Visit Time Tabel: 3.21
This is the only "Michi no Eki" (roadside station) in Tokyo, located near Hachioji Interchange, so it is best to visit by car. It is a 10-minute taxi ride from JR Hachioji or Keio Hachioji, or a 2,465m walk from Komiyama Station, making it difficult to reach on foot for those not in the neighborhood. There is a large parking lot on the premises, where we parked for free.
Inside the roadside station, it looks like a supermarket at first glance, with locally grown vegetables, prepared foods, honey, snacks, and fruits being sold. Near the entrance, there was a mobile sales booth selling peanut butter and peanuts.
The three main items we came for this time, which were also featured on TV, are as follows:
Apart from the steamed buns sold at the store, you can purchase items from the shop starting at 9:00 am, but if you go too early, the lineup for items like gelato and freshly made rice cakes may be limited.
Shop:
- Hachioji Ramen: A nostalgic soy sauce flavor with plenty of chopped onions, and thin straight noodles. It's light enough to eat even in the morning.
- Spicy Mochi: A simple taste of spicy daikon radish and soy sauce, with bite-sized soft mochi pieces. Contains 4-5 pieces.
Vegetable section:
- Sesame Steamed Buns: I bought one, froze it at home, then microwaved it at 600 watts for 30-45 seconds before eating. The outer layer is a soft and gentle dough with a sweet wheat flavor and aroma, filled with black sesame seeds and granulated sugar rubbed into the skin. When you chew, it has a crunchy texture, and some might say it feels like eating sand, but it's a rustic handmade steamed bun that I enjoyed. I found it intriguing that the granulated sugar did not melt even when warmed, but it was delicious. I also recommend adding salted butter inside after warming it at home.
I also purchased Salvia (also known as Baby Kiwi) and Ripe Chestnuts. There were many items that are not easily found in the city center, and it was interesting to see a variety of products available at reasonable prices.
It might be worth visiting once for some interesting conversation starters.
