauce. The tempura includes conger eel, shrimp, squid tempura, egg, and shishito pepper. This dish is very filling. It can be kept until 11:00 PM on the same day. Ingredients: Rice (using domestic rice), sauce (shaved bonito extract (shaved bonito (skipjack tuna, mackerel, sardine, dried bonito), soy sauce, fermented seasoning, mirin, others), half-cooked egg, tempura flour (wheat flour, egg yolk powder, vegetable oil), conger eel, cut squid, vegetable oil, shrimp, pickled shiba, shishito pepper, grilled seaweed/seasoning (amino acids, etc.), colorants (caramel, red 106, red 102), seasoning, baking powder, V.B1, calcium lactate, preservative (sorbic acid K), sweetener (saccharin Na), flavoring, (contains some milk components, egg, shrimp, squid, soybeans, sesame, mackerel) The taste doesn't quite match up to eating in the restaurant, but it's convenient for takeout. However... I was surprised by the unexpected use of additives!

On February 6th, I ordered the special Edo-style Tempura Donburi from a popular takeout tempura restaurant located in Nihonbashi. The rice portion was smaller than those of many other rice bowl chains, making it just right for women, elderly people, and men who prefer to eat until they are 80% full. The tempura included onsen tamago (hot spring egg), anago (conger eel), squid, 2 shrimp, shishito pepper, and grilled seaweed. The tempura sauce was already poured over the dish, but you could also request extra sauce. I initially thought it might not be as good without the extra sauce, but I was wrong. The flavor after adding the extra sauce was indescribably delicious, elevating the dish to a rich and satisfying level. Considering the 20% discount near closing time, the cost-performance ratio was decent. However, at the regular price, I personally felt it was a bit expensive. For the same price, I would prefer to have a more generous and freshly made tempura bowl at a chain like Tenya.

With the addition of Scramble Square to Hikarie, exploring the depachika on the east side of Shibuya Station has become more enjoyable. By around 8 p.m. on weekdays, many stores on the floor have already started discounting their items. I purchased a tempura bento box at a 30% discount for 684 yen, which seemed like a good deal. It contained two portions of rice cooked with salt and roasted sesame base (white) and three portions of rice cooked with sauce (black). The sweet and savory sauce of the tempura complemented the rice well. Both the white and black rice had a nice flavor and aroma. The main character, small shrimp tempura, was delicious and went well as a side dish with alcohol.

Kaneko Hanzo, it's delicious. I went to a shop in Akasaka before. Not only is it delicious, but it's also cost-effective. I think it was about 2 years ago when I went there, and I didn't know about it at all before, but then I realized it's quite famous. Scramble Square has a food market like a department store basement. It's not in Tokyu Plaza, but it's here. It's fun just to look around. There are standing food tables like at a food show, but sometimes I feel like going home early and relaxing with my dog, or maybe I'll buy dinner at Scramble Square. I was thinking about going to the sandwich shop, but I'm hungry so I'll go for rice dishes! They also sell something like a tempura bowl that looks really delicious and tempting. They also sell tempura musubi individually. I hesitated for a moment (about 5 seconds) but decided to go for tempura musubi for the first time. It's a bento box. There are two types of tempura musubi. One comes with plain white rice. The other one has some flavored rice. Both have plump small shrimp on top. The shrimp are quite big for the bite-sized tempura musubi. In addition, there are pickled vegetables, fried chicken, tamagoyaki, simmered shiitake mushrooms, burdock, carrot, and silk pods. I think fried chicken is unnecessary for balance, but well, it's a bento box after all. Maybe they include fried chicken or red Vienna sausage as a tradition. It's exciting when there are fried chicken or calamari rings in a bento box like this. Well, of course, freshly fried tempura donburi from Hanzo is more delicious, but for a cold bento box, this tempura musubi set is quite enjoyable and tasty. The flavored tempura musubi was delicious. Ah, now I feel like eating freshly fried tempura at the restaurant.

I have visited this restaurant multiple times, but I always gave up because of the long line. I never thought I could buy Kaneko Hanosuke's tendon in this form. It might be a kind of happiness. This time, I purchased the half-size anago tendon and ate it at home. I always had the image that tendon would make my stomach heavy, but this tendon is different. It's the first time I thought tempura could be this delicious. I imagine it would be even better if eaten fresh at the main store. Definitely worth a visit to the main store! But it's also convenient to enjoy it in between work! Next time, I'll try the tempura rice ball as well.

Located in the prepared food area of Shibuya Scramble Square, this restaurant specializes in tempura rice bowls. It seems to be a branch of a famous restaurant in Nihonbashi known for its exquisite tempura. The menu includes tempura rice bowl bento boxes, tempura rice balls, and tempura dishes. This time, I bought the white tempura rice ball to take home. The shrimp tempura had a light coating and was served on white rice. The seasoning was just right, with a pleasant aftertaste. However, I found the shrimp to be a bit tough. While it was still delicious, I couldn't help but compare it to the tempura rice bowl I had at the restaurant before, which left me slightly disappointed.

I visited the store and bought some sweets as a souvenir. While wandering around the B2 floor, I came across a sign for "Shibuya store limited Ebi Ten Oshi Sushi" and decided to buy it. I'm a sucker for anything labeled "limited edition." However, the taste was quite underwhelming. It was like a sushi rice with strong vinegar flavor topped with a lot of tempura shrimp. Even though it was limited to 100 pieces, I was able to buy it in the busy evening of the year-end period, which makes me doubt its exclusivity. I've learned not to trust TV celebrities' recommendations for good food. But I guess I'm also to blame for easily falling for it (laughs).

On this day in December 2019, I went to Shibuya. I got off at JR Shibuya Station and headed to "Shibuya Scramble Square". While browsing for breakfast for the next morning on the food floor on the second basement floor, I became interested in a shop called "Kaneko Hanzo"さん. I have visited shops such as "Nihonbashi Tendon Kaneko Hanzo Honten", "Tempura Rice Kaneko Hanzo Nihonbashi Honten", and "Inaniwa Udon and Rice Kaneko Hanzo Coledomachi Store" before. Although the tempura bowl bento looked delicious, I only bought Tempura Rice Ball (Black) for 780 yen including tax, for the purpose of breakfast. The next morning, I enjoyed it at home at my own risk (laughs). The rice soaked in sauce and the small shrimp tempura were a perfect match, making it a slightly luxurious breakfast for me. Next time, I would like to try the tempura bowl as well.

When I went to Shibuya in the evening on a regular day, I stopped by and got some takeout. Purchased items: Ebi Ten Oshi Sushi @ 1000 yen, Maiko Mushroom Tempura @ 166 yen each x 3 pieces = 498 yen. The pressed sushi came in a slim container, perfect for a souvenir. The tempura sauce soaked into the rice and was delicious. The Maiko mushroom tempura, however, became a bit soggy when taken home.

I went to Shibuya Landmark Tower and on my way back from reaching the top, I found a place while exploring B2. There, I discovered the famous Tempura Mushi (Tempura Rice Ball) from Kaneko Hanzo. Memories of the tempura bowl I had in Nihonbashi came to mind, and my brain's detection function kicked in, stopping my feet in front of the shop. My neurons were telling me to buy it. At home, tempura mushi is not a favorite, but here I was, faced with Kaneko Hanzo's tempura mushi. My mouth watered, and I couldn't resist. I ended up buying both the white and black versions. White Tempura Mushi - 722 yen: This dish consists of rice mixed with white pepper, sesame seeds, and tempura shrimp with a thin coating. Despite the various ingredients mixed in, it was quite ordinary and didn't stand out much. My husband enjoyed the white version, saying the flavor of the shrimp stood out. Black Tempura Mushi - 722 yen: The black version features rice mixed with the secret sauce from the tempura bowl, fried tempura crumbs with sesame oil, and pickled ginger, along with tempura shrimp. Personally, I found the rich flavor of the rice intriguing, and I preferred the black version. Both dishes had firm and tasty shrimp. Additionally, both versions included the signature pickled ginger, which was a nice touch. Overall, as a fan of tempura mushi, I was pleased with my purchase. Although the well-established favorite, Jiraiya, offers a delicious and classic tempura mushi, Kaneko Hanzo's newcomer in the industry also provides a delightful experience. In the end, I found myself craving that tempura bowl I had before.

I bought Tempura Rice Balls! It was either perfect timing or a miraculous coincidence... There was one Salt Tempura Rice Ball and one Fried Chicken piece. The Salt Tempura Rice Ball had a crispy shrimp with a light salt flavor on a thin crust. It was small enough to eat in one bite. The pickled ginger added a nice touch. The Fried Chicken was tender with a sweet and salty taste that lingered. This tenderness would be good even for elderly people. I haven't tried the Tare Tempura Rice Ball yet as it was sold out, so I look forward to trying it next time. I would like to visit again. Thank you for the meal!
