During a curry exploration in Nakano, a popular shop with rich curry: Trico Curry. Located along the railway tracks between Koenji Station and Nakano Station, this shop exudes a homemade feel. Established in 1998 in Fukuoka, the owner operated a restaurant before opening Trico Curry in his 30s. After running a curry shop in Fukuoka for over a decade, he closed the shop and moved to Tokyo. In 2010, he reopened in Setagaya under the name Pipi Curry. After another temporary closure, the shop reopened in its current location in 2014 as Trico Curry in Nakano. Situated in a residential area with few eateries by the railway side, the shop is marked by its red signage on tin and plywood panels, with a distinctive red door. The menu features seven types of curry, each served with a salad. Trico Curry specializes only in curry, with its signature Trico Curry featuring ground meat since its establishment. Other curry options include Taco Rice-style Taco Curry, Chicken Curry with boiled chicken, and the popular Pipi Curry, which varies with over 10 types of vegetables cooked differently each time. Customers can choose between white or brown rice, both sourced from Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures, respectively. Rice portions come in large, regular, or small sizes, with men typically opting for the regular 200g portion. Customers can also choose between regular or spicy levels of heat, with all curry dishes served with salad. The Pipi Curry, for example, can be ordered with regular white rice and a soft-boiled egg topping. The salad, featuring salsa and pasta, provides a satisfying start while waiting for the curry. The curry arrives in a large plate piled high with vegetables, including lotus root, eggplant, pumpkin, turnip, tomato, asparagus, garlic sprouts, paprika, corn, edamame, black beans, avocado, shishito pepper, sweet potato, enoki mushrooms, and carrot salad. A total of 16 types of vegetables are topped on the curry, each meticulously prepared to complement the dish. The Trico Curry is known for its incredibly rich and flavorful curry roux, which boasts a heavy and spicy taste with hints of mango, peach, and apricot sweetness. The curry contains eight types of spices and herbs, resulting in a distinct spiciness in the spicy version. Mixing the curry thoroughly reveals a thick and creamy texture that melts in the mouth, releasing a burst of herb aromas. Despite its Western-style taste, the curry is exceptionally heavy and may be too rich for some. Trico Curry offers a unique dining experience with its rich and complex flavors, making it a must-visit for curry enthusiasts.
