Walking around the Karasuma area, I found myself seeking refuge from the intense heat in the basement of Daimaru Kyoto store, where various sweet shops are gathered. The majority of the shops specialize in traditional Kyoto sweets, creating a delightful atmosphere. I had the chance to try a unique confection made from lotus root starch, resembling a yokan, which I had never tasted before. It truly allowed me to experience the essence of Kyoto's summer.

Upon researching, I found out that it is a variety created by crossing the "Guzar Color" and "Neo Muscat" grapes, known for being large, seedless, and having thin skin. It has a crunchy texture when bitten into, with a refreshing sweet and sour taste spreading in the mouth. You can enjoy the original aroma and sweetness of grapes that were lost by removing the skin and seeds, along with plenty of fruit. By cultivating each region in Okayama Prefecture with unique characteristics, you can enjoy this variety from June to November, different from Shine Muscat. The large size provides a satisfying eating experience. The perfect balance of a slightly sour river and the sweetness of the flesh is addictive. I ordered the Yoshizumi Japanese-style 2-tiered osechi (serves 3 people) for 16,200 yen from Daimaru Kyoto's online shop. Every year, my friends ask me to get osechi from department stores. Usually, it coincides with a trip, so I would bring the osechi in the car and eat it at the hotel. Looking back, I regret not fully appreciating it. This year, due to the coronavirus, I stayed home. I have never been more grateful for osechi than this year, and it was delicious. The presentation was beautiful, and we enjoyed it over two days. It was slightly on the rich side, but considering its shelf life, it was great. Thank you for the feast.

This year's New Year's feast was from Daimaru. It was a New Year's feast supervised by Sanmi Kōan. Both the price and the quality of the food were satisfying.
