I had some errands to run at Kinokuniya bookstore, so I made a reservation for a meal afterwards and visited after a long time. It must have been years since my last visit. Despite the challenging times we are in, I am happy to see that the restaurant is still going strong. For my order, I chose the Sungari course for ¥4820, which included: - Today's amuse-bouche (small salad) - Marinovnaya-Keta (Russian-style fresh salmon marinated in blini crepe) - Griviy v Smetanye (creamy mushroom stew) - Borscht (beet and meat vegetable soup) - Yarkoye iz Charlyachnui (tender veal roast Russian-style) - Piroshki - Espresso coffee For a pre-dinner drink, I had the Peach Siburskoye for ¥780, and during the meal, I enjoyed a glass of Cherti Kvevri wine for ¥980 (orange wine). Oh, the Marinovnaya-Keta was delicious! Really delicious. The balance of sour cream, onions, and fresh salmon is just perfect. I used to remember the staff rolling the crepe at each table, but now it seems they prepare it in the kitchen. The borscht also had sour cream in it, offering a gentle and tasty flavor with the richness of the vegetables. The tenderness of the veal in the Yarkoye iz Charlyachnui was exceptional, and the mushrooms were also delicious. The whole garlic clove in the dish was not overpowering. And the orange wine I was curious about was quite interesting - not red or white, but a unique flavor. I really love the food at this restaurant. I look forward to visiting again when I have the chance. "Thank you for the meal."

Shop Name: Sungari Location: Shinjuku Cuisine: Russian and Ukrainian Located about a 2-minute walk from Shinjuku Station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line. From JR Shinjuku Station, head towards Kabukicho and walk straight towards Shin-Okubo along the Seibu Shinjuku Line elevated tracks. You will see a Lawson convenience store under the tracks, and Sungari's sign is just across from it. The entrance to the restaurant is very stylish, with stairs leading down to the basement. Upon opening the door, you will feel like you have entered a different world. The interior has a medieval European atmosphere, with many paintings hanging on the high ceilings. The lighting is dim, creating a lovely ambiance. The spacious restaurant offers table seating, private rooms, and a bar counter. We were guided to a table near the bar counter, which felt like a slightly private space. We ordered the Sungari Course for ¥4,820, which includes Beef Stroganoff and Ukrainian-style stuffed cabbage rolls, among other traditional dishes. We started with a toast with sparkling wine and enjoyed the amuse-bouche, caviar tart, and Marinated Salmon Blini. The Mushroom Pot-au-feu in cream sauce was delicious, and the Borscht soup was flavorful. For the main course, we could choose from three options. I chose the Beef Stroganoff, which was tender and creamy. We also tried the famous Pelmeni dumplings, both fried and baked, which were both delicious. We also ordered dessert and vodka to complement our meal. The vodka came in various flavors, and we enjoyed the Salted Caramel and Coffee vodkas. The dessert, Russian Tea, was served with jams to eat while sipping the tea. Sungari is a wonderful restaurant where you can experience authentic Russian and Ukrainian cuisine. I would definitely love to visit this place again.

I wanted to try a type of cuisine that I don't usually eat, so I visited this restaurant with a friend! The entrance to the restaurant felt like going down to a basement, and the interior was like a chic hideaway with a calm atmosphere. Perfect for a date! Although there were set menus available, we decided to order a la carte this time. In terms of price, the set menus were probably a better deal, but the real charm of this restaurant is the variety of dishes on the menu. The drink menu was also impressive, with a wide selection of alcohol, even tempting someone like me who isn't good with alcohol to try vodka (I was curious about chocolate vodka...!). There were so many choices for appetizers, soups, mains, and desserts that we didn't know what to choose, but everything we ordered was delicious! It was fun to imagine what the authentic flavors would be like if we had this in the actual countries. The chai tea after the meal, with three types of jams (Bulgarian rose jam, strawberry and orange peel jam, cherry jam) and black tea, was the perfect ending. Despite the current situation, I hope to visit the countries where these dishes originate from someday. The staff were all very good at Japanese and provided wonderful service. Thank you for the meal! I would love to visit again.

The fun M party came in last place. As always... but it was enjoyable. The after-party was turned into a Russian and Ukrainian cuisine appreciation event. Of course, with all-you-can-drink option. Everyone had beer, while I toasted with sparkling water. Congratulations to the lucky winner who was way ahead just by luck! It was fun, but the unmanned mahjong parlor was... not so much. It was casual, but Kabukicho remains a deep and unchanged place. In one corner of Kabukicho, there is Sungari, a slightly dimly lit place making it hard to take photos. There was a touch of elegance with the knife and fork. Russian and Ukrainian cuisines are quite similar, with dishes like piroshki and borscht. They use a lot of flour and butter in their cooking. With the all-you-can-drink option, everyone was drinking wine and vodka by the bottle. Quite impressive. It felt nostalgic for me. The dishes were quite heavy, so I ended up quite full. I chose a course without piroshki, but I heard the authentic ones are delicious. I would like to try real piroshki next time. The staff seemed to be Russian or Ukrainian. Friendship is the most important. [This time's course: Party plan with all-you-can-drink for 6,680 yen] - Marinated Ket (fresh salmon marinated in crepe) - Grivi v Smittane (mushroom and white asparagus cream stew) - Borscht (thick beef and vegetable soup with red cabbage flavor) - Golubtsy (Ukrainian-style stuffed cabbage rolls in baked tomato sauce) - Homemade Hariep bread baked in the store All-you-can-drink drink menu: beer, cocktails, Russian vodka, and more, a total of 18 items.

Sungari seems to be the name of a river near the border between China and Russia. The restaurant is located on the basement floor and has a dark lighting that takes some time to get used to. It's not a very large restaurant, with somewhat tight seating, making it ideal for a date for two. The staff, except for one Japanese person, all appear to be of European descent. Communication is not an issue, but they are not particularly friendly, which doesn't bother the reviewer. The reviewer opted for a course priced at 6,589 yen, which included the following dishes: 1) Marinated salmon in crepe, 2) Mushroom and white asparagus cream stew, 3) Beef and vegetable red cabbage-flavored soup, and 4) Ukrainian-style stuffed cabbage rolls in tomato sauce. The reviewer found the dishes to be overall on the sweeter side, with no spicy options. The stuffed cabbage rolls were particularly enjoyable, with a generous amount of sauce. A companion who had been to Russia noted that the dishes seemed to have some Japanese influence, but the reviewer was interested in trying more authentic Russian dishes.

The interior with a foreign atmosphere was lovely. The course offers classic Russian dishes. The flavors were light and enjoyable until the end. I had never tried the combination of tea and jam after a meal, but I was surprised to find that rose jam and tea go so well together. I might get hooked on it in the future.

While on a trip to Tokyo for a fan event, I stopped by Shinjuku with my younger brother to visit Sunagari, a famous restaurant run by Kato Tokiko's family. Since I became interested in Georgia during my fan activities, I chose the Old Tbilisi wine. For the food, we opted for the Sunagari course as it was our first time there. Everything was elegant and delicious! The borscht and stroganoff were especially tasty. After the meal, when I mentioned to my brother that "Koi-chan was eating suushka and Enonoka was drinking tea, like in Svetlana's lighthouse scene," Svetlana herself, who was at the restaurant, responded with "Yes, I'm Svetlana!" It was the highlight of the day (laughs). I definitely want to go back for another meal!

As someone who has lived in Russia, finding a delicious Russian restaurant is a rare gem. I have explored a few in Japan, but the most authentic and delicious one I have found is this one. While they do offer beginner-friendly dishes like borscht, piroshki, and beef stroganoff, I tend to skip those as I am familiar with Russian cuisine. Instead, I enjoy the dishes I had in Russia and surrounding countries. The standout dish for me is the salo, which is salted pork fat that tastes just like it did in Russia. Pairing it with vodka and black bread is a must, creating the ultimate trio. The salyanka soup has a perfect balance of saltiness and acidity, with a touch of lemon. The duck pate and pastet iz uchachnuy are as expected. The seafood salad, salat tabule, exceeded my expectations with the perfect match of scallops, seafood, and wheat. The pot-roasted galushka was as expected, and the roasted venison, pechyonney orem, was also satisfying. The vodka is served semi-frozen, and other cocktails may not be very Russian, but they are a good option for those who don't like vodka. They have a wide selection of aperitifs and digestifs. Overall, I highly recommend the salo, salyanka, and salat tabule. The pastet iz uchachnuy, galushka, and pechyonney orem were also good. I look forward to trying the horse meat tartare or the appetizer platter next time. You can find recipe videos on YouTube here: https://youtube.com/@user-cc7ov6ke6f

This is a Russian restaurant located in a building near the Seibu Shinjuku Station. They offer authentic Russian cuisine as well as dishes and drinks from other former Soviet countries. I enjoyed Georgian red wine with appetizers like pickled cabbage, borscht, pirozhki, and beef stroganoff. The borscht had a classic flavor with the perfect blend of beet and sour cream. The beef stroganoff had a rich taste of demi-glace sauce and beef, with just the right amount of sour cream. I left the restaurant feeling full and completely satisfied with my dinner.

I made a reservation with my husband for our anniversary at this restaurant. I had always wanted to try Ukrainian cuisine, so I searched for a place where I could enjoy authentic flavors. Although Shkmeruli is a Georgian dish, we also ordered it as an additional course to our Ukrainian meal. The borscht and Shkmeruli were especially delicious.

The Russian, Ukrainian, and Georgian dishes were all incredibly delicious, and to be honest, I realized that I had underestimated Russian cuisine. The bill came out to just under 36,000 yen for three people, which was a bit pricey but we were very satisfied. We made a reservation for 3 people on Friday at 7:30 pm. The underground restaurant had dim lighting, creating a cozy atmosphere. - Marinated Ket's Blini Wrap (serves 3) - 3,154 yen (Russian-style fresh salmon marinated blini crepe wrap) - Assorted Vegetable Appetizers - 1,738 yen - Baked Piroshki (Russian-style bread filled with minced meat and egg) - 330 yen - Ukrainian Katleta - 1,880 yen - Shkmerli - 2,068 yen (Garlic cream stewed bone-in chicken thigh) - Crepe (Homemade Russian rye bread) - 330 yen - Shashlik - 2,178 yen (Soft lamb meat skewers marinated in aromatic vegetables and herbs) - Pechonnei Orem - 2,380 yen (Roasted Ezo deer meat with Napareuli sauce and chestnut puree) We also enjoyed some specialty vodka: - Moskovskaya Cristall (40%) - 748 yen - Beluga Vodka (Beluga Marinsk Distillery) - 1,380 yen We had a pre-dinner drink and some bottled beer from Estonia for around 800 and 1,300 yen respectively.

The first time I visited a traditional Russian restaurant, I had to navigate through the bustling streets of Shinjuku Kabukicho and descend into the underground passage along the Seibu Shinjuku Line to reach the charming stone interior of the restaurant. I ordered a course meal and opted for Georgian homemade red Sangria for my first drink, followed by white Sangria for my second. The appetizers were delicious, featuring a sour cream base with onions, tomatoes, pickles, and salmon wrapped in pate. The borscht, a beet soup with beef and potatoes, was flavorful, and I shared the main dishes of Khachapuri oven roast and stuffed cabbage rolls. The cabbage rolls were exceptionally tasty, and I plan to order them again on my next visit. For dessert, I chose tea with three types of jam, each offering a unique flavor. The Russian staff, particularly the female servers, were friendly and spoke Japanese fluently, enhancing the authenticity of the dining experience. I definitely look forward to revisiting this restaurant.

I had visited Shinjuku 3-chome several times before, but this was my first time visiting the main store here. The atmosphere of the restaurant is unique, with a staircase leading down to the underground area. Upon entering the restaurant, a beautiful Russian woman with white clothes greeted us in fluent Japanese and showed us to our seats. The drink menu at this place is very extensive, with not only plain vodka but also vodka with natural flavors. There are various cocktails to enjoy as well. For appetizers, they used sour cream with pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, onions wrapped in bread, and Russian-style piroshki, which were delicious. The main course can be selected from several options, and the cabbage rolls were exquisite. The cabbage rolls were soaked in a soup-like flavor, very tender, and the stew-like soup was also very tasty. I definitely want to order this again on my next visit. For a post-meal drink, I ordered tea, which came with four types of jam. I thought I was supposed to mix the jam with the drink, but the staff told me to try a little mixing and then enjoy the tea while eating the jam. The jam was not too sour or overly sweet, just really delicious.

The food is delicious, and it's easy to make a reservation for a large group, which is convenient. We ordered a course meal, but even though it's Russian cuisine, they mainly served dishes like borscht and piroshki that are familiar to Japanese people (and we could choose the main dish). It was nice not to have to worry too much about everyone's preferences. We reserved a private room for 9 people, but there was another table of the same size in the same room, so it felt more like a semi-private room. The only downside is that it's far from Shinjuku Station, even though it's called the "Shinjuku Higashi-guchi Main Store," it's actually located on the other side of Seibu Shinjuku Station, so we had to walk for more than 10 minutes.

This time, I made a reservation with a business partner and visited the restaurant together. The interior of the restaurant has a solid European-style decor, but the entrance is quite plain and hard to find, making it difficult to visit at first glance. The dishes served are mainly from former Soviet satellite countries, with authentic flavors that were very delicious. It brought back memories of my visit to Moscow about 10 years ago, and it was a fun dining experience. I sincerely hope that the conflict in Ukraine will end soon.

I remembered crossing Russia on the Trans-Siberian Railway 10 years ago! I was lucky to use the counter seat instead of a regular table. The Georgian course included borscht, lamb shashlik, Russian pancakes, and more. The Russian-style tea at the end came in a container with several types of jam. The Russian appetizer platter featured salted herring, salmon with beets, and caviar - very luxurious. The fish and soup were delicious and paired well with red wine. I look forward to trying the a la carte menu next time!

Regardless of the situation, Russian cuisine is delicious. The background music flowing in the restaurant is also wonderful. - Smetana sour cream (solidified milk) → a classic Russian dish - Pelmeni, Russian dumplings → chewy and surpassing the original Chinese dumplings - Beets and potatoes: Beets are a common ingredient in Russian cuisine - Russian preserved food - cucumber pickles → another common dish - Dill called Ukrop → has a unique taste and is delicious - The World's Japanese Wives - Mayonnaise consumption - Russia ranks first in the world for mayonnaise consumption - Milk, eggs, wheat → eating crepes is common in Russia A lovely atmosphere in the restaurant where you can feel the history. (Historical trivia) Rasputin - period of turmoil. A subordinate who manipulated the emperor during the change of emperor - the collapse of the imperial system - 1900s - 1906. Celebrations are held on May 9th to commemorate the victory in the Great Patriotic War and the defeat of Nazism. While immersing in a bit of history, the meal itself is delicate with a wonderful flavor.

Descending a steep staircase, you arrive in the basement. The atmosphere is dimly lit and more stylish than imagined, perfect for a date. The "Borscht" is light yet rich in flavor. The tomato in the borscht is not overpowering, allowing the beet flavor to come through. It is delicious even without sour cream, but adding it creates a smooth and different taste. The "Beef Tongue Stewed in Red Wine Sauce" is incredibly tender. It cuts easily and can be swallowed with minimal chewing. The sauce is not too sweet or greasy, with a gentle and refreshing taste. The beef tongue has a subtle flavor, allowing the sauce to shine. The sauce contains bacon, onions, carrots, and is served with horseradish and sour cream. There is a wide variety of drinks to choose from, making it a bit challenging. I ordered the Rasputin, which was a bit too sweet for me. My companion had a ginger beer, which I tasted and found to be pleasantly spicy. The entrance has a blackboard listing the dishes and prices, allowing you to check before entering the restaurant.

"Sungari Shinjuku Higashiguchi Main Store, a hangover meal. I heard that a new tower in Shinjuku Kabukicho has been built, so I decided to check it out, but it was incredibly crowded. I thought it would be tough to drink here, so I searched for another place nearby. I remembered a Russian restaurant that I wanted to visit before, so I decided to visit directly. It has been around since 1957, so it's a long-standing establishment. It was a bit different from what I had imagined, but it had a very traditional feel. When I opened the wooden door, there was a narrow and slightly steep staircase. It felt like I had entered some kind of attraction at Disneyland. When I opened the door downstairs, it felt like a moody restaurant inside a cave. I inquired and found out that without a reservation, they could offer a seat until 7 pm. It seemed very popular! Featured Menu: - Sungari Course: 5478 yen - St. Petersburg Course: 8668 yen For first-time visitors, the Sungari Course is recommended. It seemed quite affordable at 5478 yen. I decided to upgrade the Sungari Course's appetizer to caviar for an additional 1000 yen. Sungari Course: - Jubilee Innis Lithuania Beer: A light and refreshing beer with a slight bitterness. - Amuse + Celery Root and Caviar, Salmon Roe Tartlet: A tartlet with a mousse-like topping, ikura, and caviar. The caviar added a subtle salty flavor. - Marinovnaya Keta: Red salmon marinated Russian-style, wrapped in blini pancakes. Served with pickles and onions. - Griviy v Smitanye: Mushroom pot roast with cream. Served with a crusty bread cover. - Borscht: A classic beet stew. - Beef Stroganoff: Slices of beef in a rich sauce, served with saffron rice. - Tea: Russian tea served with a selection of jams. Overall, the meal was very satisfying and worth the price. The dishes included familiar Russian cuisine and were elegantly presented. It was a delightful dining experience!"

I attended a workplace drinking party. It's been a while since I last visited. The restaurant serves sophisticated Russian cuisine. We had a set menu, and all the dishes had great flavors. The dishes from cold regions tend to be rich in flavor, but these were just right. Each of the four dishes was quite generous in portion size. The last dish, cabbage rolls, was delicious, but I had to give up halfway as I was already full. My favorite beef stroganoff wasn't included in the set menu, so I plan to visit again to enjoy it. I highly recommend this restaurant.
