タケマシュラン
Located in the Isozaki area, one of the top local cuisine restaurants in Hachijo Island. Reservations are essential for dinner, and it's recommended to book for lunch as well. The restaurant is famous for its "O-Samen Ryori," a course that recreates the dishes served when a convict who had been sentenced to exile on Hachijo Island was pardoned. It costs 5,500 yen, but we opted for the more affordable "Kuroshio Ryori" at 1,680 yen. As a designated driver, I ordered a passion fruit juice, which was a bit disappointing. It was overly sweet and lacked fruit pulp or seeds. At 500 yen, it felt quite expensive.
The appetizer set arrived shortly after ordering. It included unique ingredients such as Angelica keiskei konjac, local seaweed and seaweed, fish used to make kusaya, and local sweet potatoes and daikon radish. While the ingredients were interesting, the flavors were average. The dried radish was cut in a special way called "raikiri" to prevent it from being blown away by the sea breeze.
Next was the "neri," which is the local name for okra. It had a simple and nice flavor, with a strong taste of okra itself. The sashimi consisted of locally caught sea bream and amberjack. While fresh, they lacked depth in flavor and texture. It might be better to age them a bit more to enhance their taste.
The fish head soup was outstandingly delicious. It had a perfect balance of miso and intense seafood essence, surpassing the soup at many sushi restaurants. It was the best dish of the day.
For the finale, we had barley porridge, which was made with barley rice, potatoes, Angelica keiskei, and other vegetables in a miso-based porridge. It had a simple and addictive flavor, reminiscent of a complex seven-herb rice porridge. The pickled radish was slightly dried, providing a crunchy snack-like texture with a dairy-like acidity, creating an interesting taste.
After enjoying a full course of local cuisine and a drink, the total came to just over 2,000 yen. It felt a bit expensive. While the experience of tasting local cuisine was enjoyable, it may not meet the expectations of those seeking gourmet dining. It's more of a tourist spot.
