I went to Shibaran in Kagurazaka for the first time in a while when things settled down a bit. The lady there welcomed me warmly, saying "Long time no see! Welcome back!" I ordered a draft beer and Chen Mapo Tofu. Usually I order a variety of dishes, but due to circumstances, I had to keep it simple this time. The Chen Mapo Tofu, passed down from Sichuan Hanten, was upgraded and tasted delicious! I enjoyed it with Ruby, without ordering rice. The balance of numbing and spicy flavors was just right (although it was on the spicier side). I even ordered a second Ruby and kept enjoying the meal! So delicious! The other dishes were also tasty, but sometimes just sticking to Chen Mapo Tofu might be a good idea too. Thank you for the meal!

I went at night. I had only had lunch before, so I was impressed by how delicious all the dishes I tried for the first time were! The chicken appetizer was amazing, with the meat being really tender and moist. The shrimp chili was not the usual red color, and both the appearance and taste were fresh. I really love it.

All the dishes were spicy (Sichuan cuisine, so it's expected). Especially the mung bean sprout dish was surprisingly spicy. Other than that, all the dishes we ordered were delicious. The dumplings were advertised as a set of 10, but they were very small and cute. The dry dan dan noodles were the best, I want to come back for lunch. The location on a complex street may be why there were only 3 other groups besides us on a weekday night. It felt almost like a private dinner in a cozy atmosphere.

It's not the type where you mix the rice in after eating the noodles, so ordering a side of mini mapo tofu along with it will increase satisfaction. Although the one with Sichuan pepper seemed to be their specialty, I decided to try the standard mapo tofu (1100 yen) as I thought the former might be too spicy. You can request extra rice for free when ordering lunch, but there is an additional charge if you ask for it later. I didn't opt for extra rice, but the mapo tofu was quite spicy, so the rice definitely helped balance it out.

The rice was not enough... but it cost 1300 yen. Maybe it's because of the location? When it comes to dining in Kagurazaka, there is a good image of a nice atmosphere, and this place definitely lived up to that image. We asked the staff for recommended dishes and ordered a few. The same dishes were served: assorted appetizers, Sichuan duck, shrimp chili (additional 3,800 yen), whole abalone simmered in soy sauce (with added fish maw for 2,000 yen), grilled head-on tiger prawn, black pepper stir-fried domestic beef and spring vegetables, colorful spring vegetable spring rolls, authentic mapo tofu and rice, and almond tofu and rabbit bun for dessert.
