On New Year's Eve, I went to Ameyoko to buy a feast for the New Year. The day before, I went to a nearby fish market but the king crab I wanted was too expensive. I parked my car at the underground parking lot near JR NO2 and Ueno Hirokoji, and headed to Ameyoko. It was not even 10 am yet, but there were already quite a few people. The main crab being sold was snow crab, and there weren't many shops selling king crab. I chose this shop that mainly sold crabs. They were selling three decent-sized snow crabs for 5,000 yen, which was a good deal. They also had king crab. I chose the most expensive one at 20,000 yen, but they gave it to me for 10,000 yen with salmon roe as a bonus. It was two sizes bigger than the king crab I saw at the fish market the day before. I found out why the king crab at this shop was cheaper on their website. "Ameyoko store open until New Year's Eve. Looking forward to your visit until the end!!! In December 2022, "Uotzuka" celebrates its first year-end. Taking over the long-established Inuzuka Shoten, we opened a new fish store "Uotzuka" in February, and the main product for the year-end special sale is, of course, "crab." The Ameyoko store is already bustling with crabs and red and yellow fish roe!! Overcoming the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia issue, the weak yen, inflation... a lineup of great products!! Why is crab a "must-buy" this year? 2022. It was a turbulent year for the fisheries industry. With Japan's self-sufficiency rate in seafood dropping below 60%, the 30% drop in the yen's value in a year had a significant impact, and the economic sanctions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine caused drastic changes in logistics. Most of the seafood we handle comes from the Northern Sea, which is the Russian waters. At the end of the year, can ordinary people like us buy fish? Will fish even be available? Many people must have had the same thoughts. Japan, with abundant "seafood resources" (crab, salmon trout, fish roe, etc.), and Russia, which has a rich supply, have had a longstanding relationship. With global warming, Japan, which is facing depletion of resources in the EEZ around Hokkaido, has continued trading with Russia to meet market demands, despite various constraints and the need to respond to the current situation. China, which also loves seafood like Japan, is in a similar situation. On the other hand, the seafood-loving America, with its rich resources in the Bering Sea, quickly stopped importing seafood from Russia. There were large-scale protests from the distribution industry against the government's sudden decision. So, what happened was... to put it simply, the "crab that America stopped buying from Russia" was left hanging. And a portion of it ended up in Japan." I stored the giant king crab in the freezer and had it for dinner after returning from my New Year's trip, with vinegar soy sauce and mayonnaise. It was the biggest king crab I've ever had, and I enjoyed the claws and legs. The claws were huge, with firm and plump meat. Claws have firmer and bouncier meat compared to the legs. The legs were thick and satisfying to eat. Oh, I was so satisfied! The cost-effectiveness index is 1.98, based on 19,800 yen for 10,000 yen. Bravo! Thank you for the feast!
