Located a little distance away from the Starbucks Reserve Roastery across the Meguro River in the northwest of Naka-Meguro Station is CAFÉ FAÇON BASE Tokyo. This is a new branch of FAÇON, a name that undoubtedly comes up when talking about coffee lovers in Naka-Meguro. The color scheme here is different from the main store, with light gray, blue, and red awnings. There are three ways to enter the cafe: for takeout, for eating in (two options, one may be for smokers or customers with pets?). Currently, you can access the eat-in area through the takeout entrance, but soon they will place the roasting machine there (for now, roasting is done at the Daikanyama store). The espresso machine is a Synesso MVP Hydra, and the grinder is a Mahlkonig (the grinder for takeout is a Kalita). Inside, there is an L-shaped table layout extending towards the back. I visited for a snack after lunch, but I found out that you can have a proper meal here as well. Unfortunately, that will have to wait for next time. This time, I tried the Amazon cacao and orange mousse (¥880), the Red Dream Tart Tatin (¥880), and an Americano (¥605, with a ¥100 discount for a set). The cakes are almost original. The Amazon cacao caught my eye on the menu, and I immediately ordered it. It uses Amazon cacao introduced to Japan by the Amazonian chef Tetsuo Ota. The cake has a unique flavor that is not overly prominent or hidden. The Tart Tatin has an unusual color scheme. Instead of the usual caramel-colored apples, it uses red-fleshed apples to emphasize their unique flavor. The Red Dream has a strong acidity, highlighting the individuality of the apples. Both cakes are bold choices. (It was unusual for a middle-aged man to eat two cakes in a row, so the pastry chef came out afterwards to explain them to me). The Americano is strong because it is espresso-based, with a slightly lower temperature. In terms of coffee, the menu for eating in currently does not offer the diverse bean selection as the main store, so customers may need to choose wisely. The cafe aims to attract customers with a casual atmosphere rather than emphasizing expertise, making coffee enthusiasts feel welcome. It is a different approach from the main store (autre façon). If I have the chance, I will try the curry next time.
