Today's lunch was at Tenzen in Edogawabashi. This place is known as one of Tokyo's top five tendon restaurants. The restaurant is located in the basement of a building along Mejiro Street. I arrived just before 12 pm. There were two groups of customers at the L-shaped counter seats and two individuals at the table seats. The place started to get moderately busy around noon. The chef was working in the kitchen, while the hostess was serving customers. The hostess provided polite and efficient service. The restaurant was filled with the pleasant aroma of sesame oil, which made me even hungrier. The menu included tempura set meals: Hana for 1,500 yen, Tsuki for 3,000 yen, and tendon bowls: Kakiage Don for 1,100 yen, Ebi Yasai Tendon for 1,200 yen, and Tokusei Tendon for 1,800 yen (all prices include tax). I decided to try the Tokusei Tendon for 1,800 yen (tax included). Since the two groups at the counter had ordered set meals, the chef was frying in order, which took some time. The set meals looked delicious when served. First, after about 5 minutes, I was served with a salad and pickles. The salad consisted of sunny lettuce, thinly sliced carrots, and onion slices, all nicely chilled. The pickles included two types of pickled vegetables. I waited for 23 minutes for my tendon bowl. Since there was only one chef preparing the dishes, it took some time. By the time my tendon bowl arrived, it was almost full inside the restaurant. The Tokusei Tendon came with two shrimp, shrimp and minced mushroom, two shishito peppers, shrimp tempura, conger eel, and gizzard shad. The ingredients were coated in a thick sauce and topped with yuzu peel. The miso soup served was made with clams and had a rich flavor. The tendon bowl was delicious. The shrimp were plump and the whole dish was flavorful. The conger eel had a tender texture, and the gizzard shad was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I prefer tempura to be crispy, but this one was a bit soggy. The overall dish had a thick coating and a strong sauce, which some may find too sweet. The sauce, which the restaurant prides itself on, is said to have been passed down for many years, but it was a bit too sweet for my taste. While the restaurant offers a generous amount of ingredients at a reasonable price, it wasn't my favorite tendon bowl.
