I asked the locals for a recommendation on traditional cuisine in Hachijojima, and they suggested "Izozaki En." I decided to visit the restaurant, which had a charming atmosphere starting from the parking lot. Although they recommended the barley porridge set, I was drawn to the salted pot of Onagadai, and ended up ordering a very hearty set. The salted pot of Onagadai and the Kinme sashimi were delicious. I managed to finish the meal despite feeling like I was about to burst. I had skipped breakfast that morning, but the portion was so filling that I didn't need to eat anything else for the rest of the day.

I visited this restaurant recommended by the innkeeper if I wanted to try island cuisine. The giant Gajumaru tree and swing in the parking lot really give off a charming island atmosphere. The island sushi and zosui (rice porridge) were delicious. The Yellowfin tuna from Hachijo Island was especially amazing. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

When visiting Hachijojima, we had lunch at "Isozaki En" in the Kashi Tate area, where we experienced the Hattori Residence and Kashi Tate Onsen. Isozaki En is a restaurant where you can enjoy dishes in a calm tatami room made from driftwood washed up on the coast and a tropical-style tatami room built using old stone walls. It is said to recreate the feast that islanders brought to the village chief's house to celebrate when a castaway was allowed to return to the mainland. We ordered the Kuroshio cuisine for 1760 yen and Kusaya for 700 yen (which we took away as our bus was approaching). Other menu items included the Goshamen cuisine for 5610 yen and Shome cuisine for 3600 yen. Kuroshio cuisine is a local dish of Hachijojima that emphasizes island ingredients, offering fresh seafood and organically grown vegetables in the island's unique flavors, allowing you to experience the island's culinary history. The Kuroshio cuisine includes dishes such as tomorrow's leaves konjac, two types of seaweed, sashimi of Alfonsino and Golden Threadfin Bream, simmered Oohime, Hime Dai, and dried daikon radish (cut in a special way called "raikiri" to prevent it from being blown away by the sea breeze), Kinbo (a dish cooked with red beans and sweet potatoes), island-style mashed sweet potatoes made with naturally dried Satsuma sweet potatoes cooked with red beans, local dishes like fish bone soup, miso-flavored barley porridge (as rice was not available on the island in the past, miso-flavored barley porridge was eaten), and dessert of island banana.

I visited the restaurant with a friend based on the ratings on Tabelog, wanting to try island cuisine. We ordered sashimi, island sushi, and salt-grilled fish. I tried some sashimi and salt-grilled fish, but my friend didn't seem to enjoy the island cuisine much. Well, we had to leave early because of an unexpected meeting.

There is a restaurant located near the Kashi Tate area on Hachijojima, just off the Hachijo Loop Road. This restaurant serves local cuisine and requires advance reservations. I made reservations for the "Kuroiso Cuisine" and "Salt Kettle" before visiting. The restaurant has private rooms, so you don't have to interact with other guests. The "Kuroiso Cuisine" is traditional and may not be very refined, but each dish has a unique flavor. The finishing rice porridge soaked up too much broth and expanded, but I personally found it delicious. The "Salt Kettle" featured Akahata fish this time, and the flesh was tender and tasty.

In February 2019, before going hiking on Mt. Hachijo with friends, we visited this famous restaurant on Hachijo Island known for its local cuisine. We ordered the Kuroshio cuisine and enjoyed the delicious taste of the local dishes. It was a great memory of our trip to Hachijo Island.

Located in the Isozaki area, one of the top local cuisine restaurants in Hachijo Island. Reservations are essential for dinner, and it's recommended to book for lunch as well. The restaurant is famous for its "O-Samen Ryori," a course that recreates the dishes served when a convict who had been sentenced to exile on Hachijo Island was pardoned. It costs 5,500 yen, but we opted for the more affordable "Kuroshio Ryori" at 1,680 yen. As a designated driver, I ordered a passion fruit juice, which was a bit disappointing. It was overly sweet and lacked fruit pulp or seeds. At 500 yen, it felt quite expensive. The appetizer set arrived shortly after ordering. It included unique ingredients such as Angelica keiskei konjac, local seaweed and seaweed, fish used to make kusaya, and local sweet potatoes and daikon radish. While the ingredients were interesting, the flavors were average. The dried radish was cut in a special way called "raikiri" to prevent it from being blown away by the sea breeze. Next was the "neri," which is the local name for okra. It had a simple and nice flavor, with a strong taste of okra itself. The sashimi consisted of locally caught sea bream and amberjack. While fresh, they lacked depth in flavor and texture. It might be better to age them a bit more to enhance their taste. The fish head soup was outstandingly delicious. It had a perfect balance of miso and intense seafood essence, surpassing the soup at many sushi restaurants. It was the best dish of the day. For the finale, we had barley porridge, which was made with barley rice, potatoes, Angelica keiskei, and other vegetables in a miso-based porridge. It had a simple and addictive flavor, reminiscent of a complex seven-herb rice porridge. The pickled radish was slightly dried, providing a crunchy snack-like texture with a dairy-like acidity, creating an interesting taste. After enjoying a full course of local cuisine and a drink, the total came to just over 2,000 yen. It felt a bit expensive. While the experience of tasting local cuisine was enjoyable, it may not meet the expectations of those seeking gourmet dining. It's more of a tourist spot.

We had the indulgent forgiveness cuisine in a course meal. Four adults were extremely full. We enjoyed dishes such as golden eye snapper sashimi, deep-fried fish, salted pot dish, and local dishes from Hachijo Island, making us imagine the high prices they would have been in the Edo period. When you visit Hachijo Island, be sure to try it.

There is a restaurant where you can eat local dishes from Hachijojima. The sashimi, simmered dish, pickles, sesame-dressed tomorrow leaves, barley porridge, and other dishes were all delicious with a gentle flavor.

When I saw the menu at Yoreyore, I thought, "Is this place okay?" but all the dishes were delicious. We ordered the shiome dish for three people. The salt-kettle fish steamed in a salt kettle in the Kuroiso dish was very plump and delicious. If you choose between shiome and salt-kettle, go for the salt-kettle. If you come to Hachijo Island, you must visit this place.

I went thinking there would be island-style pickled rice bowl at this house, but it wasn't there. However, the sashimi was delicious.

I ordered the Kuroshio course (1620 yen). It included sashimi with sea bream and bonito, seaweed salad with wakame and tosaka seaweed, simmered eggplant, fish head soup with mixed rice, pickles aged for 2 years, salt-grilled sweet potato, dried radish, simmered fish, and various island dishes. I was very satisfied with the variety of dishes and flavors.

Hachijo Island is famous for its local cuisine, with island sushi being a popular choice. This restaurant is known for serving a special pardon meal, which is unique on the island. In the past, Hachijo Island was used as a place of exile, along with Miyake Island. Before leaving the island after serving their sentence, individuals would be treated to a pardon meal. Unfortunately, when I tried to visit, the restaurant was only available for private bookings for groups and sometimes tour buses stop there. I tried again the next day and was surprised by the rustic menu. I ordered the Black Current Course for 1620 yen, which included sashimi, tomorrow's leaf konjac, simmered dish, rice porridge, and pickles. They also served chilled tomato and fish soup as a bonus. The food was simple, perhaps a treat for those who have just been released from prison. The restaurant seemed to be understaffed, with only two servers for all the customers. I could see some pre-made dishes, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, the meal was not to my taste, but the passion fruit juice was delicious. It was a unique dining experience on Hachijo Island.
