Visited this traditional Japanese confectionery store during my day off. Located a 5-6 minute walk from Nakano Station South Exit, this shop has been serving the local community for nearly 60 years and is beloved by the veteran ladies of Nakano. The sign outside the shop reads "Kuri Manju, Kurimokonaka," indicating that their specialty is chestnut sweets. I visited on a Tuesday afternoon around 2 pm and was the only customer. The store was pleasantly cold inside, which was nice. The display case near the entrance showcased various chestnut sweets, including the "Kotuki Enzan" which has been sold since the shop's establishment. I purchased this and enjoyed it as a snack the next day. The thin and soft monaka shell was filled with moist sweet bean paste and a whole chestnut in the center. It had a perfect level of sweetness and was very satisfying. It would go well with some bitter green tea. This chestnut sweet, loved by the community and showing love to the community, was delicious. Thank you for the treat. I will definitely visit again.

This chestnut bun has a firm skin and a strong chestnut flavor inside. It was delicious! A customer who entered the shop at the same time ordered 10 dorayaki without even looking around the shop. Dorayaki must be famous here too.

Nakano's famous confectionery shop "Kotgetsudo" strikes again. After the large chestnut steamed bun (Kigyoku Manju), now comes the large chestnut monaka (Kotgetsu Enzan)♪ Kotgetsudo is located around the midpoint between JR Nakano Station and Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line Shin-Nakano Station. 【Kotgetsu Enzan】Type: Chestnut Monaka Name: Kotgetsu Enzan (Kotgetsu Enzan) Shelf Life: 7 days The monaka is packed with plenty of sweet bean paste, making it firm. When you break it open, you'll find a large chestnut inside♪ It's a delicious and substantial chestnut monaka. The package also features cute illustrations on the monaka.

I tried the yellow gem manju from Meigetsudo in Nakano. At first glance, it looks like a regular manju, but inside, there is a big whole chestnut. The chestnut is coated with white bean paste. It's not just an ordinary manju, when you bite into it, you'll be surprised by the chestnut inside. The bean paste and the dough are soft and comforting. It's really delicious and the size is not too big, so it's perfect for a casual snack.

Nakano's popular souvenir from a traditional Japanese confectionery shop is their dorayaki. I don't eat sweet things often, so I'm not very familiar with traditional Japanese sweets, but this dorayaki has a fluffy texture with a sweet, crispy aroma. The inside is filled with sweet red bean paste, giving it a comforting flavor. It's very satisfying and now I feel like having something salty.

Kuri Manju (chestnut bun) is being heavily promoted. Maybe that's the one they were talking about on the bus? The bun has a whole chestnut in the middle. But it feels a bit dry, not that great. Today is Hinamatsuri (Doll's Festival), so I got some sakura mochi. I'm not a big fan, but it's a seasonal thing, so I bought some for my family. The sakura mochi is bigger than others, with three sakura leaves! No wonder it has a strong sakura scent. And it's so delicious, very chewy. I love it more than any other sakura mochi I've had before. I plan to buy more before March ends. ♥

Tiger Tsukidou seems to be the name of the place. It's a traditional Japanese confectionery shop that has been around for about 50 years. They are famous for their dorayaki, which has a firm and solid texture. I particularly enjoyed their mizu-yokan, a refreshing and small-sized dessert that is perfect for hot weather when you don't have much of an appetite.

It's been quite some time since I made my purchase, but it was a great shop so I decided to write about it on my blog. When I started coming to Nakano for work, I was trying to remember the streets by walking around. I ended up passing by Toratsukido, feeling a delicious scent in the air, and realizing that I still hadn't reached Nakano Station. It was a highly rated store on Tabelog. When I buy from traditional Japanese sweets shops, I usually go for items like dorayaki and monaka that use sweet bean paste. I prefer tsubuan (chunky sweet bean paste) over koshian (smooth sweet bean paste), so these two items are often my go-to choices. I think one of the items I purchased was a dorayaki and the other was probably a kurimokkori (chestnut-filled sweet). The deliciousness of the sweet bean paste really makes a difference in these two items. Although I didn't eat them on the spot, I felt a bit more energized knowing that I had them to enjoy when I got home. I definitely want to visit this shop again in the future. I will probably go back there soon. Thank you for the wonderful treats, Toratsukido.

I went to Nakano to watch a friend's live performance. On the way to the venue after lunch, I stumbled upon a traditional Japanese sweets shop. It was the type where the first floor of an apartment building is converted into a shop. Feeling curious, I decided to go in and try a variety of their signature sweets. Here are my thoughts on each one:
- Kuri Manju: A chestnut-filled manju with white bean paste. The chestnut was soft, sweet, and delicious, although the manju itself was a bit dry, making it a good match with tea.
- Hitotoki Ume: A manju with a whole plum in the center. This one also had a dry texture, with a refreshing acidity from the plum and yellow bean paste.
- Magomusume: A sesame dumpling-like sweet with yellow bean paste and apricot inside. The sweet and sour aroma, along with the texture and flavor of sesame, blended well together.
- Kogetsuen Zanzan: A chestnut-filled monaka with a unique elongated shape. The filling was predominantly crushed sweet bean paste, with a soft chestnut inside and a crispy yet moist monaka shell.
Overall, all the sweets showcased a meticulous craftsmanship and deliciousness.

It's really been around for a long time, since I was a child. I've been doing it for about 40 years. However, this was my first visit. I bought two dorayaki and two kougyokuman as souvenirs. Kougyokuman is a famous sweet from Nakano. I've lived in Nakano for 43 years and this was the first time I heard about it and tried it. It has a large chestnut inside, surrounded by white bean paste, and coated with a smooth skin. The dorayaki skin has a nice smell. I like this smell. It has a moist skin and chunky red bean paste. I like chunky red bean paste. It felt like it was made using traditional methods. Thank you for the meal~ (^^)/

Nakano's famous confectionery shop, Toratsukido, now closes on Sundays and Mondays and has shortened its operating hours to 5 pm. However, the quality of their products remains consistent and I hope they continue this way in the future. Today, I bought a set of 4 Kogane-Mitsu and 4 Toratsukienzan, as well as 4 dorayaki for souvenirs, and 2 dorayaki for myself. The dorayaki has a fluffy outer layer and is not too moist. When paired with Toratsukido's red bean paste, it tastes quite delicious. I recommend it to those who prefer a lighter dorayaki.

Nakano Kogedou, Kougyokuman
I felt like eating something sweet like Kurimanju or chestnut-flavored treats, so I was riding my bicycle and came across Kogedou. I like how they clearly express their love for chestnuts. They have been around for over 50 years since the Minamidai era, which shows how beloved the store is. They were sold out of various items, so I bought a Kougyokuman and ate it at home. It was filled with a big chestnut and wrapped in white bean paste... It was good, I like this kind of treat. It's also nice that it lasts for 7 days, it could make a good souvenir.

Yellow jade manju. I bought it after a long time. It's a manju with a whole chestnut inside. The manju part is thin, and the inside is filled with chestnut.

I will try the famous "Dorayaki" for 180 yen. The skin is chewy, and the filling is not too sweet, making it popular among women and others. It's understandable why it's so popular.

【Added on 9/20/2019】The other day, when I passed by the store, they were selling dorayaki. It seems that they were just sold out when I visited last time. I'm glad. When it comes to buying souvenirs in Nakano area, it's gotta be the chestnut manju from Tokudou, right... I've been neglecting it for quite a while. I visited there after a long time on a recent afternoon and bought one Emimanju and one Kigatama as a treat for myself. I really wanted to have dorayaki, but unfortunately, it wasn't in the lineup. I paid with a 500 yen coin and got some change. When I got home, I enjoyed them with a strong hot green tea. Ah, it's so nostalgic. The slightly dry skin and generous amount of chestnut are delightful. The firm sweetness that doesn't need the usual phrase "not too sweet but delicious" often heard on gourmet shows. A refined taste that is not overly rich. This is the kind of traditional Japanese confectionery that you can't do without. The product lineup, which is in contrast to the popular light and airy sweets these days, may have lost some momentum compared to before, but I hope that the store will continue to work hard with the same design and taste of their chestnut sweets. If, by any chance, they have stopped making and selling dorayaki, I sincerely hope for its comeback.

The sweet bean paste dorayaki and kohgyoku manju were delicious, but I didn't really like the taste of sakuramochi. The kashiwamochi was also tasty. I will go buy dorayaki regularly.

My daughter and I love the delicious plum sweets here, and we come all the way from Shibuya to get them. There is no other Japanese confectionery as tasty as this. I hope they continue making them for a long time.
